So I'm starting college in a two weeks and I'm wonder whether my university allows Steam.
I'm going to live in a shared flat so I'll be able to use it there anyway, so no big deal, but the University has a 40 Gb/s connection so it would be cool to be able to download games there.

Anyway, quick poll, does your university allow Steam?

EDIT: Just realized the cake. 100% a coincidence lmao.

Thanks.

You've got "DrHouse" for a name and his picture for an avatar.

And then you say "Oh my God" even though House is an atheist that mocks religion every chance he gets.

What a fail.

I understand it's a manner of speech and one that's hard to get rid of once you get used to it. I tend to avoid using it out of principle though and I think every atheist should.

It's very hard to heheh, just everybody uses the expression. Also, what's your substitute to it?

I think "wow" is a pretty good substitute. It expresses the same thing and it's also only 3 letters so it's quick to type.

I also sometimes use "Holy shit".

Christians should actually avoid using "OMG" more so then us atheists because it's against one of their god's ten commandments; "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain". Saying "OMG" is therefore blasphemy which is something you go to hell for according to their beliefs.

But Holy Shit does the same thing... expresses something that has to do with religion. :/

The phrase "Holy shit" kinda mocks the religion though.

The only expression about god I really avoid using is "Thank god", because I feel I have no reason whatsoever to thank a non-existent things.
The rest I don't really care about that much.

You can always use VPN, so ...
I would even add that it is recommended in public places, such as university, to use such a service.

The point of using the University connection would be to download games with the 40Gb/s connection. VPNs are usually a lot slower.
So no point then, I can just download games at home. I haven't rented anything yet but pretty sure I'll have a 50 Mb/s connection, VPN would have to be at least 200 MB/s for me to even think about taking my laptop to class.

That is right.
But I still think that the security of your data is more important than speed. At least I think so.

Steam credentials are handled over TLS and game data is not sensitive, so I don't see the problem of using it over unsecure connections.
Also I trust my university more than a random VPN.

That's right.
But i guess that be login in some way in the network?
So, if you do not use VPN, University will know that during lectures you download games.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't be. Especially if it's your own personal computer. There's no illegal activity involved with Steam, and there are plenty of programs that can use a lot of bandwidth

Last year I was in an internship in a University-owned company and they had Steam completely blocked.
Still it was self-managed and from what i could gather the block was made in their intern firewall, not the University's, but I can't be sure they hadn't it blocked too.

Huh. That is weird to me. I can't imagine why that would be, unless maybe that place had security concerns

Should work.
Steam is a safe retailer. although, the amount of "naughty" games is increasing...

I highly doubt any uni anywhere would allow Steam client on their study machines. On the other hand, if they have wifi or Ethernet wall sockets, it is unlikely they would filter out Steam…

My university would flag your account if you started doing big downloads (in particular if they were using something similar to torrents, actually any form of "torrent" type download would get you banned from using their connection).
That is for the main campus internet, in the dorms they did not have such restrictions.

You need an 'Other' option. Because for some inexplicable reason since this semester started for me, I can login and download and play games, but...STEAM COMMUNITY REFUSES TO WORK >.>

(and by "refuses to work", i mean it won't let me stay logged in...)

you can't log into steam at my colleage, but you can download and play games just fine if you logged in elsewhere first and then went to the colleage wifi

Continuing that comment, I once brought my laptop there with Steam logged-in and I couldn't download either.

The fact you can't log in at my school may be a redirect issue of it timing out before getting out of the school, which is an issue for residents trying to play xbox for example, rather than the school specifically blocking the site and links.

You can't access it on my university connection but if you use the school VPN (and I imagine other VPNs) you can get on and use it like normal.

My first university did in fact block everything, which wasn't a browser and they had some strange filters in place. However in my second university, where I did my master degree, they didn't care at all, and I was even playing games from time to time during lectures.

In the school PC's no because Steam is associated with games. As for whether you can connect from your own computer don't know because I never tried :D

if I recall, on EDUROAM it works fine
It's a network/internet common to several universities. Torrents work well too. (They can be used for legal stuff, don't judge)

In UNI no ones' gonna care about what you do or don't, you're your boss for a while now, it's all up to you.

On accommodations and similar might vary I guess.

As I have sayd, the place where I did my internship last year was owned by the University and therefore used the EDUROAM network, but still Steam didn't work at all because their internal firewall blocked it.

So the university could, in theory, block it too.
Whether the do or not I'll know in two weeks.

I think colleges rarely block steam or really any site at all(at least mine doesn't). Workplaces in the other hand tend to block access to anything that can be considered a "distraction", hence why I'm using my phone instead of one of the PCs.

Half of the people in my courses (min!) are regulary playing Hearthstone, CSGO, Dota and are using Steam while the prof is holding a speech, so you should be fine. But don't expect the connection to be that great.

"don't expect the connection to be that great."
Well I'd say that 40Gb/s symetric with 6ms of ping is kinda great.

My University does not block Steam, but unless your U has a direct inter-connect to the Steam network you would be unlikely to see speeds any faster than good broadband connections. I just checked and the peak download speed was 20MB/sec

Why it won't be allowed? seems ridiculous. Only bad thing is that internet sucks, so download games if you like it will take ages, so you have to have the games already downloaded from home.

At mine only basic ports are enabled so you can use it only via browser, the client uses different ones so it doesn't work. You can use it offline though =P
Being a big university the had to do it or the net would have been saturated and unusable.

Also, think there's a typo in a poll's option.. should be "I can log in but I can't play or download"
