I just checked out this giveaway http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/O8mjL/dayz

and what do i see ? a contributing member of the site got suspended for posting "Seems legit!"

sorry that bullshit is a little bit too harsh. I understand if people obviously try to call out giveaways like "This is obviously fake dont join this shit, he is just a russian kid with no money and just wants the game" etc. but come on a sarcastic little comment like that with several facts that back up that the giveaway could be fake wont harm anyone.

Let people give hints or warnings about their suspicion of the legitimacy of the giveaway and let everybody decide for THEMSELVES if they want to join or not.

There is no harm done by people giving warnings, more often some people dont even join because of that and the trusting people have a better chance at winning the game.

Im not a supporter of calling out people, but that was not a banable offense in my opinion and the mods went too far.

Thats obviously a meme from internet, cause everybody knows all known memes from everytime, in every language, in every universe, and all that non-stupid arguments from Arendelle, the magic land of omniscent and omnipotent people of justice, you know. And im NOT being ironic/sarcastic.

Seriously? To try to make an argument that "seems legit" wasn't the user saying "I don't think this is legit" is a bit pointless. We ALL know what "seems legit" on the internet means. To try to say otherwise is expecting everyone here to be stupid.

How can you say you're not a supporter of calling out people but say it's okay to call out people on making fake giveaways when you don't even know for sure that it IS a fake GA? Calling out when the user is proven guilty is not allowed; so what makes you think calling out when the user is NOT proven guilty is allowed? It's not. It's not acceptable at all. Like Luller said, there are really people who just sign up because they have an amazing game to giveaway. We shouldn't drive them off just because we're scared of gambling 60 FREE points.

Harm IS done. You're hurting someone's feelings and potentially making them leave. Who the hell wants to be shit on for doing something nice? Everyone realizes that there are lots of fake GAs. Everyone realizes that a lot of new users are the ones to makes those. But just because we have a stereotype doesn't mean we should apply it in every situation because there ARE people who break the stereotype.

Also, who cares that it was a "contributing member"? If you break the rules, you're warned with a suspension. That applies to everyone, 0 contributions or 5000.

I doubt there are people who are deeply offended and hurt by someone saying that their first giveaway might not be genuine.

Everyone should understand that it's a bit suspicious if a brand-new member no one has ever heard of with 12 games on Steam gives away 3 copies of Thief. Even if it is legit, the GA creator should be expecting some doubt.

If not, they probably would burst in tears because only 4999 of the 5000 entrants said thanks, so let's make thanking compulsory! We might hurt some people's feelings after all!

"Even if it is legit, the GA creator should be expecting some doubt."

We're talking about NEW members here. New members have no idea about our preconceived notions of them. They don't know that the site gets fake GAs by tons of new members. They wouldn't understand why they're getting picked on. You doubt there are people who'd be hurt by it? Please read Luller's post above: "My first giveaway was Skyrim Legendary Edition. It would not have inspired me to do 234 more if people would have been calling me out. Please stop <3". As for me, if my first GA had been something big like that and I got called out by a bunch of people, I would have come out of the experience feeling attacked. I wouldn't want to hang around a community that attacks people for doing something extremely nice. You have to also consider that if we allow comments like "seems legit" (which on the nastiness scale is pretty low) then we'll get more of the toxic comments because calling out is now seen as allowed.

I don't even know why people are arguing for this. Between saying something rather mean and not saying it, isn't the obvious choice to NOT say it? To say it just to be that guy who wants to "save people's points" is not worth it.

Oh, I wasn't arguing for calling out. I merely think it should be allowed to express some degree of doubt. Obviously, no one wants to give games to a community who is bashing you with hurtful comments, and personally, I consider 'seems legit' to be somewhat aggressive because of the sarcastic undertone. However, stating facts like here should be allowed in my opinion.

If sharing that link is considered calling out, sorry.

Hit the "Report Giveaway" button and move along. The GA is open for 3 weeks, and if the mods do indeed find it to be illegitimate, your points will be returned to you.

I hosted a GA two days after registering. I believe I had ~four games on Steam. I had zero "fake" comments on my first GA. Truthfully, if I had, I would have viewed the community (not necessarily as a whole) rude and unappreciative. Why the hell would I want to stick around for that?

Are you adressing me with 'you'? I don't enter giveaways I think are fake.

Also, you probably missed my point: I don't want people to post 'omg dis is fake gtfo' all over the place. I just think that expressing doubt should be allowed.

And your first giveaway had a description in good english, which is a very strong sign that it was genuine, not to mention that it wasn't a high-priced game.

three out of hundreds? Hardly a significant amount...

Still, once again: I spoke about comments like "You just joined, and are already giving away three copies of an AAA title? looks a bit suspicious, sorry." not "Lol fake nub.". I don't know which cases you're talking about, but I guess that they probably had to put up with aggressive comments, in which case I totally understand why they might feel unwelcome.

I love when people state their opinion as fact: WE ALL KNOW. In fact, some people dont even know what is a meme. This is not the case, for sure, but the only thing WE ALL KNOW is that we dont know what he was thinking when he wrote that. A world with such policemans and judges may be funny.

Everybody with half a brain knows the "calling out" rules, and the consequences of breaking them. The forum search tool will reveal a wealth of threads discussing to death (and several afterlives thereafter) the reasons for the rule and the arguments for and against.

"Seems legit" is as much a callout as anything else. The poster clearly couldn't help themselves and tried to call out the gifter while wording it in a way they thought they might get away with. If the worst happened, and the banhammer struck, I expect they thought they might be able to call upon the services of an army of simpletons to enthusiastically fight their corner too.

I don't see the issue here. "Joke" calling out is the same as "joke" begging. Allowing "joke" instances of an infraction simply makes it impossible for Support to operate, and opens the floodgates to a legion of whiny ballbags contesting their suspensions on the grounds that they were just "joking around". The rules are crystal clear on this issue to anyone with a rudimentary level of intelligence, and it doesn't take a lot of brain power or self-control to avoid breaking them...

EVERYONE CALM THE DUCK DOWN! There is a shitton of arguments to use why the ban was good or bad. But without the commenter being able to tell us what his purpose was this thread kinda becomes pointless.

So instead of this, lets talk about KITTENS instead!

Boo-frggin-hoo. He deserved to be disciplined for attempting to skirt the rules. I'd have more sympathy for someone who erred through ignorance.

I seriously doubt that member is commenting "seems legit" on the any giveaway(s) other than the one(s) he suspects to be fake. He also replied to the first comment to ensure extra visibility. Why is it so damn difficult for some members to just skip a giveaway and move on if they doubt its validity?

Just out of curiosity, since I am a german user and not that fluent with english.
When I think that something seems legit and want to say that. How am I allowed to say that something seems legit, without being banned or stuff? O.O

I have the same problem. I'm a native Spanish speaker. Despite being able to use English fluently, some idioms and expressions can fly right over my head.

I've been here for around a year, and while I frequently read the forums, several times a day, I tend to just creep around and not participate actively, out of fear of what I've seen. SG community can be a little harsh on non-native English speakers, and I'd rather just use the site to give games and win games, than participate in the forums and risk my banning/suspension because of a misunderstanding.

Well that's the thing. You shouldn't be commenting on whether or not a giveaway looks legitimate.
You can just say "thank you", "danke schรถn", "vielen dank", comment on how awesome they are..

Virtually anything aside from commenting on whether it's fake/real.
Also, your english is pretty good. I think you'll be fine ;)

That is how we say it. Particularly online, it you went to the trouble to figuring out the legitimacy of something and wanted to leave a comment saying that you believe this thing is legitimate, an English speaker would say "seems legit". I think the reason this is being taken as sarcastic is just that there must be no reason what-so-ever to assume that it was legit, and the comment did not imply any special knowledge about the person/gift. If you wanted to imply you are being sarcastic you might exaggerate it or include a smiley of some kind.

It would be interesting if they implement a statistic below the post count on how many is from the forum and another on how many there is on giveaways. It would be even more interesting if the site kept track in how similar all the posts are. I swear, I think people use copy and paste on this site more than pastebin.

It really depends upon how you use the phrase. For example, if you were to have said, "Everything I can see about this giveaway appears solid, so it seems legit to me," it would have been clear that you were being literal and positive.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Except, "Seems legit" as presented, can only ever mean, "I think this is fake/bullshit". There is no positive connotation when someone posts just, "Seems legit".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"can ONLY mean"? "there is NO positive connotation"?
It is highly unlikely it was meant positive, but it could be. You should learn to read without judging based on what you think is meant. You cant honestly say with certainty what the person thought when writing "seems legit". If you think you can you are too full of yourself.

Permalink

You are able to use the phrase "seems legit" to refer to something questionable but are saying at the end of it ok I believe it, but in most cases it means the exact opposite of what it says, so I think they were fine in their decision and its only a suspension not a ban.

I used to do this same thing, then I get suspended, I think it's stupid because I only did this on giveaways where it was pretty obvious that the giveaway in question was a fake (just like this one actually) and my only intention was to help other people so they don't fell in it (and actually I get a lot of gratitude from users for pointing that those giveaways were fakes) but since it seems mr.bobowhatever doesn't want us to be nice to each other and try to help, now I don't do it anymore, I guess "fuck it" would sum the whole thing pretty well, you wanna directly help other users?? Too bad, some people say "just follow the rules" as if never questioning a dumb rule makes everything perfect, it doesn't, rules improve through questioning.

Except you know, the whole rule about NOT CALLING USERS OUT. Doesnt matter that you think the giveaway is clearly fake, or even if they post in the description that its fake. You report the giveaway and move the hell on. OR, lets think about this, lets say that EVERY single giveaway you ever thought was fake was indeed fake. Now, maybe 30 people see your comments and think, "Hey he is allowed to call out this guy, Ill call out giveaways too!". Now they do it, and it continues on. How long before 1.) A legit giveaway is called out on, and 2.) People get tired of being called liars or retards because they decided it might be fun to giveaway this season's new release as their first giveaway? 3.) For the entire site to go to hell and become even worse then it current is because of certain people's mindsets/entitlements.

Also, for fuck sake man, they are free imaginary Internet points. You get about 900 a bloody day. Is it really that big of a tragedy if you spend 50 points on a fake giveaway? Report and move on.
