I just checked out this giveaway http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/O8mjL/dayz

and what do i see ? a contributing member of the site got suspended for posting "Seems legit!"

sorry that bullshit is a little bit too harsh. I understand if people obviously try to call out giveaways like "This is obviously fake dont join this shit, he is just a russian kid with no money and just wants the game" etc. but come on a sarcastic little comment like that with several facts that back up that the giveaway could be fake wont harm anyone.

Let people give hints or warnings about their suspicion of the legitimacy of the giveaway and let everybody decide for THEMSELVES if they want to join or not.

There is no harm done by people giving warnings, more often some people dont even join because of that and the trusting people have a better chance at winning the game.

Im not a supporter of calling out people, but that was not a banable offense in my opinion and the mods went too far.

If you want to make comments about fake giveaways, make a Fake Giveaway Notification steam group and post your announcements for the world there. Calling out will never be allowed on SG.

I may have forgotten how to speak English, but it seems like this whole thread is calling someone out.

I never really understood why people bother with the "reported"/"this guy has been reported" comments between it not accomplishing anything generally, and it kind of being against site rules. The only time I told someone I was going to report them, was in some email correspondence that I stupidly initiated with a craigslist troll. Pretty sure clicking the report button in the email removed his only way of trolling me without giving me his actual email. Of course he could have spent 30 seconds creating a throw-away email, but that requires thinking....

To be honest that is a really bad example. Sure maybe the mods have cracked down a little hard on calling out recently but I think it was pretty obvious what that commentors intentions were.

They are cracking down exactly because of this bullshit. People skirting the lines so they can claim, "But I didnt say it was fake! All I said was, he doesnt have it in inventory/is new/ first giveaway." We all know what these people mean, and the more and more they are allowed to skirt the line, the more they cross it or convince others to cross it for them.

JUST fyi, if you think that's stupid, i once got a suspension from this site by a mod, simply for doing what you did (saying i thought the rule was silly) - except i didn't make a new thread about it, i didn't type more than one sentence about it, and i called it 'silly' not 'bullshit'...

so if you get permanently banned for this thread, don't be too surprised :) You simply have to say a rule is silly (not even break it yourself OR incite OTHERS to break it) to get into trouble here.

Meanwhile people who make fake giveaways just to draw attention to their facebook pages and groups and such, get off completely free :P

I've been suspended for much less. I advice just to not say anything that could even partially be considered. Just report and move on.

Part of me thinks it might be best for them to just to disable comments on giveaways all together. Though I did ask a question on one of my giveaways to try and get responses besides just "thanks" :P ( think it was anime related.. been a little bit and I am tired right now lol. )

"I've been suspended for much less." Great way to lead to censorship isn't it? I'll probably be banned for this now.

Eh, honestly its their choice what to do.. Not saying its right or wrong at this moment. I would imagine that if things get out of hand things would be dealt with in one way or another.

Not like we control the site or police it :P ( Nor would I want to really, at least not currently :P I've been an admin for game severs, and a few forums.. heck used to own a few server for a few different games. It can be a major headache to deal with. )

Oh my god, I'm tired of this free speech/censorship bullshit. It's a rule. One rule. One thing you're not allowed to do. The USA has "free speech", yet you can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater, or send death threats to the president, or slander someone publically. For the most part you can say whatever you want, but if you want to break the rules, you'll face the (very minor) consequence. A two-day suspension is pretty damn minimal.

That's why i never comment. Comments section supposed to be for comments. If it's allowed only for saying "thanks" then it should be removed and instead they should make a thanks or like button.

The report button should be removed anyway. I have never seen any effect before the giveaway ended; before there was one lucky "winner"..

So if we cant question the legitimacy of the giveaway, maybe we are atleast allowed to write poetry ?

It should be totally fine to ask the comment section if they know a word that rhymes with "sake" for my japanese haiku, right ?

Why do you have the urge to say something? Is it that hard to ignore it?
People can judge a giveaway themself and the ones that enter blindly won't read comments anyway.

yeah they can judge themselves, so why is it a problem to have an indicator of someones suspicion ? you can JUDGE for YOURSELF and INGORE it ...

i personally dont want to check out every fucking giveaway i enter but if i see someone indicating that it could be fake, ill check it out and judge the giveaway MYSELF. Thus saving me time and the frustration entering a dead giveaway.

A lot of people dont understand that its annoying infuriating and frustrating to WIN a dead giveaway after having lost the draw on thousands of real giveaways, it is NOT about the free points you are spending (but some mods are kinda narrow minded and dont get that)

The arguments about "judging yourself" actually support the freedom of warning other people in the comment section.

It is a problem because you could be wrong (and even when you have proof, create a ticket like support already said hundreds of times). You are the narrow minded one for not understanding that.

Or you never check any giveaway and have a chance to win a fake one, or you check them all and 'lower' your chance to win a fake one. I once won a giveaway from a guy who already done several before and never received it, shit happens. Deal with it :p

a "warning" that it COULD be fake, yeah of course you could be wrong. Thats the whole fucking point, so you decide for yourself, i understand that very well but thats the risk you CHOOSE not to take. Think before posting.

For Example this giveaway: http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/k1yW3/payday-2

I choose not to join the giveaway, because i have certain suspicions about it ( apparently i cant tell my opinions about it because i will be banned for it). The risk that i take is, that it is a legitimate giveaway and i miss the chance on winning the game. It was my choice and i could be wrong, ill deal with it.

If your warning is wrong it's disrespectful towards the giveaway creator. Seriously, is it that hard to understand? If you have proof: contact support and it'll get deleted. If you dont: take your chance or ignore it and wait till it ends. But oh no you prefer to get around a rule of the site by rephrasing it a bit but still keeping it obvious enough. :x

And you say the mods are narrow minded ones... dear lord.

if the people have their warnings let them have it or dont give them any reason for suspicion and atleast explain yourself in the giveaways comment section. If its legitimate THEY are the ones missing out and if youre complaining that people on the internet are mean to you .... grow the fuck up we dont live in a cartoon with ponys or some shit.

There were many suggestions to help with these kinds of situations but the mods always turned em down, because you know .... banning people that actualy gave something away and protecting those that dont is apparently what they stand for.

Nope, can't get more narrow minded than that. You just don't get it.. Thanks for admitting you are one of the dicks on the internet though, you should feel proud.

Hey guys have a 'protector' here, he'll save the day.

There are so many comments here that no one is going to bother reading this one or care about my opinion, but I like it when people call out because it helps ME recognize faulty giveaways. Not EVERY giveaway is suspicious looking on the giveaway page, and you can't expect EVERYONE to do research on every giveaway they enter. When one person "checks out" the giveaway/host in question, and finds that it might be fake or something, he should be able to warn people. I don't think anyone should be a dick about it but the right to at least give a warning should be allowed.

I honestly don't give a fuck and enter giveaways for whatever game I want. I don't even check if it's fake. THe majority of the giveaways on the front page are garbage so it's easy to sift through the shit and save your points.

After having read the arguments on this thread, I don't see something that hasn't been discussed before. This has been a rule ever since I can remember and most of the users mentioned are aware of the rule, but try to "bypass" it with questionable phrases.

Still, there is more calling out in this particular thread than in that giveaway so I will be closing the thread. The rules on calling out are not going to change any time soon. Users who feel they were suspended unfairly can create a ticket to have the decision reviewed.
