I was trying through the client, not the website. Somebody told me to scroll down on the page that shows the differences between the regular and deluxe editions, and click the "get it free" button at the bottom of the chart, instead of the one at the top. That worked for me.

I had same issue trying to get the game via the client, but from the browser I got it in one second..

I added the game to my wishlist, and when I went there, it got added to my library automatically.

They've given me Sims 2, 3, and now 4. Oddly the only one I ever played growing up was the original. Wonder if anyone else still plays it.
EDIT: My bad, I think I may have redeemed a Sims 3 key from the now-ancient Humble Origin bundle. False alarm, nothing to see here, as you were, etc.

I have the original on gamecube and I still play it from time to time. It's super outdated but that just makes it funnier. Especially the character creation.

I actually just picked up the Gamecube version to throw into a Wii. Since it's the only one in the series I ever played really, it doesn't necessarily feel outdated to me, just like Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 or Diablo 1. Guess I just never liked sequels back then.

using incognito mode in the browser and adding it to order and signing in again was able to get me past the unable to purchase, only gift, bug.

You can also add it to your wishlist, and then add it to your library from your wishlist.
