My 2 proverbial cents: saying thank you after you won a game to the giveaway creator is painless, is costless, it doesn't take much time, it's the proper thing to do and one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to say thank you. It's good education and proper manners 101.

+1
I use to say thank you when entering GAs, but becomes messy under the current notifications system.
So now I say a Thank You blurb after I've won.

True. It was just one of those things that jumped out at me today. I thought, "Why are all these people thanking me for winning? That rarely happens."

Unless you live a profoundly boring life, most days you'll run into at least one or two things that rarely happen, whether or not you realize that's the case. :P

You can just think of it as mild group sociology. That level requires commitment towards the site, so by then the individuals are much more likely to be shaped by the community and adopt is accepted behaviour. This is also one of the reasons you'll see frequent forum-posters and high-level people say most changes suggested by relatively new/low-level people are bad ideas, yet cheer if by some miracle cg himself announces same idea as a new feature.

People who say thank you to me after they win a giveaway get a serious rep boost from me. Manners cost nothing. Thats why whenever I win a giveaway, if I can get the opportunity to talk to the guy, I will sincerely thank them for the giveaway. Hell, I even do it before the giveaway has been drawn :P
Thank yous and such make life worth living that little extra bit more. Just a shame that some people who win my giveaways don't say thank you :/

I'm level 6 and I left a thank you in your giveaway when I won. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't say that no one at level 6 and below said thank you, just that I had a lot of recently concluded level 7 giveaways, and all of a sudden I got a burst of post win thank yous, which had never happened before.

I fall squarely on the side of feeling that thanks for an entry is spam, because I get tired of the multiple notifications and they often seem like bots, but thanks from the winner is welcomed and appreciated.
The exception is whitelist/private giveaways. I always thank giveaway creators for whitelisting me or sending me the link to a private GA.

Or maybe you just experience something when you suddenly interact with less than 0.1% of a given group.
What talgaby said above ^
You can't make such assumption based on a few, or even dozen or hundred of giveaways, because that's still a small amount of users you interacted with.
For instance, I always say thank you if I win, in my unique GIF form, and I join variety of levels, including L0. IIRC I was able to win one of your giveaways, so you know how it looks like.

Yes, but you're THE Archi, and therefore always awesome, so you don't count. :-D

I have always felt that saying thank you when I win was the right thing to do and have done so on every GA except large dev. GA's, as they most likely don't want a tonne of spam since I have joined.

I don't think it has something to do with the level of the users but with the fact that they are simply different people, raised differently, with different values and morals, sadly.
I always thanked the giveaway creator, whether it was my first, second or my latest win.

I say thank you every time I win.. must be trans-level7, a level 7 born in level 3's body. ;_;
Noticed more thankyous from forum GAs by the way. I think it just matters how much a person is invested (mostly emotionally, but also financially) in SG. Forum regulars are more likely to say it than some random person who never looks past the GA list page.

That's a key point. My giveaways are mostly public, so I should have been more explicit in stating that as the context.
Comment has been collapsed.
There's no rule or social convention regarding that. I usually only engage in conversation when someone asks about or says something unique about a game. A generic thank you doesn't get a response, but a "OMG, I love the movie that's based on this game! Have you seen it, it's awesome!", will get a response. :-)

Far less common indeed but I've noticed an increased number of replies to my thanks lately.

I have only won 3 so far and am a mere lvl2. Two GA's were public, One group (U7) and for all goes that I thanked in the thread after winning the moment I got the notice that I won.
Why? Out of gratitude and respect for the gifter, as a thank you and to let them know I am aware of the win and with that will likely mark received and activate on very short term. Why? Because it's appropriate and or polite and quick receival is nice, for the winner as wel as the gifter imo.

TBH I don't care if people say thanks on my giveaways, before or after.
It used to be a big deal to me, but I've been over it for months. It's nice, sure, but whatever docks their yacht.
I care that they get a game they wanted, I care that they don't sell/trade it, and I care that they mark it so it doesn't add any hassle for me.
I'm easy like that. :X

Yeah, I don't need the thanks either. I keep this quote handy:
"The real gratitude shows when the giveaway winner is taking his/her time to press the damn "received" button."

Yeah, but a lot of people take their sweet time and drag it out to the full 7 days, even though they're online all the time. It's annoying and aggravating. They're so busy mass entering other giveaways, that they can't be bothered to activate and mark received what they've already won in a timely manner. I know you're given 7 days by the rules, but waiting a week for someone to do that feels disrespectful.
Plus, it has you wondering sometimes if something is wrong. Is the key invalid? Were they able to redeem my gift? You don't know what is going on. That is what the quote is really saying, to activate and mark as received QUICKLY. Most are happy when someone does that.

I give a thank every time I win a game. I only say "thank you" in general entries whenever I remember to do so because, well, it seems insignificant to say "Thanks for the chance!" considering how much people complain about it in the first place. Seems like most people(specifically public giveaways) don't even want a thank you whenever someone wins. On the reverse side, I feel like I annoy the hell out of people when I'm too enthusiastic in giving my gifts to them. Every. Single. Time.

Having a high-level does not automatically mean that a person has endless wealth. I use higher levels mainly as a filter against rule breaking and wanting to give games to people who contribute. Not that lots of higher level people haven't broken rules, but it's less prevalent. I also prefer to give publicly rather than having to spend the time creating private giveaways, which is much more work. If SG would work on incorporating the SGtools rule checking into the site so that we could do checks for public giveaways, then I could lower the levels. As it stands, I have to either spend more time creating private and forum giveaways with SGtools, or use higher levels in public GAs.

I checked some of your giveaway winners, most have hundreds of wins. I don't think that high levels have endless wealth, but someone who won hundreds of games surely isn't lacking for games and likely is entering for games they're not really interested in playing.

So even though I'm with you on "people should only enter what they really want". What you're saying here means that people who have won like -what? 100, 150, 200? - games don't deserve to win any more games? or to put it even stricter even should not be able to enter any more giveaways?
I know where you're coming from, but I believe that's something the giver has to decide and shouldn't be criticized for.

Well, I'm just wondering. I want to know if givers to high levels understand that they're not doing anything charitable, just participating in a random trading game, or if they're deluding themselves that people actually "deserve to win". My guess is that most people fall into the latter camp.

Yeah, I'm not looking for thank yous, I don't care, I was just surprised to get a batch of them all of a sudden.

I do care for a TY after one has won, otherwise I get him in my BL. I find it misrespectful to get something from someone and totally ignore him.
It happened to me mostly on public/invite GAs from leechers and rule-breakers but happened also a couple of very high levels so it means that this thing affects the community at every level...

I don't even keep track, personally, if someone thanks me for winning a game, though a few do from time to time. It is nice to see sometimes, implying a little knowledge that they'll enjoy the game. Hitting the received button kinda says thanks as it is, but as many have said, it costs nothing but a few seconds go to into the giveaway again and say thanks directly. Of course, sometimes will "spot check" later to see if they indeed activated it.
Admittedly, I didn't bother at all at first, maybe half my page 1 never got a comment. But more recently over the last few months I like going in and replying to every single win. A Simple "Activated & Marked as received" comment with a thank you. Usually add a little commentary too. Will do this regardless of the level of giveaway, or whether public, invite or group.
It's just a nice way to make the gifter feel appreciated, and in some cases, maybe even encourage them to continue gifting, because they're doing something nice, and might even get something in return. which is an added bonus, even if that's just a happy feeling.
Sometimes wonder if people even realise they can go back into the giveaway page to be able to comment after winning... Not hard to notice, but there are all kinds of people out there.

I sometimes feel that in the other hand the giveaway creator should consider thank the entrants/the winner too because without the damn 'Received button' pressed by the winner, you'll get nothing (I had thanked several of my winner about that instead of them lol :P) because of the fact that most of us if not all - are doing gib just for the sake of CV... unless the gib are PURE gib if you know what I mean...

I used to say Thank You when I first found my self here but realised some didn't like it so stopped saying it when entering a giveaway but I've said Thank You after each game I've won. It takes less time to say thanks than it does to add the game to ya library and is the decent thing to do, sadly not everyone is brought to have good manners.

Making public giveaways at level 6 and below, I get the usual thank yous when someone enters a giveaway, but few after they win.
Making public giveaways at level 7 and above, I get similar entry thank yous, but for the first time, I got consistent thank yous from people after they won.
Maybe I gave away better level 7 games, so people were more appreciative, or maybe the quality of entrants jumps exponentionally at level 7 and above.
Hum...
