Witcher 1 had such horrible combat that I couldn't enjoy it. Witcher 2 is an entirely different story. I love everything about it and cant wait to play 3.

Angry Birds Epic by far.

Okay, seriously. I like Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 (I still call it an RPG, don't hate) the best of all RPGs.

H&S games like Diablo are NOT RPGs. And MMORPGs are in a whole different league. My favorite RPGs are the ones done by Bioware. A tie between Neverwinter Nights and Mass Effect. I also like The Witcher. Great game too.

Tell me why Diablo does not qualify as RPG

RPG isn't even a real "category". I just used the word RPG because 95% of the people seem to get what i'm refering to.
For me Diablo is definetly an RPG, you level up a character, obtain skills, increase stats and gather loot to make said character look better and perform better, you do quests etc etc.

Sorry, but as long as you can only shoot, hit, smash, hack or cast damaging spell on your enemies, that doesn't count as role-playing game. If you can only role-play a character who only deals with agression and combat, that's an action game, not a true role-playing one. Diablo's genre is a hack and slash with levels.

Exactly. The only role you can get into in Diablo is "hacker and slasher". There's no other way to solve any quests.

MMORPGs are in a different league depsite the fact it has RPG right there in the name? There's something I'm not getting here.

Says Diablo isn't an RPG, chooses Mass Effect as his favourite RPG.

The first Mass Effect actually was a legitimate RPG. Not the best one in the series, but it had several RPG elements.

MMORPGs are in a "whole different league" because they require you to interact with others to some extent.
They are still RPGs, though (or at least they use RPG mechanics in terms of skills, talents and abilities).

Chrono Trigger, FF6, Terranigma, DragonAge Origins, Arcanum, Baldur's 2, Diablo2

Also got very disappointed with MassEffect 1,
so many ppl love it, but I found so many flaws.. and knowing that the ending is gonna suck, it is not looking good for me.. gonna play anyway

Mass Effect 1 was a nice story, decent action, but had too much downtime methinks, especially with the repetitive nature of the side missions (that rover got quite annoying). However, the games definitely get progressively better, and the ending options might be a bit silly, but not enough to ruin a great series. For the majority of the actual play experience, I found that 3>2>1 by far, so you really should keep going if you already stuck it out through the first one.

damn, those sidequests! haha
the main quest is in a state of race, to trigger or to stop evil, and it makes you stop worryng about that to take care of some endangered, missing human crews
and every 'dungeon', cave, ship and planets that you find have the exact same layout..
I shall go for me2 in a couple of months o/

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect, Fallout, Arcanum, Arx Fatalis, Anachronox and more :).

Also from the recent ones, Expeditions: Conquistador is pretty damn cool!

Mother 3. Only naming that one because no one else is and it's one of the very best out there. Favorite RPG storytelling.

  1. Neverwinter Nights
  2. Gothic II
  3. NOX

For me, the best RPG ever is Neverwinter Nights hands down (the first game + expansions), looking forward to replaying it sometime soon. Gothic II would be the second for me. It is quite rare that a sequel exceeds its predecessor, but this was the case with Gothic II (and the first game was really good as well). Third is NOX, probably not a very well-known game, but I think it was great. If you are an RPG lover, haven't played NOX and don't mind older games, definitely go for it! Unfortunately, it is not available in Steam store.

Fallout 2! And Planescape: Torment... And Baldur's Gate 2. Well... Maybe The Witcher too... But Fallout 2 is 1st on my list and always will be. Played it in 2000 for the first time and fell in love. I have almost 500 hours of gameplay in Skyrim on Steam. If I tried to count hours spent with Fallout 2... I suppose it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I played it for more that 1000 hours. Fallout 2 Restoration Project made this game brillant. It adds tons of content + patches to run game smoothly on new PC's and in any resolution you want.

Quest 64 is one of my all time favorite games, so it easily tops my list of RPGs. Coming up close behind that though is almost every Shin Megami Tensei game ever.

Well, I just really enjoyed the "build your own" skillset and semi-turn based battles. The story was mediocre, the balancing was meh, it was pretty much standard N64 graphics. Another of my favorite games is Hybrid Heaven, for essentially the same reasons.
