The first thing I bought was The Orange Box back at Christmas 2010 since Team Fortress 2 wasn't f2p yet. I'm pretty sure I ended up liking the other games in it more, to be honest. ^_^'
Then flash forward an year to the next Christmas and Orcs Must Die! was what brought me back (despite me already having pirated it before I still wanted to have it on Steam and play it again). And from there on the good sales on other great games kept me interested. :D

I recently had my 9-year Steam-iversary.

I didn't have Steam until I installed my physical copy of Portal, which I had got as a Christmas gift.

The first Steam key I activated (after Portal) was for Defense Grid, which is a nice game. It's one of the games that taught me I like Tower Defense games.

The first things I bought through the Steam Store (all at once, during the 2009 Winter Sale), were:

Burnout Paradise
AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! (aka "AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity")
Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds Survivor
Universe at War: Earth Assault

Burnout was great; the first Steam game I ever put 100+ hours into.
AaAaAA!!! was entertaining enough; I should probably go back and play it some more. Finish it, get the achievements...
I played one of the Shadowgrounds games a little. It wasn't bad, but didn't keep my attention.
Universe at War.... several years later, and I still haven't played it! Oy!

I really don't remember the first game I bought on steam, buying on bundle sites were much cheaper, I remember buying skyrim early on though. I've had counterstrike 1.6 since I can remember but didn't buy that myself.

Congratulations! My first purchase was Counter-Strike 1 Anthology.
