So, yeah. Mayben I've come to the wrong place, but I need some help regarding the update from Windows 8 to 8.1

The thing is when i built my pc i formatted my HDD and only made 5GB of space on the OS drive, and the Win 8.1 update is 4GB so i dont have enough space, and I'm not ready to reformat the whoole thing, so i was wondering if there was an easier way to go about installing the 8.1 update.

Thank you guys for the help :D

Edit: Thanks to you guys my problem got fixed. Thank you once more!

Get EaseUS Partition Manager and set it to at least 30GB for the OS. No formatting needed.

5 GB left in OS drive and you still thinking of adding 4 GB?
Ehhh....

Well, just open Disk Management by pressing Win + X. Right click on a drive to "Shrink Volume". Then extend the volume of your OS drive.

Resize the OS partition using Partition Magic or similiar tool. Existing partitions can be resized without loss of data.

BTW, for Windows 8 you neeed at least 20 GB.

  • backup everything important to an external drive/usb key/cloud
  • download and install partition manager: http://minitool.com/partition-manager.html
  • download, install and run ccleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
  • download, install and run disk defrag: http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/ : defrag and optimize all partitions
  • reboot
  • disconnect from internet
  • terminate every non-essential process and background application from the task manager (if you're unsure, leave this: don't gamble here)
  • run partition manager and shrink the 2nd partition by at least 15GB (but I'd recommend 25GB+), then resize the OS partition to fill the emptied space
  • as it starts, cross your finger
  • if successful, create a celebration GA ;)
