Yes, the world will end for the people who believe in it. This is because the Eartth will still be here on the 22nd doing its thing, and for those people believing in an earlier end, it will mean their world-view and their believes will be shattered, so their world as they know it will be completely ruined and destroyed.

I most certainly do not believe the world will end on the 21st of December 2012. To take it seriously for one second is ridiculous.

The world will certainly change as we know it after 21/12/12.

I love how people refute the end of the world nonsense with the defense that the Mayan's year was ~.25 days shorter than the Gregorian year, it's like they actually would believe it if it wasn't for that. Why not refute it for what those who believe it treat it as: mysticism.

I don't know anybody or have ever heard of anybody who seriously believes that the world is going to end anytime soon.

The Mayan calendar just restarts, a fact people fail to understand, 21.21.12 is the end of the last cycle before it starts over.
It just happens to be on a very special date where so very many galactic entities line up very rarely (once a millenia or so) it is likely to see some cosmic or planetary event, but the end of the world...no.
Just a possible bad day at worst.
It is human nature to be curious and cautious, alarmists however will always play on peoples fear of what is not known.

tl;dr : The Mayans didn't account for leap years. If the world was going to end, it should have ended many years ago. The end.

"Beware of stupid people in large groups." Too many people are sheep...can you say baaaaa? I knew that ya could. The best thing to do on that date is to kick back with some friends in some form of seating, with your favorite beverage, around a bonfire, do some fireworks. Grill out, have fixins and appropriate junk food , chocolate ~ ya know, all the important things. When you're finally tired, make sure the fire is out and go to bed. Get up the next day and go on with SSDD.

People have such boring lives they cling to things like this if only to give them some excitement for a little while. This date will come and go and be forgotten then at some point down the road another doomsday will be announced and they'll cling on to that one^^
