Some trader account tried to add me on Steam today. That's not unusual, I get friends requests all the time from suspect accounts. Usually I just ignore them and move on.

This time, I was somewhat impressed by the level of craftiness that person has put into their profile to make it sound legit.

This guy's profile has many of the telltale sing of a scammer, "only dealing in high-value items", just one game in library, etc.

However it shows a few things that could confuse a newbie trader:

  • Front and center there's a big "certificate" from Steam support signed by Gaben himself (yeah sure)
  • He's linking his "Steam license" (which is basically a modified copy of the Steamrep page with added "informations")
  • The profile is plastered with Steam/Valve related logo and links
  • He's showing the Crazy Administrator badge (From GabeN: The Final Decision)
  • There is a hidden giveaway on this line (just to see if you're paying attention)
  • His favorite guide is "How to avoid scammers in TF2, CS:GO and Steam in general"
  • He has a long-winded paragraph in his comment section about having impersonators and how he's not the one who scams people.

I'm wondering how many unsuspecting users will actually fall for such a trick.

Edit: Apparently, he's actually emulating another suspect account and simply copied the fake certificate from there.

Edit 2: This guy would appear to be the original account being impersonated. At least that one doesn't have any certificate from Valve and clearly states that he doesn't do any item verification or middlemanning.

Edit 3: I removed the link to the guy's profile as I was told by support that it could be considered calling out even if the user is not registered on Steamgifts. You will have to make due with a screenshot of his profile.

That guys got balls, the "certificate" would put me off. I find the easiest way to not get scammed is to never trade :3!

9/10 for the effort, needs moar games in the library. Maybe a great bait for noobs, but to a more experienced user the entire profile just screams "Im gonna scam u".

They usually avoid adding too many games to their scammer accounts since they know they're gonna get busted at some point. Still, with so many free game keys being given away all the time, it's not exactly hard to add a few more games.

He only has CSGO, he's either someone's smurf or they used this account to test cheats (he played for a bit) and thought to get some more profit out of it.

Well he / she did some work to get his profile... 'certified' :D Dunno how long those will help though, hopefully there won't be many users scammed this time.

He will get community-banned real fast for impersonating a Valve employee. However more will come.

Curious on how he got badges for games he doesn't have.
I buy cards in the market for games I don't have and yet, can't craft badges for them.

I've crafted badges for games I didn't have before. Maybe you have to wait a number of days for the card to become "tradable" before you can use it to craft a badge? I usually get my extra cards through trades so I wouldn't know.

May have to try again then, I tried back before the wait time was set before you could resell.

You can craft badges from untradable cards, just the resulting emotes and backgrounds will be untradable for a while.

You sure? I don't have CSGO but I crafted some badges of it.

You can craft any game badge as long as you get the full set. I have several such badges on both of my accounts.

Nearly all of his badges were crafted today.

edit: I've never done item trading so can someone explain why anyone would use him as a middleman? If he doesn't handle any cd key or money trades, why would anyone need him? To verify that the trade offers are equal in value?

You use a middleman to infer some legitimacy to a scam

I love the grammatical errors present throughout the profile, including a few in the "certificate". Looks like Valve doesn't have enough money to hire a copy editor for their own "admins". :p

I just hope no one finds out that Gabe is actually a sock puppet and I am the true CEQ of Valve. (CEQ is like a CEO, but clearly higher in the organization because Q comes after O and P and it wasn't a typo!)

I will take all your high value skins and trading cards and keep them safe for you from scammers. Since I am the CEQ (totally honest, have a certificate and a PhD in the field of Valve and an M.D. in Steamworks I am even willing to share them with you. They open in MS Paint because everyone has that probably).

Now due to trade restrictions I can do nothing about. I will have to hold your valuable items for 200 years. Now I know that sounds like a long time, but as mentioned I can do nothing about the trade restriction, but you will be able to rest assured that your items will not be swindled out of your inventory during that time because they would be in my ultra secure CEQ inventory-o-dex-a-ma-jig TM. You will be 100% immune from future scammers. I don't even charge a fee for this so clearly, I just care about helping traders.

Everyone should really take the "Am I safe from scammers" test. Since I am the CEQ, I have a special profile image. If the center of my image looks pink or purple to you, your account is in grave danger and at risk from scammers. You should send me your items immediately to prevent them from being stolen by future scammers. Once future scammers have your items, there is nothing even I, the CEQ can do to get them back. Since we know colour blind people exist, if the center of my image appears like the face of a cat then you are safe, otherwise you are in grave danger too.

For the love of kittens, if you believe what I just wrote, change your password on Steam to something other than Password or 123456. 90% of what I say on here is either to help people or to make a joke!

In case the hidden text wasn't obvious, this is a joke... that profile looks so very fake... but I liked the Crazy Admin touch to it.

Hm, I wonder if someone reported certificate to Valve and whether they will file crime report (forgery).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt it. Even if they did, there's not much the law enforcement could do, especially if the lives in a different country. But if Valve notices this, they probably immediatly ban that account (and then he will just create more accounts).

They can (should) ban all accounts of a person identified by payment personal data (afair making payment is required to trade gifts/items from the account).
Idk if nothing, criminal charges can probably make problems if he ever would want to get US visa.

Maybe, but do you honestly think Valve cares about that? For them taking legal actions just won't do anything, so they most likely won't waste resources on it.

It's not really difficult to use other payment methods or something like that. If this guy really wants to continue, he will.
