Lets just clear one thing, I love all RPGs.(LsSx) ALL RPG (5)

my problem is what we call them. i mean after all, every video game is a role-playing game.
this came to me as i was checking HB RPG sale www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/rpg-sale (ends in few hours)
all of them are nice, but they dont play the same. and i understand there are sub-genre and cross-genre.
But how can i recommend a game i cant describe.

Theory:

I think games are to be categorized by play mechanics, what do you see (POV) and what you do (Actions)
then we can go into minor details as game systems (leveling/looting/skills,,,). as any game can add Systems, but cant really change core POV/action
Sure some do mix POV/action, but very few are successful.

Testing:

Skyrim: 1st person Questing (FPQ) with a Fantasy setting and Character Progression. also Dragons
Witcher: 3rd person Questing (3PQ)? with a Fantasy setting and Character Progression. also sexy time
FFXV: ... Maybe i should rethink my theory

my latest game dilemma was Disco Elysium
I was trying to discuss it with friends and had a hard time explaining it to them, as RPG kept dropping and everyone had his own RPG in mind.
and i did not know any similar game.

anyway, this was all an excuse to make a GA or the giveaway is my way of saying sorry for the long rant
tell me what you think? how would you improve this? also hit the subscribe button and like this video

What do you think of when you hear RPG?

View Results
Borderlands 2
DARK SOULS II
Darkest Dungeon
Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition
FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster
NieR:Automata
Stardew Valley
Sword Legacy: Omen
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

"RPG" makes me think "Baldur's Gate" or "Dungeons and Dragons". But I agree somewhat; both of those could just as easily be categorized as Fantasy or Fantasy/Tactical.

Probably just another case of language/labeling being shaped more by de facto standards than by organization. There's tons of of things in language that are misnomers/misleading/poorly designed but people use anyway.

Good luck changing it tho... we can't even get onto metric here in the States.

Well, RPG originally was table too like DnD and others
Thats why games based off these are called cRPG or RPG for short
And that's was mostly to English speaking nation as there was not much translation at the time.
At least that's my understanding to the history.
But since video games is it's own media, I think it should be categorized by the way you interact with it. RPG can remain as theme/style.

And Metric is kinda too late to bother case. But still used by all scientific institute.

There should be a new sub-genre: Classic RPG, such as The Witcher, FF, Skyrim

What about the classics from the 90s?

I would not call those classic. Apart from maybe old FF games... Classic should be reserved for games in 90s early 00s style...

My first experience was with JRPG, so while I do love them. I've come to appreciate the tactical and the isometric games

JRPGs make me anxious xD
I just feel like turn based fights have less player involvement, and I seriously dread just navigating menus for the same attacks because I got ambushed by the same enemy I can kill easily for the uptenth time. Cosmic Star Heroine helped quite a lot about getting over it, but the genrestill makes me wary. Which is a pity because it has numerous awesome classics and pieces of the gaming history. One day I'll get there :D

As a kid I had no access to PC, so my experience was with JRPG and now modern games
If you look through the thread everyone had different view to what RGP is

Is there any reason not to play M&M series (as example) now? And yes, views can be different, but M&M, Ultima and Wizardry are reference RPGs

The Sims - I hardcore roleplay as someone who actually has an interesting life, successful in his profession, has a loving family, and liked by everyone.

The Ultima series.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, RPGs must include:

  • Player-controlled character development: the player must have some control over how the character improves.
  • Combat or other challenges that are based at least partially on stats, instead of the player skill.
  • Inventory system, consisting of more than just tools, key- and puzzle items.
  • Interaction with non-player characters, typically with a dialogue system.
  • Protagonist(s). Sandbox games such as The Sims and Crusader Kings 2 with no set protagonist are better described as life simulators.

Additionally, core CRPGs are usually party-based, even if that 'party' consists of only a single follower.
Disco Elysium passes all of my checks.

Dude made some very valid points, thanks for sharing
have to disagree on his Film comparison, as games is a different media and the way you interact with it is very important
