For me it was a pc joystick called the P880 from saitek.
It has all the buttons you see + 1 top on each side, pretty simple.
What i liked about it it was that i played a lot of fighter games (ssf2, 3 and 4) with it and you could actually put all 3 fingers on the buttons at the right, just like an arcade joystick, ultras for the top ones.
I dont like any console joystick that doesnt have those 3 buttons, so none of them.

Goldeneye would've been better with a Gamecube controller.

ps4 is mine. it's less plastic-y than the ps3, offers more buttons/feedback, and most importantly I have tiny hands so small controllers are needed for me to be able to press every button without shifting how I hold it.
I also really like my HOTAS. Also has the issue of being too big (and feeling like you're giving something a hj >>)

i guess that would be my old Virtual Pilot Pro. i loved this thing when i was a kid. doesn't look like much today. but back in the day, flying in games like Flight Simulator and Flight Unlimited with it was the best feeling ever (didn't know sex yet back then ^^).
EDIT: uhm, the question was for console controllers. forget it then. xD

(Though that one is on the list, there are much worse ones.)

Haven't held any new generation console controllers in my hand but I'd definitely say PS2/PS3 of the ones I have. I always liked the dual analog layout for games that use two sticks, and for those that don't the DPAD is still in an equally accessible location, also it's nice and compact and doesn't feel fat like the XBOX controllers do.

For 2D games? Where specific d-pad movement was required and more than three buttons were still needed, nothing was greater than the SEGA Saturn Control Pad (successor to the six button Mega Drive/Genesis controller). I still use it thanks to a USB converter.
For all other games, if given a choice on what to use? Wii U Pro Controller is currently my go to choice and favourite. Comfortable to hold, has all the buttons I require, Bluetooth, incredibly long battery life (unlike poor life in Xbox One and PS4 controllers to me), and works quite well on PC for almost every genre of games a controller can work on with both solid Nintendo d-pad and analogue stick.
Honorary mention for a great controller, but not the best and actually a third party. The PS1 ASCII Grip for Playstation One. A one-handed controller for the number of puzzle, turn based strategy, RPGs, and so forth titles in which swift constant action wasn't required. For someone who at the time had broken one of his hands and still wanted to play game, it was wonderful to own one of those.

Original Xbox S-Controller is my fave by far. I still use 'em for PC gaming in conjunction with Xpadder key remapping software :-)

Maybe it's because it's the one I use the most. But I like the Xbox 360 controller the best.

I believe it to be the Playstation, dual shock version. It was slightly updated for each generation of the Playstation line. The most recent of the line, the PS4 controller, no longer looks like a mere update of original controller, however.
Earlier generations may disagree, and say that the 3-button Genesis controller was the best; as it allowed more varied -- I would say complex" here -- gameplay compared to the aging two-button NES one. The original three-button Genesis controller also allowed comfortable play as your thumb would easily move between the three buttons, while your other thumb would be sliding within the d-pad.
The Playstation example above parallels that of the Saturn controller, born out of its predecessor -- the legendary 6-button Genesis controller. This was produced, in part to please players of Street Fighter II, which required six attack buttons to play properly. It was never as popular as the comfortable -- some would say perfect -- original 3-button Genesis controller, mentioned earlier.
What do you say about the above, too?
Your opinions please, and thanks
