Ukrainian

(very close to Czech variant - it's pretty common for most Ukrainians to understand Polish and Czech, cause languages are pretty much similar)

  • Good morning - "Dobrogo ránku" (Доброго ранку)
  • Good evening - "Dobrogo vetschorá!" (Доброго вечора)
  • Bon Appetite - "Ná zdorovjá!" (На здоров'я!) or "Smatsсhnogo!" (Смачного!)
  • How are you? - "Jak siá májesh?" (Як ся маєш?)
  • What's the time? - "Kotrá godyná?" (Котра година?)
  • Why did czech president Vaclav Klaus steal the pen? - "Tschomu tscheskyj prezydent Vátsláv Kláus potsupyv rutschku?" (Чому чеський президент Вацлав Клаус поцупив ручку?)

Notes:

Written in Latin is a transcription only. Incomprehensible something in brackets is a correct translation into Ukrainian, written in Cyrillic alphabet used in Ukraine, Russia and some other CIS/Eastern Europe countries.

á - should be read as in French phrase "à la guerre comme à la guerre"

u - should be read as double "O" but not prolonged.

Tsch - the closest is English "Ch" as in "chinese"

je-ja should be read as "ye" in yellow or "ya" in "yankee"**

:)

It's a bit exaggerated, but not entirely. ;)

My relatives definitely had strong regional accents.

e.g. "You'ontoo?" Translation: "You want to?"

e.g. "I'm fixin' ta." Translation: "I am about to perform this task."

e.g. "I'ma" Translation: "I am going to do something."

I still have that last one. :)

I live in central Texas and that is not exaggerated but rather spot on!
Although Good morning is usually Just "Mornin'" with a nod of the head. "Howdy" is mostly used by the
country bumpkins.

There are northern, central and southern Texas accents and language nuances as well. But all sounding the same to yank's :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I say "Howdy" and I'm a "city slicker". :)

Also, I hate to call you out, but although you may live in Central Texas (as do I), you are not native, I presume?

Everyone that grew up here knows there are three Texas accents: East Texas, West Texas, and South Texas. Well, there's also Cajun, but that's a foreign dialect.

;)

Born in Galveston.

I Just categorized them as N,S, and central how I perceived it. Never been out West. I lived in Galveston, Houston, Dallas, and now Waco. So maybe that judgment is based on those locations.

When I moved from Galveston to Dallas people could recognize I was from "down south".

But yes Texan here, city slicker myself.
