Frankly, I have not given money to steam for a long time. All the money I buy games for, I received from the sale of things from the games on the trading floor.
While other stores do not have such functions, I remain attached to steam (my income does not allow me to spend a lot of real money on games).
But sometimes, I buy games in other stores (if I like the price). So, I bought Division 2 in the egs, Warcraft 3 remaster in the Battle.net (how wrong I was) and several games of my childhood in GOG.

Among a lot of other things i think what makes most difference to is the native controller support on steam i can play every game with my dualshock 4 on steam and it just works.
Also Epic is being nice on freebies and low price because they need you (paying customers) it will not be like this forever

Just for the Support alone...There is barely any for other platforms
-Took me forever to get a reasonable response from Epic
-Uplay is so convoluted. You need to log into support after logging into Uplay, and then you just wait forever as it rarely loads.

Most games on Steam aren't even on Epic, so that is one reason. Another reason is achievements and other things like trading cards. Why would I buy the Epic version of the game if I can get the Steam version with extra perks?

I haven't bought a single game on Epic yet. I have taken the free games, but I have no incentive to buy from them when I can get a better version of the game on Steam.

I feel the same about other stores too. GOG is good, and I get games on there that aren't on Steam, but without those extra perks, I am always going to choose Steam to buy most of my games from.

Also, a lot of games I bought on Steam during the recent sale were historical low's over all platforms, so I am paying less and getting the better version of the game.

My reasons for not using Epic launcher:

  • Shady spyware stuff posted on reddit before.
  • Heavy and slow starter.
  • Badly optimized store/ library view.
  • Everytime I logging in with the right password it said that I was wrong and I have to change it again through email (idk what happen to my account tho).
  • Players attraction is basicly rely on Fortnite, which is decreasing fast.
  • Connection to other platform like Uplay is hard to connect (most of the time require me to logging into Epic, then Uplay, then launch the game while steam can automatically signing me in and run the game directly)

Maybe because not every store sells in a currency that's not euro or dollar, which are not everyone's currencies and are absurdly expensive (+ taxes)?

I know this doesn't apply to many people, but at least for me, as a GNU / Linux user, one reason to buy (directly) from the Steam store is because Valve funds a lot of things including Wine, Proton and GPU driver stuff in the Linux kernel, and funding them helps fund that stuff.

So, my primary point is that thanks in large part to them (but not just them), it is now really easy to get the majority of Windows games to work really well in GNU / Linux, all from within the (native) Steam for Linux client.

So other than fanboying, is there really any other reason on why to purchase games on Steam? (steam keys not counted).

Well, not sure why so much prejudice in just one sentence, but I'll answer anyway.
Don't know if it will matter much or if you will think it's valid with such biased post you created.

You see, I have a few reasons:

  1. It is cheaper for me. I don't pay in dollar so any other store [except Epic maybe] is much more expensive for me.
  2. I like having all my games in 1 place. When you have many game platforms you end up forgetting about them. I wouldn't remember my games in another platform, let alone play them. Would be wasted money.
  3. The amount of games available. And most of all, in the genres I enjoy.
  4. Steam keys. We have many good bundle sites. I rarely purchase bundles these days, but I used to buy them a lot up to a couple of years ago.
  5. Steam features: cloud save, achievements, forum, cards, profile backgrouds...
  6. I disagree with Epic policies. I'll never buy from them. I'd rather pay more [and have with Detroit, Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain] to own a game and play it on Steam. If I disagree with the price all I have to do is wait for a sale.
  7. I don't agree with EA and Ubisoft practices either. So I don't buy from them on Steam or their own platforms.

With so many games available I don't have to buy anywhere else. I don't have to give my money to Epic, Ubisoft or EA. If I can't afford a game I'll just wait for a discount and play the ones I already own.
I'm sure that are other reasons that I can't remember or haven't considered so far.

Even the sales are always pretty bad nowadays on steam and you can 99.99999999% of the time find a game cheaper elsewhere

I disagree with you. We can find a lot of games with 85-90% discount during sale. The sales are the same they have always been. The problem is that people these days want a game to be discount at 90% just a month after release. They have no patience and the don't value the work put into making that game.
Price is far from being the most important thing for me. Even with a limited budget. Many times I bought games with 25-35% discount and even games on release because they are the ones I want to play. Rather play them than a bunch of 90% games I won't enjoy. That's what I did this past sale. Had X to spend and bought a few games I wanted and not 200 cheap ones. And if I don't agree with the price I'll wait. I'm not gonna die if I don't buy a specific game right away.
And like I said, other stores don't matter to me. I don't even remember they exist. I won't go through the trouble of comparing prices and after 6+ years and 5k+ games, I won't start playing on another platform now.
You can say whatever you want, but Steam is still by far the best gaming platform available [price aside in some occasions]. Epic was supposed to compete with Steam and even that they can't do right. Their exclusivity policy is hated by many. Ubisoft and EA never did [compete] either but Epic didn't learn from their mistake.

I agree! I don't know how I forgot to mention cloud save, achievements, forum and cards. That forum, and its users, it has helped me solve so many issues with games already. The community hub of a game is a great place to go if you want to find solutions, suggestions, or even just discuss about that mindblowing ending a game may have had. With spoiler tags, I mean, ahem.

Also, I tend to do the same strategy. If it's a game I want, but it can wait, I tend to wait for sales. I hardly pre-order now, after some disappointments with Ubisoft's games. (I just got SoTR now, after two years, and I don't even mind it that much. There were lots of things to play in the meanwhile.)
And about Epic, I don't feel I know enough about them or their policies, but that thing with Shenmue 3 and Metro Exodus was kinda awful.

I'm not very familiar with other stores, other than GOG, Uplay and Origin. I've heard GreenManGaming have some good deals, and Nuuvem too, but to me, what makes me stick to Steam is a conjunction of features and experiences.

I used to get cracked games some years ago, when I didn't know much about gaming in general. The PC market was kinda abandoned by Microsoft, and the prices for games were huge (at least where I live). Then I heard about AMD giving away Dirt 3, and that was the first time I actually installed Steam. I feel that was the real beginning of my PC gaming experience. The deals were crazy, and it convinced me cracked games weren't worth it.

Also, I believe Steam did a lot for PC gaming over the last years. The deals were a great weapon against piracy, back when many companies would refuse to release their games on PC because of it. PC gaming had that bad image of not being worth the investiment, and I believe Steam was a good way to prove that wrong. They kept pushing with inovations, like BigPicture and others. And I agree SteamOS didn't turn to be much, but Big Picture and the suport for game controllers was a big plus to me. I'm glad I don't need to mess with thirdparty Xinput injectors, or keybinders anymore.

Above all, I feel like Steam is where I have most my games and friends. Even if I have to use Origin/Uplay for a few games, I still come back to Steam.
A side note, though, is that due to CDProjekt's way of treating their constumers, I've been growing a lot of consideration for GOG. I'm sure I want to get CP2077 from there!

One of the most important reason for me is that Steam supports Linux community. They've done a great job and I'm very thankful for it.

I only buy there as I still have some steam wallet left (but the fact that I still have it shows that I seldom buy there)
I'm with you, only price counts, all the other features are nice, but I don't care for them at all.
I haven't bought Uplay games on steam, since they were always cheaper to get them directly there (or keys which only exists for uplay)

Because of steam wallet and number of games available. Also overlay/profile still most developed.

I only really purchase during the big sale events, plus I won't purchase on Epic because I wanna keep my library all in one place. Don't really feel like having 3 launchers on my desktop. Plus, I live for achievements!

Well, you are forgetting places that regional pricing matters. A game from Humble Bundle with ½75 discount is more expensive than Steam's base price.

Well, when I buy from steam store, I mostly buy with money made from selling cards, backgrounds and emoticons on the market. So I do not really pay anything (I could not withdraw the money nor use it on anything else). From all other source, I might pay little, but I still pay.

could not withdraw the money

There are ways to do that (at about 30% conversion loss)

And then you can use the free Steambux to buy bundles, win-win.

Well, yes, but if I buy with my marketplace money on steam sales and count it at only 70% real money, then I do get good prices ... So not really worth it, I think.
And I do not really trust these "ways" to withdraw money ...

If you buy bundles with the withdrawn money you often get much huger discounts and even extra keys to give here for already owned games. There are plenty of trustworthy ways that people have been using for years. For personal purchases it might be just an extra hassle for most people, but since Steam has made gifting gifts almost impossible unless region restricted and really fast to get the winner before sale ends it's been a much more viable option. It's like a free level 10 here :)

The reason I got steam first is by how easy it is to adquie games on Mexico, without habing to use a debit card. Im too paranoid to link any kind of sensitive information on the internet, so beign able to just go charge funs wtih a gif card or a payment method at a convenient store, works great for me.

Besides that the Steam Ui its pretty good, sure it have its issues but even with the issues its better perfomance than other launche's Ui. And ofocurse Steam offers the biggest community on PC.

Just the other day I was chatting with a friend of mine and Gothic came up. He checked and Gothic 2 was like -10 bucks. Gothic Universe (1, 2 and 3 combined) sells at one Euro via resellers....

2.40€ cheapest legit reseller in 2014 and 3.99€ cheapest on Steam in 2020.

Yes if you want to support the black market instead of legit stores. Probably 1 cent worth of rubbles in some even shadier store.

I'm not suggesting anything (welp, checking prices, 'I guess) but you're proving my point. It's usually cheaper to buy games outside of steam. And no, 4€ isn't too expensive for two of the best RPGs ever made (excluding Gothic 3 here).

I never got that "steam is fantastic" vibe to begin with. Maybe I'm too old.... I grew up with the Atari2600 and then advanced to the C64 and my alltime favorite: the AMIGA. I think I had one legit game on the latter or maybe two. And in the mid 90s I used every kilobyte to torrent the living hell out of my 56kps elsa modem XD Now that I'm old and grey I actually do buy my games but still look for a good deal. But I'm not here to argue. Fanatical is great. So is Humble or Indie or GMG or especially GOG.

You still have an ATARI2600? I wish I hadn't sold mine way back when. The Amiga is the greatest gaming machine of all times imho but I'm not sure how it'd fare with people who didn't grow up with it bc nostalgia.... Anywho you should check out the "King Of Kong" documentary (its available on yt)!
