Could be your computer components like the GPU overheating.

This is a known problem, are you running a 32-bit version of windows by any chance?

Wouldn't people post their own topic-specific thread if they need help with something?

But this is simple...what you said is more complicated .... -.-.
Here you can Ctrl+F in mozilla firefox or whatever browser & anyway i think it's cleaner to keep it in one thread :)
And maybe STICKY ?:D

The simplest solution for Steam problems is to do a Google search, though.

Mind, half the reason a Google search works so well is that Steam game problems tend to exist for years. Everything I've ever had to look up returned solutions posted to the Steam forums anywhere from one to two years prior.

There's that, but also doing all hardware issues in one thread is pretty silly. In all my years, I've never seen it done that way. Lumping all those subjects in one thread would make it much more difficult to navigate and locate useful information.

One thread, one problem.

Steam cannot update my laptop's video card driver.
My laptop's specs are: HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition Notebook PC, Intel i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz), 8GB DDR3 RAM, 750GB HDD, 17.3" Screen, 2GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics (Copy and paste. :D)
When I type dxdiag into run, my display portion says "Mobile Intel(R) HD graphics" instead of my video card. I can't seem to play certain games well at all.
Any advice?

Download the driver from the manufacturer's site, this case being ATI, search for the specific model there.

Have you tried going into bios and changing the default video card?

You are currently using graphics integrated on your CPU. Try to find setting about it in BIOS.

I have tried to download an update on the AMD website but they always refer me to a verification software. I install the software but it...does not seem to be able to detect my graphics card at all.
How do I go into BIOS?

(these are for all of the above 3. :D Thanks)

Edit: I went into BIOs, but I can't change some values. When I go into BIOS, I see Main, security, diagnostics, system config.
In Main, I see the specs for my laptop, but I cannot change anything.

Try to find your both video cards in Device manager. Some notebooks have automatic switching of videocards, when needed

I've no idea why you'd be scared of updating a driver. Are you worried the gremlins might interfere?

Some cards have software such as the "Catalyst Control Center". Check and see if there is a global settings section allowing you to change the settings from "integrated" to "discrete". I have a high-end Radeon myself, and it switches automatically. I really hope this helps and I will keep checking for a solution.

Set the exe file to run as administrator inside the compatibility menu located in the Steam games directory. Also either set the system paging file to automatic or increase the size. Test Drive Unlimited only calls for 512MB of RAM and is a older game, so you shouldn't have trouble running it. If you have shared video RAM, that will take away from the physical RAM and also hinder performance. Hope this helps.

Yeah. Different story now. You need 2GB of dedicated RAM just to boot the game. You should have a minimum of 4GB of dedicated RAM on a 64-bit system. Just keep in mind that if the game requires 2GB of RAM the system still needs to breathe, so it's a "the more the merrier" situation. The good thing is RAM is cheap, so boost that machine all the way to the manufacturer's limitations.

I played and cleared Toki Tori. Some time later, I moved my whole steam folder/library from my laptop internal HDD to a new external HDD.
Now when I try to play Toki Tori from my Steam library again, it says the executable is missing. If I go to the Toki Tori folder in the external HDD and run the tokitori.exe by myself, the game don't start.
I went to library/properties and it says my game is installed in C: (not in E:, my new HDD), but I don't see an option to change it :(

How (and which folders) have you moved? Have you tried to verify the game cache and do other games work?

I tried the option to "verify local files", but it keeps loading for hours. Other games work fine.

I really don't know how to do it. I tried using the option "verify local files", but it keeps loading for hours.

right click the title in your steam library and go to "delete local content". After that just click the install button on the library page. This may or may not delete your save files (not sure with toki tori in particular), but it should let you play the game at least.

Thanks, it worked! Now I can play the game again. Even my save file is still intact! :)

When trying to run TF2 in a virtual OS in VMWare, the entire game becomes whiter than it should be. Can a kind soul help me get through this?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

First question is why are you running TF2 in a virtual environment? Virtual OS emulation usually, if not always performs worse because it requires a OS to run it. This takes away resources that would be made available if it was installed in the host OS to begin with.

To answer your question, you must first realize that most virtual operating system only install VGA drivers or generic drivers to get the system running. It is usually up to the end-user to find OS specific drivers to make the d3d functioning properly. Since most Windows-based games require 3D acceleration, addition drivers are usually required. Also making sure DirectX and OpenGL are up to date is important. Hope this helps.

To answer your question, I was wanting to see if I could use it for idling when I cannot use steam in the main OS.

Ok, cool. I was just wondering. Did you get it working?

While the game can launch always, the virtual OS always wants to put more white on it until I see a steam notification or open the overlay.

Playing Company of Heroes (only happens in CoH) and after about 1/2 an hour of playing clicking one specfic one of the 'action' buttons in the box on the bottom right of the screen causes my game to go into windowed mode and bugs out any flames / explosion effects for the next 30 seconds or so after switching back to full screen o.0 I would google it but it doesn't do it every time I click there, not even after the usual 1/2 hour.

Really annoying.
All my drivers and stuff are up to date, the game runs fine other than this and there is no way as far as I know to 'replicate' this as it seemingly happens at random after, as I say, 1/2 hour gameplay o.0

I disapprove of this thread - and I'm already annoyed by all those "please help me build/buy my gaming pc / gaming laptop / graphics card"

1) this is not a support forum, neither for hardware nor for software

2) people will not use this thread, they are too lazy to use the search function and even if they would find the thread, they would create a new topic if they don't receive an answer within 5 minutes, because not only are they lazy, they are also impatient

I have no problem with people asking for help on SG, though you're right it's kind of a silly place for tech support. This thread is a bad idea regardless. +1

As someone who knows what a bloody search engine is; I couldn't agree more. Quit asking SG for tech support and utilise Google like the rest of us.

My computer keeps returning to the desktop on its own when playing games. The game doesn't close down but its just annoying as hell having to click back on it. I can't find any running applications that could be doing this and my computer was new from Christmas so it hasn't got a lot of stuff on.

Lately whenever I've been playing Far Cry 3 and Crysis, my keyboard keeps pressing c by itself. I've reconnected my keyboard, uninstall then reinstall, rolled back to previous then update but nothing seems to work.

This is a known issue with the DLC. Some players find when they delete the DLC the sound returns, but this is a dumb fix. Ubisoft is working on the fix and it should be delivered in a later patch. Hold tight unless you find another way of fixing this issue from other forums or help support. Also, you could always submit a support ticket to Ubisoft directly. Hope this helps.
