So I've been looking for a decent PC to get lately, preferably a desktop. And I'm thinking about getting an Alienware X51. Its specs are:

Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit

8GB (2 X 4GB) Dual Channel DDR3 up to 1600MHz

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640 1GB GDDR5

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3330 (6M Cache, up to 3.0 GHz)

1TB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200RPM) 32MB Cache

DW1506 Wireless-N WLAN Half Mini-Card

240W External Power supply

Would this computer be good to get for games like Far Cry or Skyrim? It's $750 and that's about the most I can pay for a new computer. Any other suggestions? Thanks

EDIT:
Used some of the links that people gave me... how's this? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/onecarmel/saved/1yjV

Never get Alienware. With a little bit of research and effort to pick your parts and build it, you'll be saving a lot of money.

They are the Apple of PCs. Twice the bucks for half the bang.
But they do look flashy though.

X51 is a desktop.

Depends on the game and the connection. I highly doubt he participates in pro competitions.

If you absolutely need a laptop that's not a bad choice. Video card is a little weak. If you can go with a desktop you can get more for the money.

i would recommend building your own computer if you have the experience or know someone that could build it for you. generally prebuilt computers meant for gaming and especially alienware computers are overpriced.

For 788 USD you can buy a PC with Intel Core i5-3470 and nVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost Edition http://pcpartpicker.com/p/UO38

Don't get it. It is overpriced.
For that money you could get at least a GeForce 650ti, or a 650 ti boost as the other guy said. Check out some AMD cards too, they are generally cheaper for around the same performance... for $1000AU I got a i7-3770, a 660ti, 1.5 TB of storage in two HDDs.

A 640 for far cry 3 is playable, but not 60 fps. (medium settings)

For Skyrim, its good enough; Skyrim is a surprisingly GPU-easy game (I used to play on a 9600gt). I would be more worried about the CPU packing up with scripts and the game crashing or freezing. (probs medium settings, i used to play on low)

Oh, and a system with a 640, according to nVidia at least, requires a 350w power supply, so I don't know how that is going to work.

Also, the WiFi card is pretty much useless for games like Skyrim and Far Cry, unless you are getting mods or updates, in which case, i recommend wired internet.

All in all, don't buy it.

650 is a weak card. 660 for gaming at the very least.

He only wants to play Skyrim and Far Cry (I'm assuming Far Cry 3). Unless he's going for max settings at 60 fps, which is very high expectations for $750, a 650 is good enough, and means he can spend more on a CPU, which is what Skyrim is going to be chewing up. Yes, if he can afford it a 660 would be better, but he has a small budget; fitting a 660 in there would require compromise on other parts of the system, for example the mobo. Also, he would need to get a better PSU, which is even more money.

640 is terrible, i3 is alright but ehh, 240 power supply not good...

Just build, you can get a great PC for that price if you build, do you want to run Far Cry 3/Skyrim on low/maybe medium? Or on high/max? Build if high/max.

Those specs are awful. If you want to get an nVidia card, at least try to get 660 Ti. Also, That PSU is not going to cut it. Try searching for something around 450 - 600W.

640 no, at least an GTX 660 or GTX 660 Ti;
240 power supply it's too bad, buy an 650 power supply

Alienware is terribly overpriced. If you are unable to build a PC yourself, you would have better luck going to cyberpower or Ibuypower. Both cost a bit, but you get a bit more bang for your buck.

Building a rig yourself though is the best approach. Id suggest maybe seeing if you have any PC enthusiasts for friends.

When buying an Alienware, most of your cash goes to the fact that it is an Alienware. The PC isn't actually good specification wise. GT 640 will hardly run anything on medium, with decent frame rate. The super small PSU won't allow you to upgrade either. Might be the wisest choice to just build your own, or pay a friend to do it for you, if you're afraid to mess something up.

That computer looks like complete shit. I could build an equivalent computer for about $350.

Are those really alienware specs? I thought they were a little more impressive... Good thing I built my own pc I guess.

ITX are very small. 670s fit in there too.

Of course but you're going to be paying extra for the size. This thing is just slightly larger than an xbox or PS3. If you can even find an ITX case of similar size, a build with it won't be cheap

Edit: And it's possible to put a 660 in the X51

Actually, the price is similar or cheaper than the Alienware. Also, the components are much higher quality than what Dell uses.

I never said it would be more expensive and I fully agree that building it yourself is a much better proposition. I'm just saying that you can't compare some mid tower build you put together to something of this size

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But I'm not trying to compare a mid tower build at all. I'm comparing small form factor to small form factor (ITX).

My original reply was to the $350 guy. All I'm saying is that the X51 can be somewhat justified in its price

The internet hates Alienware for a very good reason. Do not get. If you do, you'll be kicking yourself in the face later.

I.e. Those parts don't even cost $450. If you don't wanna trust us, ask the people in any computer hardware forum aside from Alienware.com
