I could never pick a single favorite anything. There are different reasons to like many different things and nothing ever stands out as a favorite above everything else for me. There are great movies from every decade all the way back to the 20s.
Stand By Me is one of my favorites as well. Another favorite from around that time that is somewhat similar is White Water Summer. I saw it at a very young age, so I am probably biased, but I still love it today. It's definitely nowhere near as good as Stand By Me, but it's very close for me because of the nostalgia.
Edit: One of the oldest "favorites" of mine is The Kid (1921). There's 6 or 7 other silent films I like a lot, but this one left the biggest impression on me.

Rock-a-Doodle (1991)
I rather miss Don Bluth animations. They always had a lot more substance to them than most anything else out around the same period. Nevermind his more distinctive works, like The Secret of NIMH. Especially feeling the loss of such titles of late, what with the questionable quality of recent Disney films, and the fact that in the past half-decade Dreamworks, Disney, and Pixar have all seemed intent on releasing almost nothing but sequels and remakes.
And now, this.

2000 is old? Man, I'm very old..
but the answer is of course the blues brothers. and star wars.
btw for me the late '70s, the '80s and the early '90 is the best time period of all time, for movies. period.

It's weird that a movie "BIG" like the blues brothers has never been done in more recent times, with all the money and technology that they have now. I mean, all those cars destroyed, an entire mall built and destroyed just for a scene, a fucking nazi car launched from a crane..
No recent movie have stuff like this (without CG, of course)

Old is a relative word. Everyone will have their own opinion on what is old to them. There's plenty of people on this site that weren't born when that movie was released, so I could understand if they consider it old.

I have no idea. I just figured because it's a site about gaming that there would be a lot around 15-20. I'm not sure if there is any way to figure that out other than a poll and I think there was one asking about age within the last year or 2.
Edit: Here's one from 5 years ago.

Wow, this movie. Completely forgot about it. Definitely have to watch it again.

Gods Must Be Crazy is one of the few films I've gone out of my way to watch more than once, so that's a recommendation in and of itself. Even more impressive, given its high general acclaim and solid reception, is that it's a South African film, with a South African director and cast, financed only by local sources.
Though it (and its 1980 release date) also really highlights the fact that there are so few internationally notable films that have come out of South Africa- other than District 9 and Invictus, both in 2009, nothing else really comes to mind. [This is of course ignoring films which only filmed in South Africa, but didn't involve the South African film industry, writers, or directors, like Hotel Rwanda].
Side note, I could never find The Gods Must Be Crazy 2 on VHS/DVD, and never got around to tracking it down online.
I should see if I can manage to do that, soon. ..Maybe after a fresh rewatch of TGMBC. It's about that time, again. ^.^

It's lacking off so many things from today's film industry and even of its time's standards but perhaps that's the thing that make the movie so unique. And I love how the presentation was like a documentary.
I believe the second movie is more famous than the first, maybe you can find it on Amazon or something, if you can find it locally accessable it maybe worth to try, though could be not cheap. Also you can find the original soundtrack on Discogs as vinyl I guess. :)
Hotel Rwanda is another watch-worthy movie. (This one is for OP.)
I watched it again a couple of years ago so I should wait for it to be more faded away from my memory before I watch it again. ^^

Now I'm confused.

Sorry-- I added emphasis to clarify my confusion. I should not have been so opaque, especially with what appeared to be a simple mis-typing.

I dont watch old movies much. Usually 90's is as old as I go for movies..
But I do remember watching Predator a lot. My cousin and I used to watch it several times a day as we had VHS for it. One of my childhood memories I still have remaining
There are definitely numerous classics that are considered works of art worldwide and I would just be repeating 90% of people here if I would start listing all the movies I find good... But Predator is the one that has the most nostalgic feel to it for me

One of my absolute favorites, and still the best in its [extremely niche] genre. Moreover, most of the others that have gone into the concept have been anime, like Gunslinger Girl, which further makes Léon stand out by way of its being live-action; Nevermind its top-tier core cast of Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and Natalie Portman (who displayed rather compelling acting skills in the film, despite it being her film debut and her only being 12~13 years of age at the time).

This was just on two nights ago after watching a show from a DVR, and I ended up watching about an hour of it. It's hard not to watch any of it. My wife can't believe how many quotes I know from it.

After rewatching some old movies this weekend I would like to ask: What is your favorite old movie? (1940's-2000) lets say.
One of my favorite movies growing up and that I rewatched was Stand By Me, with River Phoenix when he was a child. That movie is so real and brings out your emotions and keeps you gripped with happiness and sadness, and its just a roller coaster, but really holds a meaning to it. Another one of my favorites is The Naked Gun, a comedic detective spy movie that's always held a place in my heart. So the question stands, what is YOUR favorite old movie?
