What kind of RPG games do you prefer

I played those too, and if I like Shadowrun setting (I used to play the tabletop one) it was a bit harder for me to play the video games. Think i finished them though.

I don't have that flaw, but I have another one that's close. If other opinions are different from mine, I start to have doubts.
So I might play a game again if other people think it's fantastic.

It depends on what you like in games, like always.
It's the first game where I saw this kind of world and character building. Which was great. But also having walls of text was making my brain go into stand-by mode. I can read books just fine, but when I have long descriptions in game, I just mentally check out.
People say that turning on the narrator (which is done in nice, expressive voice) helped them to go through this game. But for me, it would just pad the game time. And it did take me nearly 40h to beat it.
When I started the game I was excited on how deep the RPG elements are, and was sure I will do second run. When I clocked around 30h I kind of wanted for it to be over already, and thought I was crazy to want to replay it 😅 I did give it 5 stars in review, but I know it was one-time adventure for me.

That was also very wordy and great world bulilding, and has hovered near the top of best RPG lists since it was released. It’s still one of the most innovative and creative and literary RPGs you’ll ever play, and it’s fun.

I did beat it, and I have the same thoughts as about Disco Elysium. A wonderful RPG with world building and lore. But (even in enhanced edition) game mechanics are just ugh. And this combat. I was glad when I could run away from it 😂

Alan Wake 2 is not for me. I'm terrified in horror games (unless this is very minor or psychological)
The sinking city and Call of Ctulhu seem more interesting as I've played the pen and paper before. But I wondered a bit about their quality.
I'm very fond of crime or detective stories. I have tried an old SH game (the testament of Sherlock holmes ) that was okayish. I also have The Devil's daughter and this one seems to be better!

Gotta be a bit basic but The Elder scrolls series is a good pick if you hadn't tried yet (I only played Oblivion and Skyrim, while recently got into ESO). Kingdom Come Deliverance could also be good if you like a more slow and somewhat realistic medieval RPG(plus we are getting a sequel this year) Maybe the Gothic Series too(Tho I haven't tried them and I'm ashamed to say this)

regarding the Elder Scrolls, i'm in since Arena. But I love them as much as i hate them, because you can do nearly anything you want in these games, but i still find them empty (I'm not asking a theme park Ubisoft like game, but still)
Kingdom Come was very good (and tough) Didn't know for the sequel, good thing as this is really a unique take for rpgs.
Gothic is very good indeed, but if you haven't played them before, i'd suggest to wait for the remaster!

I played it for hundreds of hours and without the dlc's and always found something new... didnt even play the main quest at all. I mean idk what kind of expectations you have ^^
I feel like there are millions of side quests and a lot of hidden stuff.
For me easy peasy one of my fav games!
And playing on hard difficulties you can get even one-shoted if you like a challenge (i like it on the highest)

I know this may sound weird, but I always have the feeling that Elder Scroll"s worlds were soulless . Maybe saying it was empty is not totally accurate. But all the time i just walked between towns , i always felt the same way: world feels empty, soulless, artificial. Maybe it's just me.
This said, i played them all, and i found some good things within every one of them (Oblivion aside)

I mean i kinda get it i guess, but it depend what you want from the game i guess. For me it was what i wanted back then.
I just enjoyed it so much that i could basically whatever i wanted and just create my own adventure (thats why i didnt even play the main quest)
Unfortunately i cant help you with RPG's cuz im not playing them too often (and nowdays im kinda addicted to jigsaw puzzles anyway lol) , but if you like something with a good story for example i would highly recommend The Last of Us :)

It's totally fine, and I know i can be a pain sometimes, with some weird ideas of mine.
The last of us looks like a game i could love indeed, as the story seems to take a huge part in it. What prevented me to get it so far was the infected/zombies . i'm kinda tired to see zombies everywhere (and RPgs unfortunately don't avoid this point)
But still the story seems to be very good, so I think I will take the plunge one day

I would highly recommend it. Yeah there are Zombies (im a zombie fan so i dont mind at all) but you also have parts without them and just bandits. The gameplay is smooth etc, the fighting mechanics have a lot of variety and storywise i would say that its easily in my Top3 of all time. Even had tears in my eyes which doesnt happen too often in gaming.

I heard good things about Chained Echoes but have not played it yet.
I enjoyed Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2 (still have to finish the 2nd) and are enjoying Baldur's Gate 3 with friends from my pen & paper days right now on gog.
Edit: Not to forget about Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch, heard recommendations about that one too, but you already found the giveaway.
Edit 2: If you count it as RPG in your book: Gloomhaven. I played the boardgame for quite a while and I am playing Forsthaven right now, both are great, but I have not given the PC game a shot yet.

Larian games, unfortunately are not for me. I admit these are good games, but something irks me in them. Probably the writing, that i find off (but it's probably a me problem)
Ni no Kuni is really interesting indeed. This looks like a Ghibli movie rpg , and I can't resist this and enter all GAs i can find for both of them.;
I've already tried Gloomheaven and this has not really worked. I also used to play the boardgame, and the feelings are not the same on pc. But many seem to like it, so once again, probably more a me issue :)

BoF 1 and 2 were on SNES, 3 and 4 were PSX, and most people don't even want to discuss the bastardized spinoff known as Dragon Quarter. 3 is arguably the best of the series with 4 a close second. Not to say 1 and 2 were bad (aside from the dragon system in 2 being utter shit), it's just that 3 and 4 were so much better.
Also for SNES I highly recommend Cyber Knight and Cyber Knight 2.
There are just so many good RPGs on the 16 bit consoles that you can emulate, with some notably good ones on the Sega Genesis like Phantasy Star 2 and 4. PS3 was.....very different, and a lot of people didn't like it because of how infuriatingly difficult it could be. There are remakes of PS1 and 2 on Playstation 2. If you like oldschool isometric D&D based RPGs you should check out Warriors of the Eternal Sun.
If you like SRPGs I highly recommend Master of Monsters for Sega Genesis, even though there is no storyline to speak of it's still fun, and it also had a reboot on Playstation. Dark Wizard on Sega CD is also a really good SRPG.
Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue are really good RPGs on Sega CD, they also had remakes on Playstation.
One of my favorite DS RPGs is Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled, it's very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger but it unfortunately has some pretty bad bugs and occasional crashes. Still worth playing though, you can get around the worst of it with save states on an emulator.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes just came out and it looks good. It's like a modern Suikoden and if you haven't played those games they are good and easy to emulate as they are console games.

I have both Tales, and i haven't played Berseria. But I did not like Zestiria, and that coincides with your advice. So I'm thinking of trying Berseria soon. I'll add that to my list.

Zestiria has too many bad design choices. Berseria on the other hand, keeps your interest high at almost every part of the game. Also its story is an emotional roller-coaster.
For Zwei, you can just go with the second game since it isn't directly related to the first one and the first game didn't age well.
Edit: Gotta mention SanctuaryRPG. Not a serious game but it's hell of a fun.

Tales of Zestiria sucks though
Oh thank goodness it wasn't just me. I felt so bad not liking it (especially the combat), especially since I liked the classic games, and had gotten Zestria as an SG win that I had entered for based on my liking of those games (ie, meaning I felt heavily obligated to play through it). But it just really never became fun to play.
I did pick up Berseria, but I'd been putting it off due to storage space limitations and residual "trauma" from Zestria, but I'll try and get to that sooner now, thanks to your sympathetic vote of confidence towards it. ^.^

I really cannot believe it stays at very positive. The devs poured all the budget into the intro. I just wish rest of the game was like that. I didn't even care for big and empty maps but the gameplay is so dull, it never gets fun. Also there are never-ending forced tutorials. Well, at least they learned what's bad and made a great game like Berseria afterwards.

Well you can think of Berseria as the first chapter and Zestiria as the second chapter... Since some characters and settings are shared, I think there would be room for a final game with characters from both games. I understand it would be difficult because of the temporal lapse. So I think you meant something like a Glenwood trilogy. That would be nice but it would highly unlikely be a continuation to Berseria.
I mean. yeah I would love to see more Berseria character interactions but I don't think they would be in the third game if they ever make it.

How do you feel about text-based games? I love Roadwarden and Citizen Sleeper for the writing and the sense of exploration, plus how many different, branching choices you can make. The Sunless Sea/Skies series is nice in its way as well, although I prefer having one continuous narrative rather than starting over again and again.
Another, much more tentative recommendation is Book of Travels. It's a love-it-or-hate-it experience and will probably be in early access forever, but I always enjoy dipping into it for a bit.

I managed to crash around, barely-washed, so damagingly in the first game I played of Roadwarden that I more or less managed to destroy the entire continent in the ending. A degree of failure that other players I spoke to were not actually aware was possible.

Square-Enix is having a sale, so I can even more emphatically recommend to you Dragon Quest XI, Triangle Strategy, and Live A Live. Also Dragon Quest Builders 2, even if it's not really that RPG-ish.
But if you want a dang good indie Paper Mario, play Bug Fables!

These should not have been mentioned before and cut more of the classic western RPG mentality with lot of choices, easily screwing up your build if not paying attention :P
- Underrail: Very intriguing lore but also very difficult. In an evil work of art, has lore pieces and small extra areas hidden behind the highest difficulty in the game which is basically iron man. In a game where every mistake can kill you.
- Realms of Arkania: Remake of the first DSA adventure with really good mechanics, though some lackluster graphics here and there and some weird gameplay mix. But the mechanics are really good IF you understand them. Having played the Pen&Paper version before, helps a lot.
- Wasteland 2: And probably 3 as well. Some nice setting and lots of decisions to make. Though not as good as the other two in my opinion.
And here just for entertainment, the probably quickest RPG you can ever play:
- Half Minute Hero: 30 seconds before the world is doomed. In each level. Are you fast enough? More of a puzzle game actually.

I tried underrail, and found it very deep but too difficult, so I let id off in the end. A shame as it seems very complete and many people around me are singing its praises
I missed Realms of Arkania, and it seems to be exactly what I'm into. Looks like the remakes of the classical ones were not up to the task?
I love what Inxile studio does usually so I loved Wasteland 2 (and 3, a bit less)

I'm not sure if the remakes weren't up to the task. I mean nostalgia fans are disappointed with pretty much anything. Outside of this, the game had a lot of issues in the beginning. Several bugs, lackluster english voice acting, the infamous "ugly" battle avatars .... There is also the unusual gameplay. Like dungeons and towns are 3d areas, you can navigate (though only flat surfaces), the inside of the buildings/shops are basically just descriptions/dialogue with maybe a single image. And the travelling is just a map where you see your movement and how long it takes to reach your destination. And inbetween - both for the 3d areas as well as the map - you are confronted with events which force you to react. It is very unusual to something the people are used to.
In addition to that, the game comes from an era where trial&error was more accepted. Today, games are more catered towards forgiveness. The DSA adventures are complex. If you go as far and activate the survival elements (which you should because it is fun), you have to manage your food, water, health, equipment for the winter and your weight (although I think the latter is always the case). So if you want to succeed you have to manage a lot of things and you have to decide very early on (like during character creation) what roles you need to fill. You have six slots and you probably need two front fighters at least, someone who can hunt, someone who can collect herbs, someone who knows medicine, at least some magic, maybe some street smarts. And you need to level up respectively, a single "hero" can't do everything alone. And the first game has levels from 1 to 6(?) I think? So, you don't level up much. In comparison to other games, your heroes are very human anyway. Some dumb mistake, some tough luck and you are in for a bad time. I had one time to reload a save from two hours ago (which I luckily had) in the last town before I decided to take the mountain pass. As that decision killed my group. It is a great game if you can get over the graphics and some development oversights. But you need to know what you do.
Underrail is similar in its unforgiveness towards the player. Here as well, you need to decide early on what kind of build you actually want to have. You can't do everything. And mistakes can kill you quickly. And even with a halfway working build I had a hard time against the final boss. And I think I only played on normal. But the story is interesting although it throws a lot of lore at you.

Regarding nostalgia fans, I can't blame people, I do the same thing (I didn't like Baldur's Gate 3 probably because of this.
But I'm totally in line with you, old games were not so forgiving as they are now (which is , in my opinion both a good thing and a bad thing)
But I'm not against trying something a bit different so I'll keep Realms of Arkania in mind.

The FF games are aimed at mid teens.
Earthbound is good on any level. The did things in that game that I didn't know were possible on the SNES.

That's possible indeed. I played FFVII when it was released on pc at the end of the nineties and. And while I loved it, I clearly felt I was not really the target audience :D
I saw that Earthbound was maybe available on Switch, so I'll try here (or try my luck with an emulator)

Fallout 1 and 2 are great.
Exp based level gain.
All turn based tactical combat.

In a world filled with yawning chasms and towering buildings, there exists a hidden 7th sense, a Illuminating force that guides the lost, and a Flame that burns eternal in the hearts of adventurers.
So, as the title says, i need to find a new rpg to play , as this is my favorite genre.
I've tried a lot these days , but most were not really satisfying apart from Sovereign Syndicate, which is nice, I'll have to try it again one of these days..

Any other advice? I love story more than gameplay (but a good gameplay is nice too), and I'm fond more of medieval environments than modern ones (some exceptions with Arcanum and VTM Bloodlines).
I've received so much advice that I think I should be good for months now. Between my backlog and new candidates, my quest for RPG has gone further.
Let me show my gratitude by throwing a little something (for european fellows only sorry, but I'll find something else for others.)
