Adult themes (language, sex, violence) won't necessarily make gameplay better or worse, but it can make the game more realistic. I had been playing BF3 for ages and hadn't even noticed the swearing until it was pointed out to me when I was showing someone the game. It had just been so natural, such a good fit, that it hadn't even registered.

strong language and sexual themes may make the game better or worse. for me it all depends on the game. i belive games have 3 major points. gameplay,graphics(art/design) and atmosphere. the first 2 are normally not affected by strong language or sexual themes but the atmosphere is the ability to make the game seem real. look at LA noir for example, some crimes are horrible but that shock works for the atmosphere of the game.

I think that if executed properly, they can add to a games overall "feel", however at times it can just be out of place and awkward.

Strong language and sexual themes are powerful tools, but not anything more. Used properly it can give deapth and a sense of reality to whatever media. If anyone have played Visual Novel games, you may know what I am talking about. Some great ones would simply not be as great if they lost the sexual aspect of it. Reason being that it gives a whole new level of immersion and deapth to the game. I want to use Wanko to Kurasou as an example. The first half of the game is spent becomming comfortable with eachother and growing fond of eachother. Then, two of the characters end up in bed and through that act they realize several aspects of themselves, they remove some walls while building others. Unfortunatly, as the story progresses I started to feel that they slipped into the trap of having sexual scenes just for the scenes themselves. Also, sexuality does not mean just sex and sexual contact, but also what defines the character. For example, one that is attracted to a male, but was raised to dispise homosexual people.

I've been gaming about as long as you it seems. Watched a lot of changes and non-changes in the gaming industry.
For me... it's about the quality of the game. I don't care if a game has violence or swearing or sexual content as long as it's a part of the game. It's the same way I feel about any media though (movies, books, etc.).
I would say if they added a lot of swearing and sexual content to, say, portal... it wouldn't fit and it would detract from the game as a whole.
While playing mass effect 1 though, I would say the sexual themes actually added an interesting dimension to the game.
Duke3D wouldn't have been duke without the strippers and swearing.
On the other hand, I felt pulled out of the action in Bulletstorm because of the ridiculous swearing in it.
It's a matter of it being a part of the game rather than just gratuitous.

Strong language? Only if it's fitting like you outlined in the example using war games. Sexual themes? Same thing, it's okay if it's done seriously, perhaps, usually I think it's done (obv) because they're just marketing towards a crowd that wants sex and blood, so in most cases, no it does not. It's done alright in Mass Effect, and from what I hear Catherine is quite good.
A more general response to your question though, is no, it does not make better games :P

When it is done properly, I like it and yes, it makes the game better. Mass Effect, The Witcher.
Great example might be Prey and Bulletstorm. In Prey it was pathetic and drag the whole game, among other things, down. On the other hand, I find it done very well in Bullestorm.

The games I play don't usually have either of these, though I did just buy DNF which might have a bit of these, so I suspect it won't really. I don't believe it has a sexual theme, and from what I've read its language isn't that strong.
I think that sexual themes are mostly beneficial, because they are a step up from simple titillation, which is how games have traditionally used sex.

Depends on the type of game. A hardcore FPS with no gore is kinda boring. Versus a RTS that is PG13 is fine.

All the driver's cab swearing in Train Simulator 2012 might be realistic, but it really gets on my tits.
I just want to trundle my way to Didcot in relative peace and quiet, taking in the scenery, not be aurally assaulted by some foul-mouthed Englishman with an eight word vocabulary and the disposition of a cranky two-year old at half-past nap-time.

No, but a properly used strong language can enhance some situations for more emotiannoly charges scenes. As for sexual themes, I don't find it necessary for a good game, especially if they are made in a way that breaks the game's flow.

Hm, just a byproduct of a person getting to sleep late and waking up too soon with a touch of the usual no rereading posts.

Strong language isnt too bad, if it's used right. Heavy use of strong language, ie. Call of Juarez Cartel, just makes the game ridiculous and cringe inducing. It also doesn't help if the game is riddled with bugs and is overall just plain crap.

Most of the people just want "panem et circenses" and nothing more. And those how give us entertainment: shows, TV, games, etc. Thet do know this principle. Before, games were something young and not such involved in "buisness". Now it is a buisness. Blood, gore, sexual scenes, violence - best product which is = income.
And does it make games better? I think not.

I'm an old time gamer. Probably gamed longer than almost anyone there. My gaming experience started with Zork 1 on the original IMB PC XT back in 1980 or '81. Anyway, over the years more and more strong language and sexual themes are being included in games ratings. Although I'm against both of them, my question isn't about the morals of them.
My question is, does strong language and/or sexual themes make better games? I contend they don't. I contend this point of view on movies, TV shows, comics etc.
I guess you can argue that for a war type game that strong language is fitting and representative of real life. But does it make a BETTER GAME?
I'm very interested in your opinion and point of view. Thanks for your replies.
