WarZ!
...no, just trolling ^^
If you have no problem with older graphics and can persuade some friends, I would recommend Thievery UT. It's a mod for UT99, but very different. You can play it singleplayer, coop and teambased. I've played it coop with 1-2 friends and it's real fun. When I tried it teambased (might be dead), I had no chance against all the oldtimers.

It still isn't not underrated, it's just old. :p
If it was underrated, most people would have thought: it aint great. No one will ever say ET wasn't a great game, everyone knew how great it was (excluding the people that werent born yet and only know CoD and think it's normal to pay 15$ for 4 shitty maps) :P
I do agree: CoD and BF3 are crap but not because it's not because of the "modern" setting. More because of the consoleport feel and no modtools (and CoD because of all the Copy paste, each year again, atleast BF3 had a new engine, but it had shitty CoD maps lol)

Gotham City Impostors but it aint indie and it barely works :p
The game had shitload of potential (and i had +500 hours of fun) but Monolith NEVER gave any support. Then they tried to do a last "cashin" making it F2P and steamworks, yet it even worked worse and had loads of "GFWL" errors even tho it was Steamworks now :p
Aka: amazing game ruined because they never tried to fix a thing. You could give it a try, it's still F2P on Steam (if it still has any players), but matchmaking is terrible (TDM works best). Once you are in a good game it's fun like hell though.

Warsow.
Best game ever. It's quake with 10x better graphics, online, amazingly fast. I'm getting 130fps on Warsow and only 30 fps on Minecraft with everything turned off and optifine.
Except, it has a very small user base... Everyone join. It's free, and cross platform.

This. There's Xonotic as well, but it isn't exactly as "finished" as Warsow. It's IIRC at version 0.6 or something, while Warsow went gold last year. Still, be sure to check at least some gameplay vids.
People were telling Red Orchestra and NeoTokyo.
YES, play those too.

Bioshock 2 has fun multiplayer but I know many people disagree.

Terraria is pretty populated but it's pretty famous tho..Magicka is funny as hell, and there are loads of servers, too bad it's pretty buggy and the most you can do is versus,or be ready to restart the game every two levels :/
Trine 2 is pretty awesome with 3 friends.
Dungeon defenders is awesome too.
Forge is pretty good if you love pvp.
That's all the indie games i know and played, some are pretty popular some are less, but pretty much all have decent amount of players.
Dunno :D

Magicka is really only good because its fun to play with friends. Playing it by yourself is awful.

Don't put too much time into Dungeon Defenders unless you're willing to play for 16+ hours straight, and if you go afk, you get disconnected. They really need to add a way to save your progress. Until then, I'm never touching the game again.

I love indie games, but I feel that I'm missing out on the whole reason for gaming online.
What are some less known, yet populated multiplayer games?
