Don't question the title.

Hey! So I haven't created a thread in what feels like years. And now that I'm quarantined and bored as shit, nows a good a time as any :D

I have twooo giveaways to giveaway here (and a third in the near future from votes, that'll also be WL-gated) (personally my vote is for Hotel Sowls, and NOT JUST BECAUSE ITD SAVE ME MONEY,, ok maybe a bit, but seriously watch that trailer look how weird and cute it is?? the vibes??), the theme for which are that theyre amazing-looking indie games that havent been given away here on SG yet. one is open to all over level 3, and the other behind a whitelist gate. Since I thought it worked really well in my last thread, I'm going to do the same thing here

To get into my super exclusive cool kids club whitelist, all you have to do is give someone a compliment on this thread. Try find something you can genuinely compliment on/something you find great about them. It can be anything from their steam profile, to their avatar, to their presence here, whatever. And I'll add you. :)

OR

Mention a forum user you are grateful for! (for anything as well, maybe a game you won from them and really liked, or a comment they left, the threads they make, their general presence... etc). That'd be great too

If you took part in the last one, and want to show appreciation to the same person, or can't think of another right now, feel free to do just that. :)

Oh! And you have to have said your thank yous in past won giveaways as well!
Not ALL--because some are said through steam I understand, and sometimes its just late, your tired and/or feeling negative, and you forget.... But I want to make sure there are a few. Because saying thank you is always the bare minimum one can do, right?

disclaimer:your whitelist may not remain after the giveaways end depending on how many enter, since I like to try keeping it somewhat small, and somehow I've gathered 239 people (really not small) on it already apparently (too many kind and great people here on SG).. So please dont do any whitelist for whitelist stuff, and hate me if you find I then cut you out after :(

Also, here's a few random (totally objectively) amazing-looking and aesthetically pleasing upcoming indie games that may or may not interest you, that I've found stalking the steam upcoming tab over the years:

And on another unrelated note, has anyone got any recommendations for Ghibli-inspired games (other than Ni No Kuni)? If not in art style, games that invoke that same sense of breezy, soft, subtly magical, innocent, young and unhurried adventure as their films do. That invoke for you the same magical feelings as these tracks...

I'd like to compliment Kappaking because everything he writes makes me feel happy. And another shoutout to rapsodelopront for being a great person and also gifting me Crypt of the Necrodancer which became one of my favourite games

There are so many people here I would like to show appreciation. I love Kappaking's threads and how cheerful they are, Lugum's informative/music threads are always pleasant to visit too. Buszmen201 also created an amazing thread for free online courses. This kind of stuff is hard to keep updated everyday, but he's doing an excellent work!

I would also like to dedicate this post for starporcasa because his daily jigidis have been helping me a lot through these tough times. They have become less about the games and more about that daily pastime.

Cool thread.

There are lots of users I could thank so instead of doing that and leaving out people I would like to thank all current and former support members. I always feel guilty when I have to reroll a winner from a giveaway because they own the game yet anytime I have requested a reroll it gets done and any interaction I have had with them is friendly.

I'd like to thank thank the support team here, in particular Khalaq for giving me a temporary suspension the level-headed support they provide, even when people lose the plot. I'm not a nice person a lot of the time, and sometimes I just need to shut up.
Apologies to all those I've been a bitch to in the past, and thank you to those who manage to tolerate me, as I know there are a good amount who don't, for good reason.

Take care everyone :)

There are many really generous people on here. I had a quick look but didn't see anyone mentioning stlpaul who is one of the most generous, but also post pictures of his cat. So my compliments to his cat for putting up with him, teehee.

Loved the recomendations of the games!!
One of the first games i played that give me a Ghibli vibe, was Okami in Ps2.

The songs you shared automatically take me to this β—˜Ori

Oooh, I got that game in the recent humble choice! What would you say was "Ghibli" about it if you can narrow it down at all? Or was it really just the general atmosphere/tone? It certainly has its own visual aesthetic haha. xd

And that song is very lovely thank you!

Okami's got themes about restoring nature and setting things back to the way they should be, which are very Ghibli. There's also the traditional Japanese vibe and folklore, in line with films like Princess Kaguya and My Neighbour Totoro, and the overall sense of wonder and connection you have when travelling, interacting with the many, many quirky characters and helping others out. Plus, ancient magic technology like Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa!

(It does have some mildly raunchy jokes that would never make it into a Ghibli film, though.)

I really enjoy watching Princess Kaguya! I admit I was hoping they could win the Oscar in animation !

Same! I've got this whole rant about how badly handled the Oscar for animation is. It's obvious most of them don't bother to watch the films, so they just give it to whichever Disney film is there. >.>

Don't you know??? Animation is just for kids anyway :)) "I have no interest in them whatsoever. That ended when I was 6. My son dragged me to a few when he was 6; I would seat him and go outside and make phone calls." And who cares about those "freakin' Chinese fuckin' things" especially!! When you realize that The Wind Rises lost to Frozen, and Princess Kaguya lost to Big Hero Six...

Like my friend said, it's like if they'd put The Godfather up against Shrek, and Shrek won. It's not that Shrek is a bad film for what it is, but what the hell is wrong with you?

(And it's totally not limited to anime films, either. Ratatouille winning against Persepolis in 2007, oy vey.)

Well that all does sound extremely like Ghibli, you're right haha. I'll be making sure I play it before quarantine ends here then! Thank you. :)
And idkkk,,, I feel like there were maybe one or two subtly raunchy jokes in Porco Rosso.. Oh! And very definitely Pom Poko, at least visually.... Definitely visually.. So it should be fine for me, as I also loved those films as well.

  • PA (Mouse and samwise),
  • PaGYWoSG (still Mouse and samwise),
  • PM (Lilith),
  • PoP (LastM)
  • everyone who helps (in big ways or even just small) the cool peeps mentioned above
  • everyone who does GAs for the above groups and in doing so, the games given away can find loving homes

Uhm, tough one... I appreciate many people in this forum, people I've met over the months. While there are others who might have more attention or deserve more words, I'd like to mention Lugum. He (he?) was the first person I noticed in this site that created fun events to participate and get into invite-only GAs. So yes doing that is cool. Giving games and fun to people shows generosity and a kind soul. But the important thing here is the kind soul. With the actually not so many words and messages we've crossed, Lugum showed he's a caring person, intelligent, pays attention to details, and always has kind words. Lugum was also one of the first people I added to my whitelist. The last? Someone called Zaugr. Dunno much about such person, but my tarot reader says there's a blue heart deserving there.

They've already been mentioned quite a bit, but shoutout to MouseWithBeer and samwise84 for running the monthly "Play a Game You Won on Steamgifts" event, which is my personal favourite community event aside from the annual community train and advent calendar. They put an insane amount of work into it, and even pay for a dedicated website to make it fun and easy for all the participants. Wonderful folks.

And this is such a lovely thread! Beautiful hidden indie gems and Ghibli, are you sure you aren't me? I had a lot of these followed/wishlisted (including Hotel Sowls!), but there were still some amazing stuff I hadn't heard of. A Space for the Unbound looks especially rad. (And has those Ghibli vibes, too.) Please make another rec thread like this sometime, you have fantastic taste.

A lot of folks have already mentioned the most obvious Ghibli-esque games, like Forgotton Anne, but I'll give it a whirl. I haven't actually found any games that compare to a Ghibli film, because that's a special type of magic, but here are some that sort of fit.

ICO This is the closest I've had to a Ghibli experience in game format, I think, which is also why it's my favourite game. The protagonists, a strange, beautiful girl in a cage and the young horned boy who's desperate to protect her, could've been lifted right out of a Ghibli film, down to their innocent, trusting relationship and the way they rely on each other without question. It's all very Castle in the Sky, except the castle is on a remote island and controlled by an evil witch.

Orisinal Games Bite-sized flash games with lovely soundtracks and art that invoke a little of that innocent feeling. Especially recommend The Way Home, Pocketful of Stars (yes, that's where my handle came from), Carrot Track, Winterbells, A Dog for All Seasons, The Bottom of the Sea...okay, a lot of them.

Gorogoa The general wondering, contemplative atmosphere in this one, plus the utterly incredible, vaguely Middle Eastern art.

Marvin's Mittens I know, this game doesn't look like much. But if you want a "breezy, soft, subtly magical, innocent, young and unhurried adventure," it absolutely fits the bill. One of the most wholesome and charming games on Steam, in my opinion.

The Sea Will Claim Everything I make a point of recommending this in response to just about every request, because it is one of my favourite games and direly underappreciated, but it is an overall good fit here. TSWCE has a slow, leisurely sense of time, an incredible sense of place (it really does feel like a portal into a whole other world), talking animals, and a playful sense of humour. And underneath it all, a quiet, lingering anger and mournfulness at the wrongs that have been done to undermine the residents' kind and enduring way of life. (An essential element of many of the more mature Ghiblis that tends to get overlooked.)

Anyways, I'm going to keep an eye on this thread and just bask in the positivity for a while.

Ahhh, so many great recommendations thank you! I'll make sure to try some of those Orisinal Games you recommended in the next few days, they seem really cute and relaxing. And I had Marvin's Mittens wishlisted, and keep seeing giveaways for it, but I don't think I ever actually checked it out much past that initial quick browse. But that store trailer for it was actually pretty great, so will definitely be keeping an extra eye out for it. :)

On ICO - I remember reading about this game awhile ago (maybe when that HD remaster was announced?) and it did seem really up my alley at the time, but I think it must have somehow slipped by me as time passed. That description you gave sounds amazing though. It sounds VERY much like Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea. Maybe a mix of that and CitS? And the soundtrack in that trailer!! Definitely Ghibli feels. Now just to get my hands on a playstation... Would you recommend the original or the remaster? I ask because I vaguelly remember people saying the companion HD remaster of Shadow of Colossus lacked some of the original's soul??

The Sea Will Claim Everything - yess, a game I actually already own!! Consider it installed and on the to-play list. I have a loooot of games I need to play so I don't know when it'll be, but I really like your recommendation for it, so I'll be sure to give it a shot at some point. :) Pretty sure I was talking to someone else not too long ago that recommended this game as well. And I am very big sucker for super obscure, possible hidden gems like this haha.

For ICO I recommend the remaster, without question! It doesn't have the frame rate issues of the original, and there are a few bonus unlockable features. That's the one I linked you to the trailer for, actually, and as you can tell, it mostly just updated the textures. They even have the same janky walking animation for the villagers in the intro cutscene. >.>

TBH, I've only replayed the version of Shadow of Colossus that accompanied it. I think people were upset about some specific things (like the way the arches' shadows hit the dunes?), but I found it perfectly lovely and mysterious, though it didn't grab me like ICO. It's also not the same as the newest remaster of Shadow of Colossus, which to be honest I've avoided playing because the screenshots and gifs I saw just didn't invoke the same feeling.

Also, I noticed you didn't respond to Gorogoa (which could be for any reason, including the fact you probs knew about it already!), but if you haven't given it a whirl yet, I'd put that second on the list above in terms of "Ghibli-ness," and really do recommend giving it a look if it seems even remotely like something you'd enjoy
