like you couldn't run it or it didn't work or something like that

Assassin's Creed. Oddly enough, my graphics card was fine, but the CPU just couldn't handle it.

Civilization IV was close. My desktop's Intel integrated card could run it, but the endgame was so slow that it took a half hour to load between turns. Ended up buying a new graphics card to play it.

when i first got civ v i could barely run it at full resolution even with most of the graphics settings cranked way down. of course now everything's maxed and it does fine since i got a new graphics card (and then new cpu / motherboard / ram)

Far Cry, Crysis, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, GTA IV, and more. Varying systems of course.

Also happens to be the reason why I play my console so much more

Renegade Ops. Turns out it doesn't run on XP. It's rather annoying that only some of the XP-incompatible games have a warning on their store page. I bugged support about it, but they only put a warning on Renegade Ops's page. For other games, like Quantum Conundrum, DiRT Showdown, Krater and SoaSE: Rebellion, you have to carefully check the system requirements to see that they don't run on XP.

Now, if there was no warning message at all, it would be fine, as people would always check the requirements. But with messages like this and this, it's easy to presume that any XP-incompatible game would have a similar message. Wrong.

Alan Wake, Gotham City Impostors, and Mass Effect 1&2
Mass Effect runs, but it loses all texture and makes shepard's face look like a blob of clay

Amnesia. It runs, just painfully choppy and bad frame rate. Even at lowest settings possible.

The Batmans, Black Ops, Rage, The Witcher 2, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Battlefield: BC2, Blades of Time, Dead Space 1+2, Far Cry 2, Gothic 3 + FG, Hard Reset, Hydrophobia, Krater, LA Noire, Mirror's Edge, Payday the Heist, Sonic Generations, Total War: Shogun 2, yep that's about it for games that lagged/couldn't play. But I can run everything now, just had to upgrade my machine =)

quite a few, but more to weird technical issues, e.g.:
dead space (cam keeps spinning, maybe I should retry at some point)
borderlands (ok, it runs, but it crashes regularly on map change -> very annoying)
deus ex (not HR, the old one - runs way too fast for me so not really playable)
chronicles of riddick: assault on dark athena (yay to awful DRM, I don't have an optical drive in this box, so I'd have to crack it to get it to work doh - also the DRM driver that comes with it is even incompatible with win7 (and a pain to remove))

that's the most annoying ones, but many games also didn't run out of the box, i.e. needed some kind of manual post-install intervention to work :x

my laptop can't run most of my games, but i usually play on my desktop so no big deal ;) my htpc could probably run most of them but it has a tiny keyboard with a built in trackball so not that good for gaming.

Minecraft, i no it sounds silly but i bought it thinking i could run it and i only got 2 frames a second on my laptop. now that i have a gaming pc its runs with over 500 fps. and i can run everything else to on ultra besides metro 2033 it tends to get a bit choppy on ultra after a bout half an hour game time.
