"Someone's being mean to me on the internet!" =/= Trolling

Stop this nonsense. Seriously.

I presume this is about Tzell's now-closed thread and the chaos spawned from that?

Yep. It's bad enough tumblr and co. have beaten memes to death, we don't need an army of 12 year olds spouting 'OMFG U TROL U DON EVEN KNO ME OK!!!11".

Edit: My bad, that already happened a while ago.

Double edit: And while we're on this topic, Prank/Joke= Trolling. I feel like I've died a little inside when someone uses it in that context.

So you used to like tumblr, but then you took an arrow in the knee? :P

Seriously, though, I think this thread is either going to get ignored or become a breeding ground for the trouble to start again. Thanks for trying to be a peaceful voice during it all, even if late, but I don't think it's worth the trouble. I doubt anyone's learnt anything from all of that anyway. Another thread is just going to stir it up again, I think.

Ugh dear god, don't even get me started on that joke.

Since a large amount of people here are or used to be from /v/, most of us know what trolling actually is. The meaning is getting really distorted lately though, mostly due to reddit, tumblr etc.
And to clarify, I never liked tumblr. Some of the blogs are okay, but most of them are 'lol we're so hipsterrrr and nerdyyy!'.

I'll admit, I do say those jokes, but only when they're actually relevant and, more importantly, funny. I don't like forced memes any more than you do (that "I didn't ask for this" thing from Deus Ex is a perfect example of a meme that makes me want to deck whoever started that shit).

While I agree some of them are quite witty, taking a sentence and slapping "LOL THEN ARROW TO THE KNEE HAPPENED" is not exactly funny.

And I think /v/ would to be to blame for that. It's been quite horrid in the past year or so.

I'll admit, I never went to /v/ all that much, not unless I heard something interesting was going on there or I was bored on the other boards. I've heard the same thing about it sucking quite a lot lately, which makes me sad. I'm more of an advanced summerfriend on /b/ and an oldfriend on... well, wouldn't you like to know? (answer: no, you really don't give a shit probably)

Yep. I just spend most of my days crawling through /a/. It's slowly heading in the same direction as /v/, but there are a lot of people who can still recall old etiquette. I found it hilarious when the mods deleted a thread about how bad /a/ is and that we need to fix it and left 4 trollbait threads open.

Anyway, when was the last time you heard "lurk more"? Brings back memories.

About a month ago, I think, though I haven't been paying attention much. I vaguely remember seeing it every hour on /b/ once.

I was mostly on /m/, /a/ and /b/, but mostly because I had nothing better to do. As for "I never asked for this" I find most Deus Ex memes fun to use in a serious style. Some of the threads that pop up here for instance. "I never asked for this" would imply that this thread needs to die.

Also, inb4 someone jumps on the fact that I popped in here to say this, and tells me to get out of this thread.

I ventured into the weird part of youtube without even spending an hour there. Thanks for that. It's funny how his face was on everyone BUT Goku.

Lately I've found these so called internet-adults who know and participated in the creation of all this internet slang even more annoying than the idiots who misuse it. The rants that start only because some guy does not understands the difference between "flaming" and "trolling" shouldn't matter at all, but god forbids you try to calm anyone down, because "internet is srs bsns".

Actually it does. Look at the above comments ranting about how people are misusing internet slang. And I have to agree that the people who complain about the misuse are almost as annoying as the people who use it incorrectly themselves.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone here. I'm just saying that people are butchering quite a lot of words.

Depends on what degree of "mean" we're talking about. The intent of a troll is to draw an emotional response from the trolled; usually resorting to cheap tricks.
