Different socket means they aren't compatible.

+1

For newer CPUs you should go with a LGA 1150 mainboard

No, you can't. Architecture isn't the same, and each pin works in a different way.

that mean nothing i can get more than 1 type of cpu socket on my motherboard, the only way to know if you can, it's to look on your motherboard book to know.

Intel's sockets are not backwards compatible. Different socket means no compatibility, that's pretty much their rule.

AMD is different - their sockets have some backwards compatibility.

Your processor though is an Ivy bridge chip, and your current motherboard will support up to an i7-3770k, though any i5- 3XXX should improve your performance leagues more than any dual core Pentium could- even overclocked. There is no sense getting a K seris processor as a board with a Pentium rarely supports overclocking

Save up 50-60 more dollars and get an i5, or look around for a used/refurb from a shop like amazon/newegg/bestbuy/tigerdirect and so on.

You can buy a good CPU for your socket, there are really good CPUs for it, like Intel Core i5-3340, i5-3570, i5-3570K, i7-3770 and i7-3770k

You need to buy at least an i5, buying another Pentium as you said in the thread, is a pointless upgrade, or at minimum get an i3.
