I have been using this setup for 7 years or so (upgraded GPU twice, doubled the memory, added SSD) and it has served me well. Even today it can still manage most games on medium-high (60 fps) on 1080p. I am probably gonna put together a new system (and get a new 1440p display) later this year though since the age of the CPU is finally starting to show. Just waiting for Ryzen 3 and potentially Navi to shake up the prices a little since I am not a big fan of what the market currently offers.

Currently this setup is plenty for my needs, not gonna upgrade anything anytime soon. I'm extremely satisfied with my trusty Dell IPS monitor even though is only 1080p@60hz, my headset is one of the best available under 100€ and the keyboard will last years. The 4790K is still a beast despite the years and pretty much everything but the unoptimized games run at 60 fps.

I wish I had known about PCPartpicker earlier! (This thread was the first time I'd heard of it for serious PC building.) I built my machine the old-fashioned way: googling for reviews, then piecing parts together (and only found out near the very end, when my graphics card finally arrived, that it partially obstructed some of my drive bays -- ugh!):

Part Item
CPU: Intel i7 3770k (3.5 GHz)
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus (this was after the stock cooler failed in only two months) w/ Arctic Silver thermal paste (a.k.a. "Elephant Snot")
Memory: 16 GB DDR3 (2x8)
MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V LE PLUS
OS / Current Games HD: SanDisk SSD PLUS (480 GB)
Internal HD: WD Caviar (2 TB, 7200 RPM)
External HD: WD Easystore (8 TB)
GFX Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (11 GB) <-- replaced a Sapphire Radeon card that bit the dust (the only graphics card I've ever had that has died on me)
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Z
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (650 W)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST DVD/CD Writer (for installing software & watching DVD's, though has a tendency to refuse to read lightly scratched up DVD's for some reason -- my beatup MacBook has zero problems playing those same DVD's)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 (ATX Mid Tower)
Monitor: Dell U2412M (I have the darnedest problems with games due to the widescreen format)
OS: Dual-boot Windows 7 Pro / Ubuntu

Definitely will be using PCPartPicker in the future for any PC building! When I entered all these parts into the website, it actually warns me ahead of time that the graphics card obstructs one or more drive bays, and that my case lacks USB 3.0 ports in the front (which I wish I had).

You can always add USB 3.0 extender from the mobo to the front panel as I did.

Omg, I <3 you! Never even knew there was such a thing as USB 3.0 extenders! (I'll be able to use that blocked drive bay for something really useful now, thanks! :)
