I backed up all my STALKER games this way on GOG some months ago. It worked totally fine back then.

Hmm..strange, does not work for me. I just have to copy the product key and paste it at https://www.gog.com/reclaim right? If I do that it says my product code is invalid.

It's meant for boxed versions. Steam versions should not work, but if you bought one of the games on Gamer's Gate it will, unless you only got a steam key. To my knowledge only Russia got a boxed release of Eador: Genesis.

I could not get it to work with the Mount & Blades though. And I can't seem to find a key for S.T.A.L.K.E.R:Shadow of Chernobyl

I was referring to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. For the other games, certain versions are needed but with the new connect feature I wouldn't b surprised if we can claim those down the line anyway.
As for SoC you have to install it. You can then find the key either in the menu/settings or the registry, I can't recall which.

Only retail keys should work for GOG, but because unused older keys were passed onto Steam, some people can activate their games on GOG. I was able to use two of the STALKER games myself, but not the third.

Go to www.GOG.com/connect after creating a GOG profile.
On the /connect page you can connect your GOG account with your Steam account. Thanks to Steam's open API (and your permission), GOG is able to mine our data from the Steam software libraries .
That same mined data will then be transferred to GOG's API, showing the games we love with enough to make it worth your while.
Why this is awesome:
GOG always sell their games on the old fashioned way (Good Old Games) as if they were selling physical copies. They put in a map of the game, unique starting gear, all the game music on mp3 etc....

They're announcing new game titles every week so I'm guessing they're non-DRM.
On the other hand, I find it way more entertaining to just not read it. Now I'm as a child before christmas wondering what kind of special editions I will get :$

Yeah, but this way you'll have it on another service as well, in case steam goes down. You also get a bunch of small goodies, like soundtracks, behind the scenes stuff or whatever else GOG is offering for the individual games (the list of goodies for The Witcher 1 & 2 is actually quite big). So there are plenty of advantages to doing it.
I only think you can backup The Wticher 1 & 2 on GOG if you have the steam versions, the other games require you to have a non-steam version.

Not sure if this applies to any of the games on offer here, but for many other (in particular older) games, the GOG version tend to run better than the ones found on Steam, as they do in-house testing and fixing, rather than just relying on the publisher doing their job.

Oh yeah, the really old titles. I love GOG for releasing those. I do have an account there.
I never cared for extra's though, soundtracks, artwork, ebooks. Never touched a single one of them

I rarely touch the extras as well, except I might look through the hintbooks that they sometimes include once I've beaten a game, as some old hintbooks could actually be quite nice. And there's been occasions where I've used game soundtracks as background music from things in the real world, so those are handy to have there "just in case".
Still, having a backup copy in case the steam servers are having issues (again!) is not a bad thing, when you really want to play a specific game.
