A cake has appeared next to my name and it's high time to tip the balance of W/S GAs so here I am with a short train with debatable quality games. In order to reserve your ticket I need to verify that you are a human or cat by answering the following questions:

  1. Do you like games?
  2. 6 faces and 21 eyes?
  3. Vampires have reflections in the mirrors??
  4. x is what the poor have and x is what the rich want from the poor?
  5. K?
  6. I have 6 daughters Each of my daughters has a brother. How many children do I have??
  7. How many legs does a spider have?
  8. seriously?

Are you cola? Are you disco? Are you sex? What are you, eh?

EDIT: Q2 refers to the permanent ones.

From which branch do you trace your royal lineage?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, on my father's side we had a Russian princess marry into our family generations ago so I technically do have royal blood. We even have a family crest and a royal seal along with some of her dowry and stuff she took along when she came to my ancestor's house somewhere xD
My family goes back a long, long way but (and I'm embarrassed to say) I have basically no knowledge about it as all our family histories are written in Cyrillic letters and I don't know how to read them 8used to know when I was a child but totally forgot). The only book I have in Latin writing is a cookbook for food that was served at feasts that someone took the time to translate xD

It's true but this is the webz so I don't mind you doubting it. I could have just as easily said that I'm a unicorn xD
Also, there's nothing mysterious about it, I'm just too lazy ( yeah, I know, shame on me) to learn those letters again and read it all since it has no effect on my life now xD

It is interesting what you find when you look into your family history, isn't it? Among the countless farmers and workers, going back to the 16th century, I actually have a common ancestor with the current king of Sweden (who either lived in current north-western Germany or Netherlands). Granted, that's really nothing special, considering how many branches probably sprouted from that family tree. (And apart from that, there is pretty much only one other thing of note that my family seem to have ever done, which can still be seen in my family name).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, it is very interesting; my family's lineage supposedly goes as far back as king David xD
A lot of the history is proven and has written accounts but some of it is speculation based on our last name and our tribe's migrations. I really should find out more about it but you know, life gets in the way and you always have better things to do than dig up old papers (and to access those you have to get the council's approval as the private church in which those are kept is locked and unavailable for entry as what's in those documents isn't all nice and to be proud of, from another country where those are kept, which I, as girl/woman can't really hope to get easily) and learn another writing system to be able to read it at all.
I am, currently (unless my uncle has children and it doesn't look like that's going to happen), the last descendant of my family's "Croatian lineage" and as I'm a girl my last name in Croatia dies with me.
Not a lot of happy campers about this fact, I can tell you that xD

I had a relative that did a lot of digging around church records back in the 90's, so a lot of my family history on my mothers side is more or less mapped out. Turns out that they liked to stay in one place and not do much most of the time (which I guess made researching it a lot easier). Sweden was the first country to have a mandatory civil registry, and even before that a lot of church records remain, so that also helped. Going further than the 14th century is sadly not possible though. The lack of records would indicate that people back then did not consider my ancestors very important.

I don't know how things work in Croatia, but would not a double name be an option for a child, in case you want to preserve the name? That's at least how my surname works (though it's due to me being a bastard, not because my parents wanted to preserve their names).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well that would be an option but it's not very common for a child to have two last names (you'd have to find a really really open-minded man to agree to that), it's only common for a woman to do that if she gets married after getting a doctoral degree as it's a grueling process to have your degree updated to your new last name so it's way more practical to hyphenate.
Also, I'm not even sure I want to have children (I'm leaning way more towards no than yes ) so they'll just have to deal with it xD

Is that not something that you should be willing to do for your partner though? If it's something really important to your partner, you should be willing to give up something for her/him to have it. (Or I'm just speaking from my own view of how I think the world "should" be, not how it actually is...)

Permalink

Of course I would never marry anyone who wouldn't be willing to give up something for something that's really important to me (like the child's last name); I agree with your opinion totally but I wasn't talking about myself, I was saying what's common in Croatia.
But, since that's not important to me, we'll never get to find out if (and that's a big if) I ever decide to take that step. xD

Well that's what I get for trying to be dry;I'll stick to being the unusually serious guy who quotes Shakespeare on a giveaway forum:P

It's great that you know so much about your family genealogy, especially having actual proof of ancestry. Such things can be powerful sources of identity. I know less than I'd like of my own family history since my paternal Polish/Russian grandfather's last name was changed when his family emigrated to America and no one seems to remember what it was, besides being long. About all I do know is that the suffix -ski in a lot of Polish names refers to the fact that they once owned land and were in fact nobility.

Apparently his family fled in the first place because they were considered "White Imperialist Russians" during the Russian Revolution of 1917 which might give further credence to this background. For my part, my own sociopolitical predilections would have put me firmly on the other side of that conflict ;).Sadly he died before I was ever born, and my Irish-born paternal grandmother passed before I was old enough to ask such questions.

" I have basically no knowledge about it as all our family histories are written in Cyrillic letters and I don't know how to read them 8used to know when I was a child but totally forgot). The only book I have in Latin writing is a cookbook for food that was served at feasts that someone took the time to translate xD" Not sure how easy it would be to find a translator but maybe that's an option?

This ended up so cool, learning more about other people's heritage :D

Oh it would be really easy to get it translated as most of the people over 50 years old remember it really well but the problem is, as I've said, the records are kept locked away and getting access to just read them is very difficult, getting permission to bring them out of the church is basically impossible and the idea of someone outside of the family being allowed to read them is just silly. That's what I've been told at least when I casually asked about it. But, who know, maybe some day I manage to get my uncle (who knows a lot more abut our history and maybe could get access to the records) to take me to see them and read them to me. :)

Well I'm glad something good came out of it:)

Yes that is a shame, I'm curious as to why the church (Orthodox or Catholic?) has that much control over family records in Croatia. I know that in many countries it's still the norm for churches to keep lists of the rolls from the centuries ago but I rather thought that was no longer true of more recent records.

I didn't mean the Church (capital C, Orthodox, Catholic,...) but a church as a building (small C, a building built by my family, it's a private church).
Also, it is not located in Croatia, my grandpa moved with his (first) wife here and I'm only the second generation of my family born here.

Oh so you did mean an actual church building as opposed to the entity.

I hope that someday you get your uncle to make the trip with you, seems like it might be a fascinating experience:)

In any event, yesterday was my cake day, so I started a last-minute GA for it:
