Another normal day for me... they deserve what they are "receiving" (compliments, gifs, whatever you think of) today every single day of their lifes.

Well... I guess that's nice... A great way to make women look weak by having the need to celebrate them just for existing. Men have a thing like that too, but no one celebrates it, which is good.

Literally every single woman that I talked to today saw it as a degrading mess. But doesn't matter to me, I'm not a woman.
(If anyone's interested, the main reason was that they wanted to earn a pat on the back, not just get it for literally no reason.)

Not saying that women don't rock. It's just that we already know it ;D

Well, I'm talking to you now, and I don't see how it is degrading or a mess, unless you choose to interpret it that way. Of course, I grew up in a country with it's own men's day (sometime in May, I think - the international one is in November), but not it's own women's day (at least not as widely "celebrated" as men's day). I didn't know this existed until a few years ago, but I've always known about men's day.

Other than that, the whole thing came about over a hundred years ago, and commemorates the movement for women's rights. I guess we shouldn't have days that commemorate important movements, then, according to all the women with whom you've had conversations today (minus me)? I don't think it's that important anymore either, and I don't get why people keep posting "congratulations" here, but "degrading" or a "mess" - why? I'm pretty sure nowadays it's just supposed to make people think about equality at least once a year, as well as women's achievements, at least that's how I see it. I don't expect congratulations for being me, or randomly being told I'm great because I'm a woman by people who don't even know me (that's super weird tbh).

disclaimer: I didn't read the whole wikipedia article and don't know much about this day in general, that's just what it means to me right now

"grew up in a country with it's own men's day (sometime in May, I think"

That's father's day, not men's day (though it's being called this way in some regions of Germany). Therefore it's more an equivalent to mother's day. And that's only the secular meaning, since its origin is Christian (Jesus' returning to God).

I don't know if this day really helps emancipation and equality, but it doesn't bother me. And I agree, congratulating any woman due to the day is actually weird.

Thank you for the great GA! :-)

Yeah, I just read about that being father's day - I grew up in a region where it's men's day, and I grew up with a single mom, never met my father, so the day was never of any significance to me. I just know men everywhere, fathers or not, have barbecues and get drunk that day, and the rest of the extra long weekend (and I know it's also a completely different holiday, which I mentioned in another reply in this thread earlier)
And again, that was to illustrate my view of this day, which is basically "growing up, I didn't know there was also a day just for women, men seemed more important" (in society/in general, I should add - I've personally never felt particularly disadvantaged due to my gender, but from tv etc. that's what it seemed like to me, and it's certainly changed over the years. I don't think having a day has anything to do with that, but it's not harmful either as long as it's not ascribed too much importance)

ETA: My original comment probably sounded a bit more as if I was living in some oppressive patriarchy than intended, I really just meant men get a special day, (now) women (not "just" mothers) get one as well (though the only signs of it here were a thing on Facebook and an "enjoy your day" mail from my financial advisor).

No problem, it wasn't meant to attack you, but to shed some light onto this.
And yeah, the holiday is (ab)used for barbecues and tours with handcarts, especcially by young men who aren't father yet (I had participated in that too, when I was younger, therefore I can't and don't want to blame anyone), so it might look like a "men's" day. But I've heard by several women that nowadays they're doing such tours on that day, too.

Good to hear that you've never felt disadvantaged and wishing you that it stays this way! :)

Edit: At the office I had an Outlook calendar entry for it, because someone from the union sent it to us. And our female team leader reminded us of the day in a probably jokingly meant, but somehow awkward situation. That felt a bit over the top. I wish she would instead try harder to find more female applicants for our team (the ratio is 1:18 currently and from my experience mixed teams provide a better atmosphere).
