Tampopo There's a young Ken Watanabe in it.
Sunset Blvd Great classic that mirrors real life in those times. 1950's movie though but I just had to mention it anyway.
Big Trouble in Little China great action comedy
12 Angry Men Don't let the lack of scenery fool you. This movie is really really good. 1957 movie

12 Angry Men really is fantastic. I watched it once in a film class, I need to get a copy myself. I'm itching to buy the Criterion, but there are so many amazing films they put out that it's hard to stick with one in particular.

Ordinarily a group of men talking in a single room in black and white wouldn't be seen as thrilling, but 12 Angry Men really is suspenseful and fascinating.

If we're talking about classic movies, I'd recommend casablanca. If you're looking for 80s cheesiness? American Ninja!

I'm really disappointed that no one has mentioned The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. He's the greatest human who has ever lived!
Also, I'm going to suggest Stalag 17, with William Holden. Its an old B&W movie about a WWII POW camp in Germany, and it's one of my favorites ever.
Also, He-Man & The Masters of the Universe, with a really young Courtney Cox.

Here's a few recommendations ranging from the early 90s to the 70s off the top of my head, most have probably been either suggested already or you've seen them, but still... in case you missed a few:
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Se7en (1995)
Léon (1994)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Wyatt Earp (1994)
Tombstone (1993)
The Fugitive (1993)
Schindler's List (1993)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Rain Man (1988)
The Untouchables (1987)
Der Name der Rose (1986)
Platoon (1986)
Blade Runner (1982)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
The Godfather (1972)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
These are all mostly classics (from pretty much every genre i could remember), and i've also skipped the late 90s (i've gone up to 95'), from which i'd have higher recommendations than some of these (at least one certain movie from 1999 should be rather obvious :P).

The kinds of stuff you would be more likely to find on an old VHS tape than a DVD. 80s and 90s stuff. A certain movie put me in a retro mood.
Already grabbed Labyrinth, its a true classic and should be in every collection. Also, my flatmate never watched it, so I need to make him do so.
