I'm really curious about this as I get a message with a clearly fake adres and a message about how their friends wants to add you or that you have won something. I'm so irritated by this shit and I hope Valve takes some action soon.
Also what is the type of message you get most? For me it's the "my friend wants to add you but couldn't' message today I got the "you won something clcik here" message for the first time.

How often do you get a scam message?

View Results
Multiple times a day
Once a day
Few times a week
once a week
Every now and then
Often
Never
Almost never

The answer would have to be "How often people don't try to scam you". And the answer would be not so often.

You can disable that privacy settings-> comment permissions.

As for me, most of the times when I make a post here, I get 1 or 2 random friend request from people with hidden profiles.

Why does everyone keep on saying "people with hidden profiles"? They're phishing bots, automated lines of code that batch invite users to paste a message linking to a .exe renamed to .scr so it can be uploaded to certain imagehosts undetected. And they're ran by multiple users who get the "hack" template from Youtube or websites and modify the script to send things to their own accounts. They scan many popular sites, groups, and probably friends lists of anyone they find. Eventually all roads lead to "you" (everyone).

The problem isn't getting hacked by them though, it's having naive friends who get hacked. Most people won't hesitate to click on a link from a trusted friend. Ideally you can just block and report them all for suspected hijacking/phishing.

But until Valve makes a criteria for making new accounts, people (the ones using the script) will just keep on exploiting the system and trying to harm users. Apparently poor countries don't have phones or money for phones, but they can buy GTA 5 for cheap on a computer capable of running it with decent internet. That's the excuse for lacking phone verification as a viable system. People can come up with the darnedest excuses for avoiding reliable security layers. -___-

+1 for the mention although my profile looks like a lvl 0 to non-friends as well XD (I'm lvl 40 btw). I was happy leaving it public to all steam users but then steam went off and erased that option and I don't want to have it visible in the whole web, so... :/

However, that's only for non-friends seeing your level, correct? It wouldn't say 'private'? I mean, even then, my comments are open. There's nothing stopping them from shooting a comment first.

I don't know how other steam users see my profile, I think it says private and shows as level 0 to anyone who is not my friend. My friends see me as lvl 40 though so there. ;p Fair point about the comments though, if you have those open for everyone there are no excuses. :p

The one with the random and unpronounceable name also added me, although it was another user with a random and unpronounceable name who added me. They both have the same avatar though.

Permalink

..

Because if / when you accept their invite, they wait until you send a message, then wait a random time and message you back with a typical "my friend wants to trade with you add them plez here is link to profile of themtheirs http://www.steamcomcunctity.com/prufile/secure/totallylegit420". Simple.

I never had a strange friend request or something, but it started 1-2 weeks ago. I ignored it at first and blocked them after the third try. A day later, more people sent me a request, currently 7. They're all level 0 and their profile is private. I wonder why it started just now.

Before it was two-three a week, but now i get two-three invites by private 0-1 lvl profiles every day. And at this point i don't even bother accepting them, if someone private adds me that i have no other contact with (especially if it's 0-1 lvl profile) i outright block them.

I tried to report that user that you linked.
Guess what I got in reply.

No wonder these scammers are running rampant on Steam.

perhaps it because we cannot avoid them
we reported 10 account
they make 100 new account.
and i believe steam support cant handle this everyday

What support should do is forward this to the development teams so something can be added to block these spammers.
What they are current doing is ignoring customers who take the time to report it and shrug them off with the suggestion to go write something on the forum.
