So, I see a lot of people that still play DotP 2013 on Steam. How many of you attended the Return to Ravnica prerelease over the weekend? Crack anything good? Mesmerizing plays? I managed to kill someone with an Essence Backlash, so that's all I got.

Draft, and I do concur. Limited is by far the best format is you don't feel like spending a metric ton of money on cards.

Oh, another expansion? I haven't played real MTG in ages... (But time to update my Magic Workstation files at least, I guess. :-))

Try Cockatrice! It's free, tons of awesome features, bigger community, and has RTR now.

I never heard of this one. Does it play smoothly automatized as dotp or you need to turn card yerself like in ws?

From what I've glimpsed, (basically) no rule support/enforcing. (That kind of stuff is extremely complicated, especially if you want to keep updating it with new cards.)

Well, there are moderators and you can have your account banned. You have game replays, log history, and other features. Most people I've played with have been pretty respectful, but like any other online service, trolls exist. Playing Standard and Modern is pretty straightforward, but Commander gets a bit more complicated.

Hmm... interesting. The web pages look a bit empty-ish, but once you start browsing the manual, it looks nice, with nothing important missing. Would be nice if it supported importing the Magic Workstation deck/library format, because I'd hate to have to enter all my cards again. (Or maybe they both use some relatively easily convertible text format, that'd be fine too.) :-) In any case, thanks!

You can import decks, either .cod (Cockatrice decklist), .dec, or .mwDeck formats, also supports copy and paste from your clipboard. To sideboard, prefix a card with SB: and it'll automatically sideboard. It's a very feature rich program.

I think I should buy this game on Steam... I've never played Magic before but it looks pretty good.

It's the best way to get into the game! It's casual with rules tweaked for new players, nothing too complicated, and everything except the new decks and making your cards shiny can be unlocked simply by playing. That said, don't buy the "complete version", as it has mostly everything unlocked. Then you'll have nothing to do. :(

Hm... okay then! I'll probably get it on the Winter Sale then ^_^

Have been wanting to get it too; What do you mean by the "complete version"?

The "Special Edition" you can see on the store page. You want the core game that's normally $9.99, as the SE unlocks everything for you, which takes away a monster amount of the fun. Eventually, you can pick the Expansion, too. That gives you a few new decks.

tl;dr only buy the core game and expansions for the most fun.

I like foil cards too much to resist the temptation to buy those.

Honestly, I've tried WoW and Yugioh TCG over my many years, but the mana mechanic in Magic keeps me coming back.

WoW?

Also Yugioh is terrible now lol. I haven't played competitively for like 8 years.(Wasn't even good) I play on duelnetwork once in awhile and it's so bad with all the 6 samurai crap and stuff.

WoW TCG. And I vaguely recall something about samurai.

I had some fun plays. The highlight, I think, was that I played Slaughter Games several times (at least four), and each time I managed to managed to guess a card that my opponent was holding in hand, forcing them to exile it. Killed one opponent with an 11-power hexproof guy, another with a 15-power lifelinking flier. I dealt one opponent 14 damage with Stab Wound, before he bounced it and later killed me (payback for when he dealt me 6 damage and forced me to kill my own guy).
