Hi SG, we have an exciting update for the community today, allowing users to create giveaways for gifts or keys that are region restricted.

How do I create a region restricted giveaway?

If you visit the create a giveaway page, you'll see a new section with the name Region Restrictions. At the moment you're able to select from five different regions: Poland, RU+CIS, SE Asia, South America and Turkey. This list will likely expand in the future to include other popular regions that are available. If you have a gift or key for a region that's not listed, we ask you not to post it at this time. Giveaways incorrectly listed, or region restricted giveaways created before this announcement will be removed.

How do I know if a giveaway is region restricted?

Region restricted giveaways appear in the giveaway list with a globe icon, and you'll notice the region name is visible next to the icon when viewing the giveaway. If you click these icons, you'll see a list of countries within the corresponding region. You'll only see giveaways on the homepage that are region free, or giveaways that are within your region. If you try to view a giveaway for another region, you'll see an error message.

How do I specify my region or change it?

As of yesterday, users select a country when registering on SG, setting their Steam region. If you're already registered, your IP address determined your country, and it can be viewed on the account page. Please double check this is accurate, and you're entering to win giveaways for the correct region. If the country is incorrect, and you're entering giveaways for another region, you'll be unable to redeem any games that are won, and we require all gifts or keys to be activated on your Steam account. If you need the country to be modified, please submit a ticket, and we'll adjust it for you.

Do region restricted giveaways contribute to my SG level?

Yes, region restricted giveaways function the same as every other giveaway, and follow the same rules for calculating value.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask below!

Ok now how can I disable this annoying notification? That would be much appreciated.

With the region-restricted giveaways now being allowed it would be very useful to actually show whether it's a Steam gift or a key being given away, as it is important for checking for the possibility to launch (not just activate) the game outside of the restricted region. A key icon next to a key giveaway would be nice.

I like it how region restricted GAs became a thing. This way, a lot of people for other regions can actually give games they bought on Steam. But people that are not in those region, cannot even open those restricted giveaways. I think that everyone should be allowed to see the description, comments etc., but only entering the giveaway would be restricted to those outside the region. Just a suggestion.

Any news on expanding the number of regions? I dun goofed and bought a North America only key, It'd be nice of I could give it away on here.

I see a couple of other mentions of the NA region in the thread from around the time it was made.

when you create the GA, there are options to choose from under 'Region Restrictions'. one is for RU+CIS, which is the option you must pick. the GA will be restricted to users from those countries.

I'm guessing he's referring to this one as I've seen a couple of giveaways done for it recently. It seems to be a restriction to where you buy it from not for activating, but I could be wrong.

AFAIK, for Steam keys the PurchaseRestrictedCountries determines where you can activate said key.

That being said, there's currently a grand total of 3 game keys in the whole of Steam database using this peculiar set of countries so the game could easily be given as either RU+CIS or Poland.

well its not a Pl region block and its not Ru+Cis so its a diffrent one :)

I know, but I meant if someone wanted to give it away under the current system, they could use either of those option to be sure they end up with a legit winner. I'm just not sure it's worth adding an option for 3 games total. There are a lot of more common cases (like NA restricted keys) that would benefit from having an option.

So far, however, I think cg has only added the common regions you can find on Steam gifts copies since there aren't as many variants as the locks put on keys.

I remember an user created a topic asking if he could buy a region locked gift for the winner region on a region free giveaway. I tried to find the topic now to see if there was any resolution, but couldn't. So, it's not a clear subject, it's not on the rules, and I would like to know if there's any problem with doing that. To clarify the scenario:

I'm from the South America (Latin America) region, so I have to go out of my way to get a region free gift. In the case my winner is from the same region as me, am I allowed to buy another copy of the same game on Steam with the region lock to give it to them? My intention with that is so I could make another GA for the same game with the copy I already have, as often I like to reach the highest amount of people I can with my giveaways. With that, I would be able to not only reach more people, but to give more copies of the game, depending on the outcome.

1st Do not accept the gift. If you already did return it to GA creator.
2nd Demand region free key from GA creator.
3rd If he agrees, accept the ROW gift and mark as received. If he denies after 7 days since Ga passed mark as not received and move on :>

If I've created a region lock giveaway but set it out as a public one, does it still require the minimum of 5 entries so that I can take credit of its CV?

Permalink

That works only for invite only/group/whitelist ones. So no, it doesn't.
FAQ:

  • If a giveaway is invite only, or for a whitelist or Steam group, it will only add value towards your level if it receives 5 or more entries. This is in place to prevent small groups of friends from attempting to cheat the contributor system, and to encourage users to expand the reach of their giveaways. The whitelist feature offers an easy way to target a larger audience, and you can combine it with small Steam groups to receive a greater number of giveaway entries if needed.

Hey there. Is there a way to know your key is region locked without activating it? It's easy to figure out if you have the game in your inventory, but what about keys?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not for 100% accuracy. You can check SteamDB to see if there are any region-locked packages, and then cross-reference if the store in question stocks any non-ROW keys.

If a game is region restricted here, is it restricted TO the regions listed only, or against them?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

TO.

It's explained below the region restriction setting in the giveaway creation page:
Select the countries where your gift or key can be activated to limit your giveaway to the appropriate users. If you choose one of the preset regions, please double-check the region accurately represents your giveaway.

The above country should be the region used by your Steam account. It is important you select the correct country, as it will allow you to enter region restricted giveaways available to you. If it needs to be changed, please contact support.

Maybe contact the support...

I had a similar problem where my account region has been changed to Réunion. The solution is to create a support ticket under the 'Other' category with 'SteamGifts account region change' headline. Screenshot and attach your Steam's account detail - the page where your home country is listed. In my case, the problem was fixed almost immediately.

Region restrictions... Save user preset... Please make it an option... Please!

The option to at least re-use the latest preset would be such a time saver.
