Hello steam gifts. I have an interesting thread for you, I want to know if there are any bible quotes or anything that you no of that have extremely outdated content that would be considered ludicrous in today's modern day society.
Ex: I don't know the quote or location (if somebody knew it and put it that would be great), but I remember that there was a quote saying that consuming shellfish is a sin.
Anything along those lines would be great. Thanks so much

This thread is mostly one sided. I'm all for open discussions but from the looks of it, the majority of posters in this topic are just interested in bashing religion. I'm not exactly sure this is the right place to discuss something like this. The hell am I saying, clearly this isn't the right place to discuss religion.

Honestly the reason why I only asked for what I did was not because I have anything against Christianity, hell I was raised in a Christian house. I know plenty of positives and logical arguments. The thing is that like any normal person I don't have the bible memorized, all a was looking for is like what "axer95" put. People took it out of hand

Yeah, I get what you meant but it looks like people think you came here wanting to know why the bible is bad.

So basically you come here with your mind made up saying that The Holy Bible is bad, and then go on and ask people to make your argument for you?

You see that not how it is for me personally. I don't believe that the holy bible is awful, I do believe tho because it was written by PEOPLE, not any divine being like God or Jesus Christ it has flaws. And I wasn't dead set on my POV. What people would say would have a slight impact.

How did the Isrealites know Alexader the Great before he was great? His name, conquests, and results of his death were written a long time before his death.
The massively fortified city of Babaylon was warned that it would be conquered in one night, that some idiot would leave the gates open at the time, and that the massive river protecting it would be diverted. again, long before the man. Again the person named to do it was not even born when that was written.
Long before anyone even thought the world was round, let alone that nothing holds it up, the bible plainly states Eathe hangs in a void.
Seriously, I could point out things all day, but then, I actually read the book, not just make assuptions based on what others tell me.

Your assumption is incorrect. The Israelites were in a convent with Gos and had to obey certain restrictions to set them apart from the surrounding nations. Most of those laws seem irrelelant, and also no longer binding once Jesus made a new convenant What you and many fail to understand is the logic behind those laws. Many of those laws are to do with hygine and health. Wash your hands, dont shit were you eat, dont get too friendly with dead people. Outdated? Hardly.
As for the limits on what type of meat could be eaten is also health related. Shellfish are great for absorbing toxins from the water and could therefore cause sickness. If you do some research, you will find the animals that were forbidden usually have some health concern with eating thier meat, eg no fish that does not have scales would include the porcupine fish which is mostly poisonous.
As I said though, those laws no longer apply and you can eat what you want, whenever you want.

I understand that the laws don't apply. Laws like that Is what I was looking for to begin with. I should have thought about how I worded it before I pressed post

I also don't understand why Christians eat "pork", there are health risks to pork; it makes you dumber, pigs eat their own shit, and also pig-worms can easily grow in the pork if not cooked correctly (the temperature for pork to be fully cooked to remove bacteria and eggs for potential tape-worm infection is VERY different for the temp. for beef, chicken, and other meats. Even my Jewish friend dosen't eat pork; in quite a few religions pork is forbidden; as Azatoth said, the laws don't apply today. It dosen't matter if the Bible says "don't eat yo pork" or not; but don't do it, there are health risks to it.

I'm a Deist.

Bible is a nice book, lots of good stories and most are as simple as a child could understand easily.

But ... it's existanse is irrelevant.Bible is a book that gathered writings of the last 1500 YEARS.It was even outdated when it first came out as one simple book. Also English is NOT a good language to understand Bible.Either learn Aramaic and read it with it's original writings or learn Arabic and read it's Aramaic translations.

I read Bible, Qur'an and some parts of Psalms.Bible is easier to understand but makes least sense.Qur'an is harder to understand but makes more sense.Psalms made no sense at all.

Please don't kill me , I humbly shared my opinions.I know you shouldn't share opinions on internet but OH LORD, I sinned forgive me CG.

P.S. I thought shellfish thing was in Torah, not in Bible.I'm not sure check here.

SeductiveBear, you mentioned in a previous reply you are playing devil's advocate and that your actual position may surprise some of us. Since a number of people have stated their positions, would you care to tell us what your position is?

To answer your original question, I believe that there are countless things in the bible that modern society would consider ludicrous and outdated, but I also believe modern society isn't the yardstick by which we should judge the validity of the bible. As someone else pointed in another comment, "we can't possible know what aspects of our modern society are going to be labeled as barbaric in 2000 years". If our own society's social norms are constantly changing how then is what we say today any more valid than what we will say in another 50 years, or 100 years, or 2000 years? It is not; because society will change over time and what is acceptable today will be abhorant tomorrow; what is abhorant today will be acceptable tomorrow.

If you agree with that statement then consider that the bible has not changed in over 2000 years. Though some have tried to eradicate it, change it, add to it, or take away from it the bible that we have today is consistent with what we had 2000 years ago and that is because it has not become outdated or irrelevant. The claim of the bible is that it is God's own words, written by men that He chose, but nevertheless the words are completely inspired (lit. "breathed") by God: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16).

I understand you do not hold this, but if God is the bible's author as scripture itself claims, and if we are the intended audience, then what God has written is still relevant to us today. Even the old mosaic laws are still relevant because they allow us to see how Christ has perfectly fulfilled the law on our behalf. It is relevant because it contains everything God wants us to know about Himself, His person, His character, His will, and about ourselves in relationship to Him.

Most importantly the bible is as relevant today as it has ever been because if we take God at his word, it completely changes a person's life. Instead of believing what modern society deems is right or wrong at any given point in history, we have been given God's moral laws which are unchanging and perfect because He is unchanging and perfect. Moreover the person bound for hell (eternal punishment and separation from God) becomes a person bound for heaven (eternal peace and intimacy with God). To put it concisely, our eternal salvation comes from trusting in this: "that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:4)

Kinda of hard to think of it like that instead I say a coping mechanism to deal with life. Strangely though I don't see many people who call themselves part of a religion following their rules so maybe your right because what kind of person thinks they will go to heaven or whatever the reward is for being good without following it. (Example about 60 percent of marriages involve cheating in some point of their marriage despite the huge ceremony with priest and the couple vowing to be together till death do they part)

So edgy.

Religion itself is not the problem. Humans as a species crave some sort of communal framework, which religion very neatly supplies. I know many people who are not religious, but attend services simply because it provides a great communal experience. I myself go every Saturday just for the Scotch club (price: two decent bottles per year).

The issue is when people start twisting the tenets of the religions (i.e. don't be an ass) to meet their own goals. Or when people start needing to prove how much holier they are than the previous generation/other people. Things like not mixing wool and linen in a single garment, or doing stupid things with eggs and nests, or twirling chickens around your head, are biblical obligations that only most extreme biblical purists would really pay attention to.

tldr: Religion can be a great experience for some people, and sometimes assholes try to make a bigger deal of religion than is healthy.
