Dirt 2 is not unplayable... on Windows 7 Pro 64 at least. Not sure what your system specs are. I recently picked up Battlestations Midway and Battlestations Pacific, and decided to try Pacific first. I was having CTD, so I went to the forums. Turns out it's a GFWL game as well. I followed the instructions in this post and BSP runs like a charm now. Maybe that's why my Dirt 2 runs and nobody else's here does?
EDIT for clarity: make sure you're logged into Windows Live before you try running the game. I had trouble logging into my online account so was prompted to update my Windows Live Sign In Assistant. After that, smooth sailing.
EDIT again: Here's the link for Windows Live Sign In Assistant

Now, that's not true, either. I installed the game last night and played it, ran the first race, saved my progress. Just now I ran the game again to see if my load/save was screwed up as you said and it works just fine.
Is there some information I can give you all about my setup that may help you figure out how to get your own games running properly? I kind of have a little survivor guilt LOL

THX, I'll try it when I get back home. But I tried 7 or 8 different versions already and I just had to clean my system of them, because not even one worked.
Basically you have to find that one version which is correct, and I didn't even found what version number is it.
Anyway, this is major fail for Codemasters. Customer should be able to just click "play" and play, not spend hour finding solution on Internet.

Agreed. I didn't understand the full issue you were dealing with here. Didn't mean to pile on you. Good luck.

I can't play Dirt 2, Grid, F1 2010 Steam versions at all as well as non-steam Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising, Operation Flashpoint Red River gave me so much trouble that I lost the incentive to play. Good thing I got them all in bundles or massive discounts, or I would be raging. But good luck to Codemasters for me buying any other of their games.
I will miss Dirts and Grids as much as I miss Assassin's Creeds though :(

I can play Dirt 2 just fine. In fact, I'm doing so now. Logged into Windows Live. And if you think I'm trolling, tell me what you want me to write on a post it or something, and I'll post a screenshot of the game on my monitor with the Steam overlay on and the post-it. I have Windows 7 Pro.

I have no reason not to believe you. I was able to launch those games until I had to reinstall my OS (and it ran just as steam installed it), but now I'm unable to solve "what component is missing" puzzle. That's not how it should be. Of over 600 titles in my library, only 10 or so cause trouble. And all are either GFWL or UPlay titles.

Ok, that makes sense. And that sucks. I agree with you that it should't be that frustrating. GFWL is a pox. I never claimed to like it (or Uplay) but we have it forced on us if we want to play some games.

You're lucky. I had Grid working until I had hdd failure and was forced to do clean Win7 install on new hdd. After that I tried 8 different GFWL versions and not single one worked. Every codemasters game (except my old CMR2 :P) just closes upon creating a window handle.

Win 8 users need to uninstall everything GFWL, and d/l the most recent Game for Windows MARKETPLACE from xbox.com

GFWL makes things harder yeah, I gave up multiple times playing GTA IV because of this, and on GTA IV also the Social Club can give problems, besides the game itself. I have Windows 8.1, someone said above it doesn't give problems, but it does xd, after installing the games, you need to install manually GFWL, and then it should work properly, but is still gives all kind of problems. It used to work "decent" but since I bought and SSD and reinstalled OS there, it gives more problems now, but you can actually play the games if you install and configure/fix it.

my system is win 8 pro x64
for me this solved the problem:
I uninstalled MS Games for windows
then I downloaded MS Games for windows from this link http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
BEFORE I run SETUP, I set the properties of the setup file on COMPATIBILITY MODE with "Windows 7" and also CHECKED the field "Run as Administrator"
After setup I launch the MS Games for windows and closed it, then I copied files
xlive.dll
xlive.dll.cat
xlivefnt.dll
xliveinstall.dll
xliveinstallhost.exe
FROM folder C:WindowsSysWOW64
TO THE folder C:WindowsSystem32
5, I run the game...

Not only did they promise to fix DiRT 3's game breaking problem for many, (of using Games For Windows Live) they also continue to put it on sale so more people get the game and find out they can't play it. I used to be able to play it but after Windows 8.1 update I haven't been able to find a working workaround for myself. They have promised since the beginning of this year to remove GFWL and fix it, but a couple of months back they went silent on it but have released Grid Autosport and teased DiRT 4...
:P Really Wish I could play the split screen.
