So many MMO's, so many disappointments....
I first started playing MMO's around 1987. Anarchy Online and Everquest are still around, but I stopped playing them when WoW came out. I haven't played every MMO, but I have played quite a few. Enough that I grew to hate monthly subs and grinding, as it turns out. At this point, I've come to dislike most MMO's, so the game has to be quite special for me to bother sinking any time into it. These are the few MMO's I currently play:
If I had more time to game, I would probably also be playing Rift, LOTRO, and maybe Planetside 2.

Depends on what you'll expect from the game.
If you'd like something light-headed, Spiral Knights might be OK(I'm not talking about spending >500 hrs but about play4fun, chatting here is pretty interesting :) ). Also you might try out WoW as its the classic of genre, there are some nice moments in there. Also you'd try Path of Exile. It's more Diablo-like, but f2p and, I think, better than Diablo 3. In the end, spend some time examining Star Trek Online and APB Reloaded, you might find out something interesting inside. For now, that's all that worth it, in my opinion.
Good luck anyway!

-If you're into action combat, Vindictus is pretty great. It's more of a dungeon crawler though.
-The original Guild Wars is still worth playing through even though it's in mainteinance mode. Its combat system is incredibly varied thanks to its skill system, which allows you to mix and match different professions' skills. The enemy mobs and the npcs you can add to your group have responsive, interesting group AI. (You get to customize your npcs' skill bars and control them). And the lore's great! My advice: start with Nightfall. :3

Guild Wars 2 is the one I'm currently playing again. I just had the bad luck to restart playing after the current season of new story pieces every 2 weeks has ended. This should start up again in not too far a future.
If you don't need graphics, try some MUDs. They are the grandfather of the MMORPGs. Simple Telnet-client, so have fun with text-only ;) An example would be: https://www.unitopia.de/
Elder Scrolls Online in my opinion feels too generic and has monthly costs, so I cannot recommend it to anyone.

Final Fantasy XIV has blown me away. Normally I hate hotbar type stand there and wail on target games but XIV managed to keep me hooked for months. It's pretty fun and the end game bosses are both impressive and challenging. The UI is perhaps the most intuitive and informative of any in a game I've played, and it seems fairly accessible to newbies (I made it through all of the early game and a good chunk of the end game without a real guild, and you can find parties for end game content fairly easily if you know what you're doing.
Only downside is you might have to be patient. It's a fairly simple game, but there is a bit of a learning curve apparently, and unless you bring a party you can communicate with, you may get tossed into the short end of the gene pool and have to babysit a few idiots who can't do their jobs properly. That said, other than the inept players, it's pretty fun!
The game is $30, but you can occasionally catch it on sale (Amazon has had it on sale a lot) and there is a $15 subscription per month, with associated in-game rewards at certain accumulated subscription time.
Another recommendation would be Perpetuum. It feels a bit spreadsheet like, and many people compare it to EVE (which I haven't played, so I can't help with that) but it has a cool setting and a sense of exploration. I haven't played it a lot, and it is a VERY slow game, but it would be interesting to play for a while and explore, and the community seems pretty solid.
Perpetuum is $28.99 on Steam. It may be available for less- I managed to acquire it for six keys, but I am not sure on availability. It was in a bundle once, but apparently there were very few buyers.
Final recommendation as an end note is DDO. Dungeons and Dragons Online is probably the MMO I have played the most, and one I enjoy a lot. It is unique in terms of all of the areas in which you do things are instanced, and instead of earning experience and loot for hitting monsters, you are rewarded as you complete objectives. This makes it seem more engaging than "Go kill 20 wolves for their pelts and walk back to me" that just seems so redundant. It also has a good amount of character customization.
The downside is the cost. DDO is probably the most expensive game I've played because of all the content. There is quite a pay gate, and you should expect to spend at least $20 to enjoy the game, and probably more if you play it seriously. While casual play through low level content is quite fun for a free to play player, and the new experience depletion system is MUCH more friendly to players without expansion content, expect to either subscribe to VIP or buy at least a few content packs to enjoy the game fully. Many services are convenience based, and you can earn cash shop currency very slowly and find most of the items you would want, but the amount of time required may make the cash shop more viable, depending on your income.

Guild Wars 2(though I stopped playing after 2.5k hours) - I liked GW2 because they got rid of the fetch quest system and just let you explore the whole map and doing the dynamic events. Also the combat system is fun with limited skills and weapon based skills.Sadly after getting 80 then the boring PvE part comes. You just keep exploring(depends on luck it may worth it),do some of the "end-game" events which atm are just a blob(a lot of people gathered at 1 spot) feast and there isnt much of skill involved. Dungeons are cool in first 2-3 times but later on you will face groups that want 6k+ achievment points, only dps gear, rushing group and such,so for dungeons better do it with friends/guild mates only. If you dont want to PvE jump to WvW and hope for the best aka good fights and not just "karma train"(cap objective and run). PvP isn't bad but there are some OP builds which are beyond deadly in a hands of a good player.
Warframe - grindfeast space ninja shooter. It manage to get me thanks to the parkour elements, variety of guns and warframes. Sadly the game is pretty limited from inventory space so you either have to be a good trader or here and there need to spend few bucks(if you get a 50-75% off coupon from next plat purchase from login rewards). Game is fun in short sessions and with friends(what a surprise). But sad part is that as starter if you play online(you can join other ppl or they can join your server) you may face high rank players who will just rush through the level and will kill the fun(unless you are too lazy to play atm). There isn't much of end game content atm but often DE adds new kind of missions/events for ppl to do.
The Secret World - the whole modern setting and well made quests makes the game worth it. Game doesn't have class system. You just earn skill and ability points and put them wherever you want. There is 1 special kind of quests(investigate) that will require you to think and use google(not for walkthroughs but for information around quest hints) . Everything else is pretty generic.

WaR, at launch when people actually played it the mesh of pvp and pve was perfect, you could pvp in a relatively balanced world there were both instanced and overworld pvp areas in every single zone which left the pve people unmolested. That combined with its lovely lorebook/collections system. I don't know if it still has players, last time I got on it was quite dead.
EVE, its unique, play it and see what I mean.
LotRO, for a free to play game there is almost not pay to win purchases, I have a lifetime account from when it wasn't f2p and they give me a monthly allowance of the pay for perks currency which I never run out of, the only game beneficial purchase are better mounts, everything else is (easily) obtainable through game play.

WoW is good, tho I suspect it's going to go rather craptastic with some of the upcoming changes. Not sure I can recommend it in good conscience, but I've had an awful lot of fun with it in the past.
Both EQ and EQ2 are pretty decent, as long as you don't mind something that's obviously a little older, and in the case of EQ, slower paced. If you're the sort who enjoys idly playing a game while watching tv or something, it might actually be your dream MMO due to the pacing.
NWO and DCUO are siblings seperated at birth. Different theme, different companies, same spammy gameplay. DCUO's customization is pretty fun, and I enjoy some of the stuff on both of them, but they'll destroy your hands if you don't choose your build and binds wisely.
STO is straight up fun if you like Star Trek. You can take it as seriously as any hardcore WoW raider and work your ass off to grind for the best possible stuff, or you can play at your own pace in normal for the sheer joy of flying a starship.
I wish City of Heroes was still around...much as I love the others, it was the best I've played to date.

Guild Wars 2. Beastly until you will reach lvl cap and try everything you can try. Then it sucks cus Anet doesnt give a shit about adding any fresh and perma stuff
Aion. I've enjoyed it a lot. Nice classes (ofc contains uber OP classes like Assassin and Sorcerer), nice graphics, nie solo instances, nice setting, nice wings. Rly nice game
World of Tanks. Full of broken things and retarded matchmaking (You're a good player ? Well then enjoy playing with idiots in your team) but I rly enjoy it
Planetside 2. Helluva good MMOFPS. Kinda grindy to get good stuff but when they introduced additional missions and dynamic exp bonuses on certain areas its now much easier to get credits to buy stuff

Please list your 1-3 favorite mmo's and why you like them. If I find a game I like I will give away the daily bundle (all tiers under 10$) until the daily bundle is over. If I do not find a game a like but still get some nice replies I will give away just one daily bundle (10$- value) for each good game listed which I haven't already played/thought about returning to.
