I'm currently using Norton Internet Security (got it free with my new computer a while back). I only have 11 days left though, so it's time to find something new. (I meant to ask this sooner, but keep forgetting)

I've used NIS for a few years now and I've never had any problems, however I'd like to find a good free software that works just as well or better.

What would you guys recommend?

None, protections is for wimps!

Most of the free ones are fine and many times better then the paid ones. Avast, AVG, Etc...

Bitdefender is amazing but pay, thats probably the best one, at least thats what I have been told.

Yeh, the free ones are more than enough. Although I'm choking on false positives. More often than not, I have my AV off.

Been using Kaspersky for 2 years now. Great product, although their latest edition disables capital letters when typing passwords on Chrome with their browser add-on, forcing you to use their on screen keyboard. Bit annoying, but hey, at least it's doing its job. For free AVs, is go with Avast! MSE isn't too bad...

Microsoft Essentials is actually not shit, surprisingly. if however you dont have a legit version of windows, go for Avast.

It actually is, not surprisingly, as it's a Microsoft product; which most seem to fail. It doesn't detect anything because it literally does nothing.

Well since I actually know when my computer is acting odd I would say it got everything that tried to get in.

Your question seems dumb to me, if it didn't catch something I would have put that in my main post....

I kept this URL around for just such an occasion. Try checking out AV-Comparatives' website for the latest, detailed information on AV software.

avast! is really cool.
I heard if you were to obtain an illegal copy of a full version of avast! and it runs out, they ask you to buy it and give you a discount.

If you want to get a free one, I recommend go for Avast.

I used to have it, but just grab a copy of Bitdefender Internet Security few months ago for under 1 buck.

if you wanna pay for it bitdefender or kaspersky both are the best for home you can visit this site to check it
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

if you dont trust in this page you can go to google and type top 10 antivirus 2013 or best antivirus 2013 and see the result.

I cant recommend you one of this i got kaspersky for 4 years i switch to bitdefender because i test it in trial.

Is another option you can test kaspersky or bitdefender in trial, when expires one install the other and after both trials expire own one.

Here you go, this link WILL help you choose. It give you chart for month, year, and every respective you want to see.
Personally, I'm using kaspersky. I've been using AVG, Avast, Norton, Avira, and now I'm using Kaspersky. If you're a paranoid person and hate false alarm I suggest you use kaspersky. But you must remember this, some people feels that kaspersky make your PC heavy.

Edit: my bad, I forgot to give you the link

I have had Kaspersky for two years now and don't see any negative impact on my (admittedly fairly beefy) PC.

Yep, I didn't say all people. I say some people have this problem and I don't know why. In my case, there's no problem as well.

I'm using Bitdefener right now. I bought a few of them during that February sale for thirteen cents. I'll give you one if you want, it's for one year.

I vaguely remember something like that, but I didn't realize how soon my AV was expiring at the time. I should've jumped on it.

I personally use Kasperky Internet Security 2013. it has antivirus, firewall, payment protection and many other funtions.
Since 3 days ago someone is trying to use a vulnerability of Microsoft Visual 2005 so he can place a worm in my computer but KIS's firewall is doing his job and everytime stops the attack. So what can i say more about it... i totally trust this product because i never got infected no matter what kind of attack was.

Have a look
