I don't know a ton about computers but I've been considering upgrading my graphics. The Nvidia GTX 750 Ti looks pretty sick (and I like the price) and I'm wondering if it's a good choice. I currently have have an Nvidia GeForce GT 640. Is it worth upgrading?

Its more powerful enough to warrant an upgrade. I've only been keeping half an eye on the GPU market, but what I can say is, the 750ti is pretty amazing when it comes to power consumption. At the prices in the UK, AMD is a better option, the 750ti sits between a 260X and a 265 on performance, so it depends a lot on what prices you can get the cards for in your region.

If you are not impressed with mantle, then it is a far better card than the 260X (power consumption is about 2/3), but the 265 is more powerful.

Similar performance to GTX 650 Ti Boost, but with reduced power consumption and temperatures.

The 750 Ti should be about two times as fast as your 640. Double the performance.

Thanks for the feedback.

follow up question. Could I just open up my computer and switch out the cards with little hassle? Will it just be a pull out/put in procedure or will it be more complicated than that? Never done anything like this before.

Just us a driver sweeper to get rid of nvidia drivers first!

It's pretty straightforward. Don't even need to use the driver sweeper, if you go from one NVIDIA card to other.

I'll be buying one too for my second computer. That card is one efficient little monster.

Make sure you order the right model of the card based on your setup. If you have a 6-pin PCI-e power cable and enough space, you'd be better off with a version with better cooling and a PCI-e port such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487028 (can't remember how to clicky, and I haven't reinstalled SG+ yet). If not, go for a more basic one, such as the stock model. Also make sure you pick the one with the right amount of RAM (1GB or 2GB).

you could better get a 780 Ti and wait for the price to drop since the Black Titan(just released) and the 790(not yet) will release shortly. So I think the price will drop.

You're suggesting that he gets a $600-700 graphics card rather than a $150 one?

that way he doesn't have to upgrade it and I think it will drop to like 550 or something like that

Even I am hesitant to spend that much when so few games can really use it.

The 750Ti is probably the best Nvidia card in terms of performance per watt. If you're all about saving power, then go ahead and upgrade to it. If not then grab the AMD 265.

Until more Maxwell cards hit the market, it is the best card in terms of perf/watt.
