For my niece. Shes tired of sonic all star racing and before you say it no she won't like secret of the magic crystals and besides she won't understand a thing.

Something easy and sandboxy.

I should add that her english isn't very good and castle of illusion was too hard for her so she would need something easy and simple to understand.

Also the game has to be on steam and easy, shes really bad at platformers.

After some consideration I have decided that I will force her to play bad rats.

Like any kid born in the 80's I would still get a console like the old Nintendo or a cheap computer for her to be playing DOS-games. Because it's a girl DOS-games/Computer would be too hard at that age. I would recommend the older Nintendo's like Super Nintendo or even Sega Master System II, you can buy it on ebay for 50 dollar and get 100's of games with it, that's like an insane amount of choice and gameplay hours. Those were the best times ever. I don't like the new generation games tbh. Except maybe games like Starbound could fit her. Otherwise there is too much blood and aggresion everywhere. Ofcourse you could also get her The Sims series.

Edit: Don't get Starbound, she'll be frustrated when she comes online after a patch to see everything wiped from the game each couple of weeks, or each fix to see that all chests with loot are gone.

what kinda sexist comment is that?! girls and boys can play games just as well as each other. Furthermore, you forget how competent children are with technology. Majority of my students have cell phones and are all too familiar with popular video games. They can easily find their way through modern child friendly games.

Nice sexist comment there like girls don't play hard games. I'm female, been playing games since the 80s and most of the games I played as a kid were those hard DOS games. It depends on the child, not on what their gender is.

Why does it should be a Steam game? You know, there are a lot of novice-friendly games that you can play on an emulator, say Spore, any almost any JRPG (just level up and keep goin') but well, i find it hard to look for an easy game, i loved hard games since child... Oh, you could try any Crash Bandicoot game, i mean, she's 9, she may lose, but you wont get much easier games... One has to try to improve on games, you know?

I think I read that he / she got frustrated by shooters, so I'm recommending more of an action, rpg or some games with puzzles involved

This is a very common question among parents. I have two nieces, ages 7 and 9, and I can tell you the kinds of games these girls play on Steam.

  • Costume Quest
  • Castle Crashers
  • Toki Tori (1 & 2)
  • Worms Armageddon
  • D.C. Universe Online
  • Global Agenda
  • Magic The Gathering
  • Plants vs. Zombies
  • Torchlight (1 & 2)
  • Terraria
  • Max & the Magic Marker (no longer playing it)
  • Secret of the Magic Crystal (no longer playing it)
  • Monster Loves You
  • Spore
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (the seven year-old plays this one, easy mode)
  • League of Legends (the nine year-old plays this one vs. bots)
  • Defender's Quest (just got the nine year-old hooked on this one)

The girls also dabble in simple adventure games (with my help and support). For example, the seven year-old is currently playing through The Longest Journey.

Games I have yet to try out on them:

  • Castle Story
  • Bastion
  • Delve Deeper
  • HOARD
  • Ticket to Ride
  • The Elder Scrolls games (with supervision)

Seriously. She's gotten through most of the campaigns on "easy" mode. I think she only has the last three left, or something like that.

I know you already clarified that but on 3DS, there is Rabbids 3D from Ubisoft. That's really suitable to learn how-to-play platformer games. Easy, cute, 3D effects are OK. (i mean you don't become crosseyed) Also you can turn 3D effects off from 3DS's settings.

Tag,
Hide n' seek,
red rover,
Hop scotch,
hot potato,
keep away,
follow the leader,
dodge ball,
duck duck goose,
cops n robbers.

Maybe even a sport like softball or soccer...

Encourage that 9 year old child to play outdoors, not inside staring at a computer screen.

Take this shameless promotion for Trackmania, because I played the demo from CNET for years before finally buying it. Simplest learning curve ever.
