My history was quite similar. However, the fact that I stopped downloading illegal copies from the Internet was not caused by the purchase of any specific game on STEAM but by the fact that I ran into some bundle. Bundles have convicted my that games are cheap enought for me to be able to support developers.
I would love to take part in the competition. :)

Whitelisted, you should be worried. I think I soaked between 800-1000 hours into Skyrim so far.

I can't give away my first steam game. Valve is already doing it for me :(

Aww, I'm not on your whitelist. All 3 are great games though, so thank you for your generosity!

So just buy the legendary ed. then and activate it for the DLC? :) I did it with XCOM.

Already have the base game, so it's really up to you to decide ;)
Quite big and expensive game for a first legally purchased one, shall I say. And if you ask me - my first one was Deus Ex: Human Revolution: all because "drm-free" version was lagging even on low after some time in-game so for some reason I though a steam copy would do better.

Skyrim was the first game I've played on Steam too. Unfortunately it wasn't mine - my brother let me share his account (back in the dark ages before Family Sharing existed, so I had to be offline all the time :D).
My own account remains Skyrim-less. The first game I've properly got on this one was Team Fortress 2. :D

The first game I bought on Steam was Team Fortress 2 for $20. I got a no-steam version from a LAN party and played it there. I had no direct access to the Internet at the time so I couldn't play Steam games, but it seemed like a fun game so I kept the pirate copy, made a Steam account and bought it anyway because, well, it's only fair to pay the creators.

My first 'game' on steam was 'Half-Life Platinum Pack' (not bought on steam, but activated on Steam. It was bought on CD before Steam existed, then activated on Steam for easy updates. 2nd item was Half-Life 2 Bronze, and since then I now have over 600 games...
Don't need to worry about whitelisting me, as I already have the listed games.

So back in 2013 I bought a physical copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition. I've been mostly pirating games up to that point (Skyrim included) but the whole modding community and the sheer amount of enjoyment I got out of the game convinced me to buy a legit copy of it.
Never looked back since, I bought almost all games I enjoyed playing before and never felt the need to pirate a game again.
Now that this Skyrim paid modding controversy is over it is only fitting to give away a copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition.
The giveaway is for whitelisted people only, however I'd be more than happy to add more people to my list. Just leave a comment and I'll get back to you if I decided to add you to my whitelist.
[Update] I'm trying to skim through the comments every now and then and whitelist people. If I just comment "whitelisted" or sth without a meaningful reply is not because I don't care about what your saying in your comment, I'm just simply way too tired to respond properly. (woke up at 3.30am today after 2 hours of sleep etc)
There is also a giveaway for Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins for the rest of you, so that you don't miss out. (both are excellent games, dare to say much much better than an un-modded Skyrim).
Without further ado:
The Elder Scrolls Skyrim Legendary Edition
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age: Origins
