You could buy many games with the money you spend on cigs. I quit smoking the day I ate two dishes of charred risotto with charred smoked bacon that my mom made. The taste was so awful that I stayed in bed sick two days. It was like drinking wasted gasoline out of a car. Now I can't take the smell of the smoke of the cigarettes and everything uses tobacco or is charred. Pretty useful isn't it? ;)

Well, there were two cases. In the first case, I was lucky enough that they weren't able to just go to the store and get their own, they had to ask me to do it for them. It was as simple as telling them no and letting them hate me. Of course the quitting was their idea, it's not like I just withheld it from them. The second case it was my girlfriend, and all I could do was be emotionally supportive, and do my best to convince her quitting was the best thing for her without seeming like I was trying to push her to quit.
It really was a trying process in both cases. I would have to say the best angle to tackle would be trying to convince them they're going to kill their partner if they don't quit. Second hand smoke is absolutely awful, and that would be a terrible guilt to have to live with. I have heard good things about some of the e-cigarettes, I dunno if that would be an option though.

Grim Fandango!
(kidding... there's a lot of smoking in that game, no matter how awesome the game itself is)
Thank you for quitting though! For yourself and others! A friend of mine successfully quit cold turkey last year, but another one picked up the habit -- I'm hoping she quits soon like she plans to.

this, theres the craving for some distraction even your hands cant shake off, eating some sort of nuts or snacks can help but eventually your hands will want the cigarrette, lollipops help hugely
i quit for about a year but after my aunt died i started again, i was actually thinking of doing something along the lines of this, not go out for 2 weeks except for work, play every free time i get and buy some candy to last me for a month, kudos and good luck i may be doing this in a few weeks as well lol

The best game to play whilst quitting an addiction is alcohol, unless you're trying to quit alcohol in which case you should try a different form of alcohol. Liquor -> wine -> beer -> liquor. Done.

Actually alcohol launches a need to smoke for many people. Myself included. That, and coffee. I would advise buying some nicorette just in case, if it gets unbearable. Nicotine gum + snacks kept me away from cancer rolls for 9 months. Unfortunately I craved for a smoke every single day, ending up starting again. "I'll just have this one..."

I thought about emulation.
IMO, the best strategy/rpg game ever made is Der Langrisser for the SNES. but you'll need the patience to play an oldie.
I have other suggestions for great strategy/rpg games, but again, depends if you'll use emulation.

great. do that. if you're a fan of tactics/rpg games, you won't be dissapointed.
you'll need the english patch(unless you know japanese, ofcourse!) and a suitable emulator, do take note, snes9x doesn't run it well. follow the instructions here:

Enjoy! :)

If you're open to emulation then I strongly suggest Final Fantasy Tactics. You'll be so busy dreaming up and building your dream team(s) that you won't even have time to think about smoking.

i managed to cold turkey last summer only to fall back into it around october. i can't recall whether i was playing anything at the time to distract me - i needed a LOT of distractions. however, i do remember that the longest days i ever went without cigs were the ones where i was off work, off school, and gorging on PERSONA 3: FES. i actually have persona 3 portable, and my gf HATES my bad smoking habit worse than the video games, maybe i should pick it back up.

Either of the Ys games. Those definitely will keep your hands busy, especially the boss rush on nightmare!

just be careful you don't quit one addiction and start another, remember gaming can turn into an addiction

and i need a good game to keep myself distracted/keep my hands busy. I'm big into turn based strategy and RPGs, although I enjoy pretty much every genre of game but sports. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good title to get lost in for a week or two? Also, since the price of starting a forum thread seems to be a giveaway, here you go :P.
