For some reason, it is easy for me to pick a movie I consider the best ever made (Stalker by Tarkovsky), but a 2nd best would be absolutely impossible to pick.

If you go by the critics, The Battleship Potemkin. I don't agree completely (it wouldn't be one of the 2nd best-contenders to me) but it is still a bloody good film.
