100 gems is the max from any item, it seems, so you won't beat that

It's having the opposite effect so far, at least on the cards I've checked. Prices are dropping fast.

Good thing is that I sold all mine two weeks ago.
The amount of cards will increase right now, so the prices will fall. But gems will disappear after event, (probably 18-th) so during steam winter sale cards prices will go up. After the sale everything will return to balance, with prices more or less the same as before gems.
But the global number of trash items on steam will drop significantly. Which in turn will give a slight boost to servers, increasing the time to next hardware upgrade - making long story short - Valve will save some money on hardware, while making money on higher number of transactions. Probably it is worth more than 200 000 copies of some games.
And one last thing - this is only my prediction. Not a fact. But you can quote me on that.

if someone makes Morrowind go for 66-75% off, I will kiss that person... to death. :D But seriously, I want Morrowind for 75% off.

Okay ladies and jellybeans. Your challenge if you choose to accept it, is to make sure that no auction for any item during this event exceeds one gem. Anyone who manages this feat will be declared a hero of steamgifts.

Well, made a few cents buying 3 cent backgrounds for 100 gems each, and then selling the packs of gems for more than 30 cents. Now the prices dropped under though, so I'm stopping with an extra 31 cents for the sale.

Wait for a price error on The Crew for $0.30 and you are done

finally I can get rid of all those duplicate backgrounds, muhahaha =)
Edit: Meh, this is gonna take forever with over 10,000 community items :(

Sheesh, it just started and the bids are crazy. :/ At least the booster pack creator sounds good. I had a couple cheap duplicate backgrounds laying around anyway.

Yeah, trashing the backgrounds is the way to go. $0.03 = 80 gems. Now to try and find small, forgotten games that I might be able to get for a reasonable price. There's some from bundles that I never got, like Resonance. It'd be nice if we could filter the list by On Wishlist. Doesn't look like anything Lucasarts is part of it.

That's what I'm probably going to do - bid on a few old bundled games I missed... so long as those stay low too. I'm waiting on that booster creator still. I'm sort of expecting it to cost way too many gems to be worth the cards you get in return, however.
...Pfft. As I was typing this, even my obscure old game bids were outbid. :p Probably better off to wait until they're doing these at 45 minute intervals.

Except history? They did that last xmas sale and a few months ago at summer sale.
For some reason, on day 1 of the sale the event cards jump up to around 50 cents or more.

I'm trying to figure out how much money worth a "gem" but result is not satisfactory. For example, Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army cards, around $0.08 in Market worth 20 gems. By other side, Skullgirls cards, around $0.14 in Market worth 12 gems. That makes impossible to do any calculation.
So, Steam is playing with values of cards, probably making them worthless for us, and people who use big amount of gems on bids, most likely would be overpaying game retail price just for "winning a bid".
