I converted my meager collection of backgrounds and emotes into gems and blew them all on a bid for Sproggiwood, because it was the first one I saw that was on my wishlist and in my pricerange. I immediately got outbid and now feel lethargic and inexplicably guilty.
Best Steam sale so far, A++.

why guilty? you can redraw your gems (if you are not first place) or you can let them there...if round1 is over and the first place gets the game, you automaticly bid on the next copy of that game. no Problem here. and if you don´t win an auction after all, you can buy Boosters for your gems if the auction-days are over :)

is it just me me or it this just a very clever way of ridding the marketplace of the old events items while making money? I'm sold :D

I have to admit - Valve is very good with making money out of thin air.

I didn't even notice that expires (hadn't clicked it). That makes this whole thing even better. :p

I DO NOT get who the fuck is ready to bid that much for something that expires mid january. Already that much for a permanent xmas themed profile would baffle me but here is even worse.

I don't understand how people even have that many. I looked up the top bidders profile on the Holiday Profile (currently over 7 million) and the dude only has like 200 games? In order to get that much he'd have to buy an insane amount of something and then crafting them for like 100 each.. 7000000 / 100 = 70,000 times that he would have to convert to gems.. I don't think there's even been enough time in the sale to even do all that. Also, he only has 1,636 market transactions, so that can't be the case.. idk.. unless I'm missing something, it just doesn't add up to me.

cs go gun emoticon is worth 100 gems and is very low priced on community market, so better sell those cards instead of making them into gems

actually gems price will rise... because all the cheap items in community market are vanishing. So to the ones that got gems by now, it will probably be cheaper
In any case... we can always bid the same value in gems on the games we would buy

It'll get worse. I reckon people are just waiting till around 5 minutes before the auction ends before going all out

I guess it comes up with the gem value according to how many people own the game. It's just an idea but an Afterfall insanity card is 3 gems and everyone has that game since it's been given away like every other month.

That is 3000$... where is the point? I don't understand... :|

The person seems to be packing them up and selling them again, I guess he is making a profit?

That is a lot of work and the price is dropping constantly.

The price is dropping because of a big lag, people sell everytime 0,01 less than the highest price, the listing is not updated properly, so even if a sack priced at 0,20€ is sold, market is showing it as available and so, the lowest price is now 0,20€... until someone sell for 0,19€, etc... but this seems to be fixed now, price is rising again to the normal price (around 0,30€, the price of 10 shitty backgrounds).

Can't even place a buy order at any price. Hurray for Steam's broken market once again!

It smelled fishy and it turned out to be fishy - so that mystery is solved.

Good old Christmas 2011 that was a great event. Anything after was pretty bad, but this one seems worse than all of them together. :(
I did not even win any noteworthy games back then but still thoroughly enjoyed the event, that year I spent most money on games and even played most of them. Christmas coal, I miss you...

When will this be released -> "Got extra Gems? Use it to craft Trading Card Booster Packs for games you own."
Comment has been collapsed.
the price differed from game to game, ranging from 500 gems to ~2000 gems.
but then again, I didn't have a look at all the booster packs before the site disappeared, so there's a chance that there might be cheaper and more expensive packs than the price range I mentioned.

I had the chance to craft some boosters before it was taken down and it seems the price is based on the amount of cards the full set contains, starting from 1200 gems for sets containing 5 cards all the way down to 400 for sets that contained about a dozen cards.

You get a free badge for bidding on something, free 100 exp, you can cancel bid after. Just for converting a shitty 3 cents emoticons or background into gems, some shitty 3 cents things give 100 gems, 1000 gems can be crafted into sack of gems, and decrafted too.

I'm trying to figure out how much money worth a "gem" but result is not satisfactory. For example, Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army cards, around $0.08 in Market worth 20 gems. By other side, Skullgirls cards, around $0.14 in Market worth 12 gems. That makes impossible to do any calculation.
So, Steam is playing with values of cards, probably making them worthless for us, and people who use big amount of gems on bids, most likely would be overpaying game retail price just for "winning a bid".
