Actually I love puzzles and I solved quite a few already. It always depends on the puzzle. Some of them are coded and for me it's fun to find out how they were encoded. I really dislike brute force puzzles, like guess a number between 1-1000, or guess what's in my pocket or anything like that. As long as the puzzle could be solved by logic + google + common sense they are fine, when they are not they suck.

Mostly I dislike them and am not willing to spend the time... Someone did a HOG puzzle a while back though that took a while, but wasn't something you'd likely get stuck on for hours, that one I actually liked.
Then you get the ITH where you just can't get the one final question ever, and ended up wasting an hour or more with nothing to show for it. Mostly I pass.... Often you don't even know what you're trying to enter for, which is even worse when you finally beat it down only to see "exists in account" or something you know you won't like.

The only time they really bother me is when the amount of effort is completely disproportionate to the game being given away and/or they don't mention the game before you start the puzzle.
A couple times I've found myself in the situation of "awesome, now I know the ins and outs of thermal dynamics and oh wait it was for a random bundled HOG."

I don't like 'internet puzzles'. You know, the ones where there's literally no instructions, and it turns out you have to find some f__kin' code in the hex value of a myspace photo from 12 years ago and enter it into a text box on a web page hidden behind seven layers of random passwords.
Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I do think puzzles without clear instructions/answers are bloody stupid.
"What, you can't figure it out? Just go to Zelgoobliggy's guide or w/e. The answer might have something to do with one of the dozen encryption methods listed there!"

Well, 90% of the cases it's in page's source, hidden in italic/bold, and all the encription can be done with xlate. I had to use DNA-coding once, morse once or twice, ceasarean shift (one of the most well-known cipher) maybe once. Most stuff is not that difficult It's really, really rare that anything else got featured from the guide.

In my opinion, puzzles are supposed to be
some kind of scrambled number/letter thing
Although personally I'm to dumb to solve anything even remotely challenging. But do you feel satisfied when you can just google the answer or right-click search image and forget what it was about 10 seconds later? Sure, I'm happy I got the link to giveaway, but I definetely don't feel proud.
And look at the others - ambidot even started drinking because he is not intelectually satisfied.
There should be more puzzles which you have to actually solve to keep your brain stimulated, otherwise it will dry out being around pumpkins like me.
For anyone interested in more complex puzzles, I may suggest checking out "11bx1371" puzzle on youtube (yes, it's a puzzle, and there's also subreddit for it).

Yes. When I Google something or reverse image search, I'll learn something new. When I just try to set 5 letters/numbers in a correct order so maybe one of the combinations works, I'm not really doing anything productive or even intellectually stimulating.

I appreciate this thread greatly because it is my goal to figure out ways to make more enjoyable puzzles for all on the board! This is very valuable input!!
Keep brainstorming and sharing and I think we can all find some improvements for the future!

Science puzzles are totally enjoyable, just saying. ;P

Your pyramid puzzle was good because you'd at least gave out hints to specific questions, and you took the time and effort to do it. Only reason why I kept going at the time.
Now for puzzles that act like 'insider jokes/info', those are just annoying.

I absolutely hate frustrating puzzles where format is an issue... So I try to put as many possible variations for acceptable answers...
Also I very much believe to be available for personal hints given... I like interacting with those trying to solve my puzzles. I get to know you guys and feel like I'm climbing the pyramid with you side by side.
I really like the experience... Then when I'm passing out gifts of ga I know who's actually winning them! It's an awesome feeling!

I really hate puzzles. I am lazy that is first why. Second is, that i often falls into language barrier, so sometimes i dont get, what that question means exactly. It is hard to explain, but every language or even country, have own habits and culture.
But i like programming puzzles :D

When I made a puzzle I was having trouble trying to balance not making the puzzle too easy that it's almost the same as just posting the link and then having it be too hard. Here it is, I decided not to outright mention the subject because that made it too easy, but it ended being a bit harder than intended as I was hoping the title of the puzzle would help, but there where too many Dr Becketts, at least doing a reverse image search to my avatar helped some people.

I hate puzzles. Never join them, never create them.
BUT there was a puzzle I enjoyed a lot, the one that gave you 2 pictures and you had to guess the name of the game. That was brilliant

IQ tests are mostly about reasoning, it's made so not to take advantage of what you might have learned
SG puzzles require you to learn a skill, but hey with practice you will start completing a few of them
Personally i only go after movie related puzzles, even if their impossible for me, i usually have more fun with those

Some of them are fun, but some are annoying as fuck. If I don't solve it and get in the GA, I'm not heartbroken. I am perfectly capable of buying my own games.

Well, I always have a boatload of games to give away, and I don't do puzzles.
My next batch will be stuff you can enter. Hopefully there will be something you like.

To be honest I don't mind most of the programming-like puzzles, which involving translations of codes, but most importantly, finding them. Sometimes they are cleverly hidden, and it really feels good to find them.
I also enjoy google-able quizes, but it's the best if it's built around one thing, for example questions about a certain city. Random questions are indeed will be forgotten really soon, but these blocks can build a bigger picture about the topic of the puzzle, and can be really intresting - though it needs an intresting theme. Googling how many hamsterpower a newest racing car has, or something similar mumbojumbo is incredibly boring. But intresting topics, about cities, animals, customs of a country - these are great topics, because even a wikipedia page of it can be really intresting and educational, not in a forced way.
And my dirty pleasures - wordplays, jokes, puns and visual puns (with enough hints to help) - I also loved the few puzzles when the contestants has to identify games, movies, etc. It can be annoying if it's too niche, but a puzzle about popular games, series, movies can work really well with bigger groups of people.
And at the end, don't forget that these puzzles are done with the main purpose as serving as a gate towards giveaways, "being fun" is not their main priority. Fantastic puzzles can be done with even the old " hide the 5 characters" mode if you're instead of longing for learning, want to test your wits and how creative you can get within boundaries, or think outside of the box.
( There was once a puzzle in which we had to identify people from pictures - then we found that all of them has airports named after them, then we realized that on the map they are forming a triangle - I couldn't finish the puzzle at that point because I was totally stupid for english geometry, but it was one hell of a puzzle. Similarly, yet differently the Train of Madness puzzle wonderfully mixed the oldschool character hiding and outside of the box thinking - these were maybe the best puzzles I've been took part in)

Did you not try the Multidimensional Train? :)
I did like parts of what we did with the Train of Madness though :)

Lol all iq tests online are not different from "which pokemon are you?" What makes Sg puzzles unique is it has human factor a lot. Sometimes you have to think like puzzle maker to solve it. That's why it's hard not because you are dumb or anything. I like puzzles i solve them even though i won't enter most of giveaways. It's fun for me and sometimes you learn something from it.

Not quite... there are few that are very good. Only the timed ones. And they measure just some part of the whole intelligence, but definitely not Pokemon tests.
But yeah, thinking like someone else isn't exactly my strong skill...

Just because people score high and low on internet tests, it doesn't make them accurate. I've done the mensa entry test and succeeded, no IQ tests I've seen online comes even close to the challenge of that test. They are also way too short for accuracy.
I scored perfect on the entry test, but I still don't know what my IQ is accurately. It's not as simple as "if you get this score, you have that high IQ".
Comment has been collapsed.
I never said internet tests are accurate. They're at least little accurate in relative terms though, I mean if you take a test with 50 questions, and put two people to solve it, there are high chances that one who scores 150 is more intelligent in the area that puzzle measures than the one who scores 100, or isn't it so?
Comment has been collapsed.
Are you arguing against yourself? You're stating you haven't said they are accurate in your first sentence (which you have in both the post I replied to and the opening post), only to follow it up with saying they are somewhat accurate. :)
Accuracy isn't the same thing as high probability.

Are you arguing against yourself? You say they're not accurate, I say they're not accurate, you argue they're not accurate, and no one understands what's even argued here. I only mentioned the word "accurate" once before my previous post and this one, and that was not about online tests, and it was actually a question, not a claim. Pay attention, if you're so smart.

So "most accurate" means accurate? Which is the most warm place in south pole? Your logic tho.
But really, if I get 132 with a psychologist and 133 with an online test that's considered one of the best online tests, that seems accurate to me.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not sure what to make of you, every other post you claim that you say you don't think they accurate, only to follow up with the sentiment that they are. You just stated once more that you think they are accurate. I'm not sure why you're arguing against yourself still. I'm perfectly happy with you believing they are accurate, or not accurate, or whatever the flavor of the hour is. I was merely answering your loaded question regarding the subject. If you weren't happy with my reply on the matter, that's on you, I can't satisfy everyone.

Accurate and not accurate is not a black and white matter, and depending on the test, they're all on the grey area somewhere. That's what I'm trying to say.
As I said, in my experience, one test is accurate, but I'm not pushing my experience as indisputable truth about all tests and every situation, you see.

I don't even try solving any of those puzzles where things are hidden and shit like that,it's just annoying. What I love is making puzzles (anime themed) which make people laugh (at least I hope they do) . I don't want to annoy people or make them search up a turtorial on cryptography to be able to solve it.

Well, the idea behind making puzzle giveaways in the first place is to make people spend some time solving the puzzle/riddle. this prevents uninterested parties (whatever their reasons may be) from entering the giveaway, thus increasing the odds for those who put in the effort. Not that I doubt anyone doesn't understand the principle, it's just that given this information making a puzzle where the answers can be easily searched defeats the purpose, why not just make an invite only giveaway and link it on the forums, right?
That being said, you can make a "puzzle" that's based on understanding a subject deeply without it being too easily googled, like a math puzzle or something that needs to be worked out rather than just a simple factoid, but they aren't always easy to make and with many such puzzles (like a math puzzle) it generally requires more in-depth knowledge of a topic that might exclude people from entering.
That being said, I too am not the biggest fan of puzzles at large, to make harder puzzles a lot of puzzle makers have to rely on being vague and ambiguous or use misdirection and trickery. This contrasts vastly with how puzzles are in most video games, where everything to you upfront and it's just a matter of putting all your knowledge and know-how together to solve the puzzles
disclaimer: I haven't really been active in the puzzle scene since before the rise of itstoohard, so the puzzle meta may have changed drastically since I've been active :p
