I just want all of SG users to be aware that we should be grateful for what we have and that everything is gonna be okay, no matter where we are or what we do, we should always try to see the bright or positive side of things that happen in our lives.

I've seen a lot of topics referring to a particular celebration or achievement, but I've never seen one where people just want to be grateful for everything that is happening in their lives. I know I'm not the right person to create this topic because I constantly suffer of depression and wish I was dead, but I hope none of you feel that way and just enjoy what you have.

Take care guys and have a good day!

Should we be grateful for both the good things and bad things that happen in our lives?

I'm sure thankful for the gibs =) But...

Try to smile and see the positive side of things =)

In psychology this is called a double bind, and has an effect opposite to that intended on people who just cannot see things positively (a key component of being depressed). Basically, by telling them to be positive, which they can't, implies that there must be something wrong with them, which makes them even more negative/depressed/etc. It's akin to telling someone who suffers from crippling shyness or social anxiety "just be spontaneous". If they could, they would.

There is a sentence J Kabat-Zin uses (not sure who coined it) which I like immensely (quoted freely):

Remember that, as long as you are breathing, there is more right with you than there is wrong, no matter how bad or hopeless things may be looking now.

When I say that I mean that things may not be as dark or tragic as we might see them, and that we should try to look them from other perspective... Of course some people (myself included) can't do that very often and feel like crap for whatever reason, I'm just giving a little suggestion, trying to cheer up the people that might be feeling down before entering this thread... Therés nothing wrong with anybody, some just focus on the negative things while others focus more on the positive things...

I suffer from depression too, but I never considered doing anything too extreme.
I consider life to be a precious gift, so, even if mine is boring, I don't want to ruin that of others.
Instead, I want to make others happy, and that's why I registered here :)
Try to stay positive, because negative thoughts attracts even more negativity...
Thank you for the ride!

Nice thread topic, thank you for starting it!

I came to an interesting realization once while going through a depressive existential conundrum, and that is that in a statistical sense, we have beaten astronomical odds to be alive. Consider for a moment the vast improbabilities of having ever existed:

  1. Our solar system is but one tiny speck amongst the vast emptiness which comprises most of the universe.

  2. It would take around 12 quintillion (10^18) Earths to fill the empty volume of our solar system alone.

  3. In the vast, empty nothingness of space, we exist on this extremely dense collection of atoms called Earth

  4. Of the roughly 8.7 million current species on Earth, we were born human.

  5. Human women are born with around one million eggs in their ovaries.

  6. The average human male ejaculates about 500 billion sperm in a lifetime.

  7. You were the unique result of one of those sperm uniting with one of those eggs.

  8. While 7.5 billion humans currently inhabit the planet, your DNA is almost entirely unique (unless you are a twin or a clone).

  9. Even if you are a 100% DNA clone, your experiences which form your consciousness ARE entirely unique -- you are special, truly one in 7.5 billion (humans), and one in [some huge number] of biologically living organisms.

  10. In the (maybe) infinite configurations of space-time, you exist right here, right now. Those are some crazy, mind-boggling odds you have beaten, regardless anything else going on in your life.

So every day of existence is truly a miraculous confluence of odds. It's like we are winning the lottery of existence a googol (10^100) times over every single day we are alive. Truly, I believe, something to not take for granted.
