I play Rift (43' warrior on Gelidra server) and i got like 40 € in it in 2 moths...the game is not (really) pay2win, but buying and selling REX gives you a very large income or platinums, wich you can use to buy top gear from the Auctioneer

Afaik, you don't really need to buy any 'store' gear[Citation needed]. But I don't really have much experience with endgame content - so it's be wise to get a confirmation from someone else first.
Other than that, I like Rift's f2p model as you can buy pretty much anything from the shop with in-game currency. Oh and I should probably mention that you can't sell on the AH as a f2p player. So earning the money for your first REX (the item that gives you store currency) is gonna be a bit hard, but not impossible. But after that, you'll have AH access and it should be easier to make money.

You can buy the lower level dungeon gear from the store as a means to bypass the content if you are on your 4th character and don't want to have to grind through getting all your gear so you can raid. All the gear on the store can be earned through dungeons and most of the gear needs you to run the dungeons anyway to get the currency to buy it. The store is by no means pay2win.

Hmm, so far no one could find out who the developper was !

P2W,
bad AI,
graphics sucked until I bought The Glasses DLC,
buggy as hell, especially in the foliage,
permadeath
you can't do shit properly until you dedicate hours and hours to it, so it's not for casuals
usually when you get XP, your face gets hit with a shovel or something, so it doesn't really encourage you to do it
grind-oriented gameplay
you never actually own it, they just let you play it, like steam
quests usually suck and leave you with a big WTF at the end
Levolution can easily crash the game and is actually not much fun
The Hamster DLC is a ripoff and it doesn't last too long

When I reported bugs in The Hamster they gave it medicines and sticked a finger up its ass, so I'd be careful with that. The Hamster crashed.

Rift is a WoW clone that easily caught my attention. While it is free to play, it is worth spending $5 on credit for loyalty (can't be bothered explaining) so you can use the auction house.
However I'm currently hanging out for Everquest Next and Everquest Next Landmark. Landmark is in the next few months, and is a building side of the game. Next will out by the end of the year.
I've tried Neverwinter, Everquest 2, and a few other things and they just haven't caught me the same way as WoW did, and Rift does, and EQN/EQN:L will.

I don't really know much about Everquest Next. Played a pit of eq back in the day and still have a lvl 90(ish) sarnak warlock I never get on in eq2. I liked both of them (the housing decoration system in eq2 was outstanding, crafting was one of the better I had played, although another SoE game which is f2p now and completely devoid of life Vanguard had the best imo) i'll go google machine EQ Next.

I wouldn't hold your breath for EQN being out by the end of this year. I also have some serious reservations on the direction EQN is going and how it looks like it wants to cater to everyone without having a specific goal in mind. This is just my opinion of course and I am holding out hope the final product is awesome. If not, heres to hoping Pantheon: rise of the fallen is the next incarnation of Everquest lol

Playing on a private server helps because they almost always have away to get the PTW stuff free and easier

probably the best MMO out there for western gamers would be GW2.
it's b2p, so you buy it once and play it as long as you want to. thanks to this, the in-game shop is packed with cosmeticals mostly. you also can buy in-game shop items with regular in-game currency.
i'd say invest those 30-40 bucks once into that game.
and if you don't like action oriented gameplay and the lack of holy trinity, good ol' Aion is a title, you might wanna check out.
i can't handle that game anymore...any tabcycler became boring for me after picking up GW2.
i hand over the never ending grindfests to the eastern/asian boys 'n girls...they seem to like those for some reason.
if you like less tab-cycling, give Tera and Neverwinter a try.
if you're into boobies, jiggle physics and an almost criminal monotony and repetetivity (is that even a word?), try out scarlet blade. at least it's not a grinder for the most part.

I play Forsaken Worlds on a private server called Aria. They give you leaves for voting for their MMO site and then you can buy the things you need. The only thing you really have to cash shop for is if you want a specific looking mount/pet/fashion. Nothing really a necessity.

Lord of the Rings Online is my favorite truly f2p mmo. Otherwise if you're willing to spend a little, Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World are both great subscriptionless mmos.

Hello!
you might want to give Lord of the rings online a go :)
Many cities/regions that appear in the movies can be visited. (Bree, The shire, Rivendell, Isengard, Rohan, Helm's Deep,...)
I can honestly say that it has thé best community there is in the world of MMOs (and I've played quite alot of them).
The people speak english, all of them..
They are very helpful and friendly.
Most of them are 20+ so no annoying kids.. no offence kids.
You can play f2p. It is possible to play the full game without paying a dime.
The ingame currency can be earned through gameplay.
The crafting system is awesome. There are 5+ vocations (weaponsmith, metalsmith, jeweller, scholar, woodworking)
You can pick up the materials in game through mining ores, chopping wood, they spawn random in certain regions etc)
You will love it, I'm sure. It's F2P and has an amazing crafting system.
Give me a shout if you do start... I'll walk you through, if you like.

Get Aion. Pretty nice, but the problem is that you wont meet pretty much anyone at low levels. Another problem is grind. I still remember the pain of grinding levels 48-50 as Asmodian...in the Beluslan, doing repeatable 40k exp quests. I've stopped playing at level 58.
Get World of Tanks. The game sucks badly when it comes to Matchmaking (both tank tiers and player skills) but it can be quite fun to play. I'm still playing.
Get Planetside 2. Its awesome. Optimization is...quite bad, but the game itself is pretty great. Stopped playing but I'm planning to return to it
Get Path of Exile. I've only played the first act and lil of second but if you like Diablo/Torchligt, you will enjoy this one.
Don't get Tera. The biggest advertised thing was combat. And well...it sucks badly. Stopped playing after few days
Don't get GW2. Its quite good till u will level to 80 and try everything you can try. After that its horribly bad, worst of the worst. And its all due to Anet stupidity and their "Living Story is so cool, we're not going to change our way of developing the game". The truth is - Living Story sucks badly. BADLY. Stopped playing few months ago...nothing to do in this game. Bought WoW, expansions and perma content is what MMORPG needs, not some shitty temporary stories with shitloads of vanity cash items like what GW2 does
Don't get Runes of Magic - played it for quite a long while when I was young. But I remember that at lvl smth like 50 it is totally pay to win. You cant even go and do dungeons without ultra boosted gear that you can get only by buying cash shop items.
Don't get Royal Quest. Dammit, its ultra boring. Stopped playing after second zone.
Don't get Vindictus. It seems nice at first but it turns out its boring piece of junk

I was playing on Nexus if I remember this correctly. Well, finding anyone for lower level dungeons was almost impossible. Whole abyss is dead, noone is doing fort sieges, only Divine fortress got some attention.
Like I said its been a while since I've last played it. You said that 1-55 is easy...well, I doubt that they changed this asian grind. Same goes for gear, cus its always been AP grind as hell. Or dung grind. Drop rates for certain rare/eternal items was extremly low (Lannok run, always sword/spear, almost never orb/tome). Basically easiest one and most fun to get for me was the Divine set or whatever it has been called. You know, the one from colliseum. I had some nice fun in this 1vs1 PvP :) Got full PvE set, Ive started to work on PvP one but then I quit the game.
And what new class they are going to add in ? I remember that they have added Bard and..Gunner ? Well, ranger with guns. And I've read that Bard was OP as hell.
Anyway, I'm not going back. Playing it was worth it but going back...IMO its not. + I've bought WoW. So ATM I have 3 MMO's on my PC. I doubt I will have time for one more :D

"Sorry to burst you bubble, but MMO isn't defied with how much players you can play in an instance."
Yes, yes it is. What the fuck do you think "massively multiplayer" means?
"Also cities have more then 8 players."
This is true, but towns are more meta than game. You can't really do anything in them that you couldn't do in an 8-man instance, with the exception of shops and your vault. If you want to say that towns' higher population limits make the game technically an MMO, whatever. However, functionally it's really no different than Diablo II, which was definitely not an MMO.
Comment has been collapsed.
it actually is. MMO depends on the amount of players. Example: WoW, everywhere you go, billions of people are there.

warframe, while nothing like a traditional MMO, is very much a third-person shooter MMO and it is a grind. Serious grind..
Also, unlike many MMO's you can easily trade items you find for the game's premium currency Platinum. There is almost no difference between f2p and p2w players, if you're not afraid to trade.

First off I love this community which is why I'm asking here. You guys are great and between the lot of you it seems you know the internet like the back of your collective hand.
I'm looking for a new MMO but its going to have a few elements or I wont get hooked. First thing though it has to be Free to play. I like cryptic's game model of f2p (you can earn the pay currency pretty easily) but the specific mechanics of the currency aren't as important as the game not being Pay to Win. What I mean by this is there shouldn't be a plateau where you can't experience parts of the game without paying, I mean dungeons with gear scores too high to reach without paying or half your abilities don't unlock. I could care less if I can earn the currency easily enough or the majority of pay stuff is just convenience/cosmetic.
And the second thing is I loves me some crafting. I don't know why but a robust crafting system hooks me and keeps me in a game.
Thanks for the read
tl;dr want a new mmo, should be f2p and not suck, also has crafting.
