News: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/307546/Humble_Bundle_has_been_acquired_by_media_giant_IGN.php

Media giant IGN announced today that it has acquired Humble Bundle, the company best known for selling packs of indie games at pay-what-you-want prices. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This is potentially a big deal for game developers, since Humble has expanded beyond its bundling business to publish games, pay devs to make games for its subscription-based monthly game club, maintain a subscription-based online game trove, and operate an online game storefront.

However, a press release confirming the deal also noted that Humble will continue to operate independently in the wake of the acquisition, with no significant business or staffing changes. It will have some degree of support from IGN (which is itself owned by digital media giant J2 Global), specifically in terms of accelerating growth and raising more money for charity.

Humble grew out of a bundle of indie games sold to raise money for charity in 2010, and in the seven years since it has raised over $100 million for charity. In a conversation today with Gamasutra, Humble cofounder John Graham and IGN executive VP Mitch Galbraith reiterated that IGN does not intend to change the way Humble does business.

"If it's not broken, don't fix it," said Galbraith, who explained that IGN started looking to make a deal like this nearly a year ago. "The idea is just to feed them with the resources they need to keep doing what they're doing."

"We want to stick to the fundamentals in the short term. We don't want to disrupt anything we're doing right already," added Graham. "Because of the shared vision and overlap of our customer bases, there’s going to be a lot of opportunities."

If they're smart, they will try to replicate Fandango's acquisition of Rotten Tomatoes. That being said, expect changes to the DRM-free price modeling ($.10 minimum) and BTA price locking. These factors haven't really helped HB with its bottom line. There are fewer bundles with mystery additions these days, which means fewer reasons for HB to use BTA price locking.

It's only gonna hurry up HB death, as IGN won't keep company that generate only loses.

So they will most probably (like in Shadow of War bundle) use option "no matter your choice, 0,1$ will go on HB account to cover payment fees". Or smth,.

yeah, good point

fucking ign, I honestly can't understand why they sold themselves just for some quick money, they should know that everyone, or almost everyone hate ign.

but well, easy money, sadly that's our world

Well I hope it doesn't affect the quality of the bundles in a negative way.

I hope they can still offer DRM-free games in the future, or we'll have less places to buy DRM-free games. :(

You mean like the changes they've made after they opened their own store? I think many are looking at HiB through rose tinted glasses (similiar to steam really).

Already felt bad about my brand new yearly sub when the new early unlock was revealed an hour later (F2P bonuses+ ESO), now I feel kinda terrible. Just woke up to this news.

Hope they wait a year and let it run as it is before they start meddling, but I don't think it'll be that long :/

"Because of the shared vision and overlap of our customer bases, there’s going to be a lot of opportunities."

Overlap reviews to peddle your wares and opportunities to milk it for cash?Your subscription for your site IGN is terrible and now you will apply this knowledge to Humble?

Yes plenty of opportunities to fail and IGN seems to be good at that. How is IGN still a thing? They make PC Gamer look like the James Bond of Gaming sites.

The first order to improve the site is fill it with tons of ads and your reviews to sell games.

However, a press release confirming the deal also noted that Humble will continue to operate independently in the wake of the acquisition, with no significant business or staffing changes

Of course they did that way if they run it to the ground they can still crawl back to that cesspool they call IGN

It was good while it lasted but so long the Humble I know and loved now it will be tainted with the IGN Plague.

Bunch of bullshiters in this thread.

Before IGN's acquisition: Humble's bad, stupid unlocks, bad roster, high BTA, REPEATS REPEATS REPEATS.

After: Greedy bastard, RIP Humble, WTF IS THIS MADNESS?

Lol SG forum.

what you're implying is:

  • before: you couldn't complain because hb is the best shit on the pile, and there is no valid criticism ...
  • after: you can't complain because it can't get much worse and you already complained that hb is bad ...

get a grip boy ...

Noone says that the same group is complaining, though there are shared people. You literally can't even give away free stuff without someone complaining about it in some way, so this is not a surprise, sadly.

Mark my words: in a few months all bundles will be delivered as a single Steam key and cross region gifting will be impossible.

That right there is the problem and the fear. Give it a year or two of humbles continuous growth compared to igns stiffness and stupid ideas will pop up.

fuck no ... doubt they'll do anything anytime soon to tarnish the hb brand ... but in the long term yuck ... suddenly the
hb game links collection for all purposes i got, seems to be dwindling in value and possibly soon enough in safety

starting to despise this steam shit altogether ...

I was planning to pause my Humble Monthly because fuck that Elder Scrolls Online noise, but I was keeping it active until later on so that I could potentially grab some Trove games.

But I decided to at least make something of a point about it.

I cancelled instead of pausing, because month to month payments, it doesn't make ANY difference. But in the "why are you cancelling" box, I just typed IGN.

I like to imagine that that a few such actions will keep them in check, and hopefully they'll stay true to their HB ways, but the realist in me heavily doubts customers have any sway whatsoever.

I'll reserve judgement until I see how this works out. It might actually be ok.

If IGN wrecks it, then I'll have a reason to rant about them and corporate evil for the next year or so. lol
