Tilesets are for girls.

Real men save Khelavaster in ASCII.

Traditionalists might like staying in the stone age, but there's a reason this genre was dying out before the indie boom.

Yes - because it's too complex for today's kids.

I don't mind tilesets as such; the problem is that they take a LOT of space on the screen. Look at those screenshots: it's 12x8 instead of 80x25, and I personally used to play ADOM in 120x50.

Complexity is part of the reason, but only a part. There are complex games out there now that have huge followings.

You can play in ascii mode, makes everyone happy. I was raised on nethack (not to mention minimalist dungeon crawlers), but go ahead and call me a girl or whatever since I can't stand playing these games in ascii mode any longer.

Before 2012 or so, it certainly seemed like the community was shrinking to me.

Don't forget the *bands and Crawl!

I try to forget the *bands. I just can't get into any of them except Sil, which is a wonderful game.

I remember when Thomas Biskup said all he wanted for the game was a picture postcard from wherever you lived...never sent him one though.
