No, they don't. They cost more for not being shit. The crappy Android phones cost next to nothing. The good ones cost the same as the iPhone. Please don't spew ignorance like the mindless Apple-bashing sheep. The only time you overpay by going Apple is if you buy a desktop. If you buy anything else, you pay for higher build quality, and in the case of the iPhone, the fastest phone on the market with the best touch screen and HD resolution.

+1 im currently using iphone 4s but i previously had samsung galzxy s, xperia x10 , xperial play , lg optimus, iphone 4 , iphone 3 and nokia :P . i prefer apple cuz of the appstore and the overall feel. i like android too but before buying just compare it side by side with an iphone.

Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Are all great phones, just as good (even better) than Iphone 5. It comes to preference. I prefer One X over all other android/apple phones because of the screen size, and the way the phone works, it makes everything quick since it has 6 home screens you can customize to your liking.
It is pretty much a preference for ppl. But I do think that Apple does overcharge on there phones. the 32GB Iphone 5 in Canada is $300 with a 3 yr contract, $800 with no contract whereas HTC One X is $75 with 3 yr contract, $575 with no contract, etc etc

Bull poop. You are the one spewing ignorance, you are clearly an apple fanboy.

I used to have iPhones then I got Samsung galaxy s and since then didn't look back.

I recently got Sony Xperia U, it was around £120 and in my opinion is the best in its price category. Although it does not have a removable SD card, the memory is 2x4gb of which you can use around 4gb + 2gb. It is also supposed to get Android ICS upgrade soon.

HTC one X, Nokia lumia series, samsung galaxy s3, HTC Amaze, huawei ascend p1, samsung note

I sincerely suggest you an iPhone 4. Its price is now absolutely decent, its hardware still works very sleek and fast with iOS and you have lots of applications in the store, a big part of them free. Also, jailbreaking it there are some really cool tweaks...And it's easy!

yeah jail breaking is fun, done it with my iPod :)

Check out the HTC One X. I am using that right now and has been my favourite phone since. I love it, it pretty much has and does everything u need it to do, user friendly, great quick access tools and what not

I still would get an iPhone. Probably no iPhone 5, but 4 or 4S because they will be cheap and the accessories will be CHEAP. You can also do anything your iPod can do, plus what a phone can do. Then you can just sell your iPod. Now, instead of carrying an iPod and a phone, you have an iPhone. But it or not, Does not affect me.

Pretty much. Android has solid software with crappy hardware that doesn't hold up to Apple's. Even though it's cool to hate the iPhone, it's a solid device that you really can't go wrong with.

I dont know the prices in £ but, i have a Samsung Galaxy SII and i recommend it over every mobile phone (i havent tried the Galaxy SIII yet, but it has tons of useless things that you will never use).

Yeah, I would recommend the Galaxy Nexus.
I have the Nexus S, stock android and first devices to be updated are a plus but games won't run as well.

I currently own, and have been in possession of since July 2011, a Samsung Galaxy S 2 aka the I9100. It's running CM10 alongside Dorimanx's custom Kernel; Siyah-based. That, combined with a dpi of 175 and Google's brilliant APIs and overall BI and AOSP design delivers a superior experience in every way compared to any other available (or otherwise) alternative.
At the time I bought the I9100 it was the best phone on the market. Currently it's the I9300, followed by a few good competitors, mostly from LG.
OS-wise:
Android?
Rim?
iOS?
Android. Why? The most important reason would be because it's open source (albeit rated lower relative to other projects, like Eclipse). It's the open source part of it that allows developers to reach higher achievements with their foregoing maintenance and development of what the manufacturers never deliver - ongoing sw support for purchased devices' predecessors.
Android has drastically better customization abilities. Although in terms of stability it does have some issues. But they're hard at work fixing that. So I'm not concerned.
Also, a lot of high-end Android device is superior h/w wise to the Iphone.
So if you want to know which manufacturer to choose, go with either Samsung, LG, or Sony Ericsson. They all support open source and help developers with a lot of the stuff they need help with (although unfortunately, not everything. But better than dealing with Apple's 'nothing').
Also note that most if not all Android devices use standards. Like the micro-USB. Standards are good and important to follow. Everything Apple is everything proprietary. When you close yourself off from others you slow down progress. Think long-term.
Also a lot of Android devices have an expansion slot for a MicroSD card, whereas the iPhone lacks one.
S/W wise: Google Play, iTunes? Note that applications written for Android are pleasant to handle. Largely written with Java, a beautiful language with some stability issues. Easy to develop with it. Don't know Objective-C (never tried it), so not sure as to how easy it is to develop for iOS. Considering my dislike of Apple for its primitive products and zombie-like view of their prey, I'd say I'm biased. But not because I have a person issue with Apple, but because empirically speaking, it's the unwise choice when it comes to purchasing a smartphone (not necessarily other products - e.g. Mac, can't say the same for their prices).
Basically my I9100 is like my PC alternative. Pretty much anything I want to do on my PC I can do on my I9100 (common sense applied - please?). The Iphone? Feels like a primitive stick of brick compared to Android. Some, or perhaps even most of the things you can do on Android you could probably find a way to do on the Iphone. But it's such a pain in the ass to accomplish because Apple doesn't want you to mess around inside its little toys.
To further help you understand, here are some useful links:
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll gladly help. And I certainly won't ridicule you if you end up buying an Iphone. I just state the facts I know and how I feel as a result of what I know. It's up to you to conclude what the end goal meets in terms of your needs.
Edit: I should also note that my I9100 features a SAMOLED+ screen. Best. Screen. Tech. Ever. Every time I turn the screen on I can't help but adore the beauty before me.

Keep away from Sony Xperia, my experience with the x2 and play was just urk. Lg is pretty good and budget, the one I used was Optimus 2x. Samsung is fairly decent too. I am using the s2 and it's been great thus far. I did hear good things about HTC thou, that's was my 2nd choice.
E: I know how you feel, I got an ipod too so there's aint much point on me getting an iphone. Personally, I am looking at the note 2 for my next phone.

I do love my Play. It was a great product, with major design flaws but nonetheless a great phone.
