Going to build a gaming PC for my gf and I need help with it...

We are aiming at Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU, but at the moment we are going to get only the essential parts for it.
So no SSD or $400 GPUs... Only the motherboard, HDD, CPU etc.
Why? Because her laptop(ewww) is dying fast...

TL;DR?
I need core parts for medium to high end PC. So the PC must be compatible with some great CPUs.

Size would be full tower.

Looking for GA? Look here
I will also reward the most helpful answers with group invite.

I will check this thread in 9 hours...Sleep is for the weak...

Now seriously shove that AMD out of this thread!

I'm not going to buy cheap stuff for my gf.
Buying AMD for me is like buying fake diamonds for 75% from the real deal.

I had an AMD GPU in the past and there were nothing but problems. Sure it was cheap but it was still crap.
And I have read from forums that it's still that way. And processors? I have one right now and I want it out from my my computer.
It's really not meant for gaming... It's meant to heat up the house with extra cost....

EDIT. READ BEFORE POSTING

We are going for i5 4690K later and for now she's going to be stuck with G1840.
Case is still open as we need a case. It could be pink, red/black or anything really. She doesn't care that much about it.
Oh and a mobo+PSU and then we are good to go. We have a monitor, KB and mouse already.

THE CORE HAS BEEN ORDERED!

Thanks for your help! I have sent Invites to my GA group so don't be shocked(It has MTL in the name)It will be a little lighter on GAs than I was first planned but you might guess what's draining money...

For that price going with AMD is a better idea imo.

edit: I said that because thought your budget is $400, but seems not.

You need an i5, for example i5 4670K, or even without the K, or even a cheaper i5, you don't need i7s, 8Gb of RAM 1600Mhz or if a faster is at same price with Case Latency CL9, a good brand PSU and Motherboard, a GPU like GTX 960, a 1TB 7200rpm HDD, 20-30$ CPU cooler, a 30-50$ Case like from Cooler Master, I would say these are essential parts.

Right now i5 4690K is cheaper or same price as 4670K. So I would recommend that, there's no need to buy a CPU cooler since stock cooler is good enough unless he plans on overclocking.

Well cheapest would be Intel Celeron G1840 only like about $40 Amazon , but I wouldn't recommend for gaming. Cheapest i5 would be Intel Core i5-4430 about $180, but between that and 4690k it's about $40 difference.

i5-4440 probably, I think even this one is just enough, unless you want to overclock, which requires to pay more money for electricity and buying a CPU with K.

If you buy a 4690K you are supposed to overclock it (the "K" stand for overclockable")
If you won't overclock go for the 4690, is basically the same cpu, but "locked" (and cheaper)

There is not really a budget yet. We are aiming at some lower tier CPU and we will change it to better one later. Gpu vill most likely be Gtx 980 but it will also come later. Right now I just need the roots for it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure what your budget is but what I would first recommend is getting a good power supply unit. I would suggest EVGA SuperNOVA 650G1 comes with 10 year warranty, fully modular, and enough to power GTX 980. Motherboard is kind of hard to choose unless you know exactly what CPU you want since it's socket dependent.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I would recommend buying the higher-tier things from the start, instead of replacing them with better ones later. I mean, it will become much more expensive to change the CPU later on, since the price difference between some i3 and i5 isn't much, and the quad-core i5's are really, really good enough. (Unless by 'cheapest' you mean "Celeron").

And remember, if you don't plan multiple graphic cards, a 400-500W PSU should be more than enough. (I've got an i7 and a GTX260, and it consumes like 250W tops.)

Motherboard should be the cheapsest, that has all the features you want (like 4 ram slots).

RAM - more ram is usually 'better' than faster ram. 8gb should be the minimum.

HDD - seagate - 3TB for the best 'space-price ratio'.

If you don't mind paying 70% more for 10%-20% more performance, then go for the 980.

By the way, interesting to see how well this 970 problem worked out for NVIDIA. Even though it's not a huge deal in practice it apparently makes people willing to pay a lot more for the 980. I wonder if NVIDIA will learn the lesson from this and cripple all $300 cards in small ways in the future.

Get an AMD FX 8350 and an AMD R7 GPU and you'll have 80% of the processing power for less than half the price of a similarly ranged Intel+nVidia combo.
But even if you are adamant on the Intel CPU, get an AMD card. Way better price/performance ratios.
As for CPU, a mid-range Intel Core i5 should be the best option. For example a 3570, 3590, 4570, 4590…4670 or 4690 if you can afford it (4690 is probably the best choice overall).
If not aiming for a later overclocking with a better cooler, then go for a normal one (with no K at the end).

Or if you really want to go to excellent price, get an AMD APU (A series). I saw streamers use it to run Unreal Engine 3 games (Arkhams, Borderlands, and so on) running it at 720p@60fps, and it costs less than most Intel chips or nVidia cards, and it is a GPU+CPU in one set.

good choice dude^^

for undecided ppl out there, here some arguments against AMD CPU's/GPU's:

for the CPU's:
they're not only lacking in proccessing power, but also the ernergy-consumption is gigantic and they tend to heaten up pretty much from idling :D

for the GPU's:
they lack in terms of hardware-quality, don't have physX support and in my opinion a horriffic software^^

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You realize the lack of PhysX support is merely the result of nVidia locking it to their proprietary CUDA and forcing other vendors to build CUDA drivers and license PhysX to support it on their own hardware. That kind of shady strong-arm deals are one of the reason I refuse to buy any nVidia GPU. AMD has Havock which is just as good as PhysX and has the advantage of working with any GPU as they have the good sense to not punish the end user for going with a competitor's product.

There was a hacked PhysX driver available for a while from some guy who made it compatible with AMD chips but nVidia quickly killed it. And if nVidia didn't have such a shitty OpenCL driver (which, unlike CUDA, is the open standard) they could have used that for PhysX and everyone would have benefited from it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then prepare to dig deeper in your pocket though, since nVidia is a bit overpriced, even in mid-range. But in this case make sure that the GPU's name end with a x50Ti at least, or even better get some x60 or x70. Anything under is so weak it's just not worth it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not sure that will be that feasable, they use different architectures. Doing a software bridge would be either wonky or tax CPU, IMO.
Also… I wouldn't call a 980 mid-range or on a budget build, but if you can afford it this easily, then yes, get a 4690 or 4690K with it, and a 450+ Watt power supply, and at least 8 GB 1600+ MHz memory. But I was under the impression you are trying to build a rig in the 6-800 USD range. ^^

fits all the requirements, could add any video card(ie 960), as the 750 ti is the minimum card for gaming at 1080p medium-high settings. I put a full tower case, but a mid tower for $40-50 is a better fit IMHO. the i5 could be switched to a non-k version (4460?) and the cpu cooler removed, but this is a pretty well rounded pc.

here is a build for you http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jgGBYJ

Total: $720.96

It went a little overkill for PSU, in case you want to upgrade your GPU.

There's only one 8GB memory stick, you can add another one to have dual channel later.

If you don't plan to OC, i5-4690 with stock fan works totally fine and saves you some money.

For mouse and KB, Logitech Desktop MK120 Mouse and keyboard Combo is a good choice for the money. $14.99 on amazon.

Remove the Wireless Network Adapter if you don't use wifi.

this build has a Red/Black color scheme.

You may want to change that from 1x8GB RAM to 2x4GB for dual channel, the performance difference is measureable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree. But if you plan to upgrade in the future, I'd rather add another 8GB to setup a 2x8GB dual channel as I mentioned.

Otherwise, if there's no plan to upgrade ram, then 2x4GB is the way to go.

If you're running on a budget definitely go AMD. Much better bang for your buck, could save some good money. The 270X GPU can handle any game with flying colors and is affordable. (280 series is even better if you can afford it) You can get a 270X for $100 from XFX

a 6 core CPU is all anyone would ever need and you can get a FX-6300 (or better if you can afford it). 3.5 GHz base but overclock capability to 4.3 usually. One monster of a CPU in terms of oveclocking. But higher end FX CPUs can do great without overclocking if you can afford it.

1TB harddrive, say ASUS or Gigabyte motherboard and 8 gigs of RAM DDR3 1600. Could easily only cost $500 depending on where you get the parts. (Unless you go with something higher than what I listed.) This setup will be good for years to come without a doubt. It can get 60 fps on the most demanding games as it is.

I don't pick sides, I try something and if it works I suggest it to other people. My setup works and can be made much more affordable with a single GPU and I simply thought you might want to know in order to save some money and still give your GF a PC that can run every modern game with 60 fps without issue. You should have bought an FX 8350 instead. Less consumption, about the same performance.
Although I'm not exactly sure that 25-30 W difference is measurable in electric bill since it is calculated in kilowatthours. Even in Western Europe it is what, 20 Euros difference annually if you run it in server mode? (Although if you run a desktop CPU in server mode, you deserve to pay more.)

25-30w?
just fully stress out each CPU's limit, amd's keep getting ways beyond their stated 125w (200-250 are more real), since amd only get more performance through using up tons of power, the i7 stays at a max of around 100 (77w stated so just a little above it)

and since my pc is up and i'm working with it around 14-18 hours a day i'm saving around 10-15€/month what makes up the higher priced intels a lot cheaper after around 1-2 years if you calculate everything in^^

I usually wouldn't care when fanboys like you insult the brands you hate, but do you have to be so stuck up and pretentious with how you rage? Seriously. If you're buying a computer for a girl you have to be at least 18, stop acting like an uneducated teenager.

I've never been able to relate to the pure brand loyalty people some people adopt. From a psychological perspective, I get why they do it, but its just silly.

AMD products give you great value, although NVIDIA and Intel tend to give you greater performance with the increased cost. Personally, I usually go for an AMD setup, because I'm much more of a budget gamer, but I can understand people wanting a more powerful setup and are willing to pay for it.

On a side note, there's absolutely nothing wrong with buying man-made diamonds. In fact, synthetic diamonds are just as pretty (if not moreso), far cheaper, and far more ethical than mined diamonds.

Just to note, I have my self an FX-8350 + Radeon HD 7950, I scored significantly less points in 3DMark than ppl who had same GPU but with an i5-3570K, which is not cool, now another thing my friend had same CPU and GPU, then he bought a GTX 770 it made games run a lot better, and the point of this is that after he replaced his CPU to an i7-3770, he got like 30fps improvement as he says and also now his games run smoother, fps is more stable doesn't go down that much like it did with the AMD CPU.

My self, I can't complain about my Gaming PC, it runs really good, but next time I build a Gaming PC I will buy an i5 and an Nvidia GPU, because more stable fps with Intel, better drivers and less problems in game optimizations with Nvidia that some games seem to have more often with AMD, also I completely dislike the AMD Gaming Evolved Software powered by Raptor, I never liked Raptor and its just trash, even the recording software has issues like very bad color balance.

You'll still need a hdd with that and a case a 1 or 2 TB drive is very cheap and should be more than sufficient. Just go sata 3 and make sure the drive doesn't have terrible reviews and you'll be fine. As for the gpu, I purchased mine for $200, and I'm sure you could find it for the same.

Oh nothing's wrong with pink (especially in that hair! That looks fkn awesome) but it seems Mr MTLVMPR is kinda touchy at the moment...especially seeing as how he ripped someone's head off for suggesting he buy his missus a Mac...

I have little tolerance for trolls but pink case is a probability.

Why is a Mac not a good computer for a chick? Or are they just bad in general?

Most games aren't even available to Macs.

Fair enough...I get why they don't count as gaming computers then...

Aww, well thank you! <3
And yeah, I understand why he refuses to get one for the lady (they really are not optimal for gaming), but I do agree he may have went quite a bit overboard.
And I just googled for some pink cases.....fck new games, I want a new case! I wish I had seen these when I built this one before.. :(

Can't say I blame you! I buy everything I can in pink...or, well, black. They compliment nicely.

That was my first idea when I saw the title. Just make a regular build and use a pink case.

So what's your budget? About 3 fiddy?

Could get a "decent" AMD setup for that price but I ain't giving no AMD damned 3 fiddy! Not without a power supply that can power at least a small town! Even then you give them 3 fiddy they'll keep coming back!

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

you can do 8 i picked 16gb better to have more then not enough as more games i think in the future will need 8gb for best performance

Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX Full Tower Case

Keep things cool and looks pretty good while doing it

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

it might be a bit more then you need but remember power supplies over time lose rated power as it is used so i always get more so i feel safe that 5 years from now i will still have the power i need to run the rig, anything less then gold and your throwing money away to electric bills

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Just to make things quieter and maybe a bit of an over clock but not needed but i love mine just because it keeps it cooler and i barely hear it

I am not sure if you needed an OS though you might be able to use the key from the laptop it seemed to work for me since my laptop broke has been using it for like 6 months with no issues.

The hard drive can be changed depending on needs but still a good price and i would split into 1tb partitions and keep os on one and games and such on the other in case windows goes down you will not have a lot to worry about.

20 more bucks and intel will cover any over clocks again not needed but something to think about
http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/purchase-a-plan

though i think for the most part that intel should be fine as seeing how most games for medium-high gaming i have an AMD 6300 still and i can still run most games high to max even on Metro i can manage medium level.i have a 7950 so i think my cpu is more of the bottle neck

Love how the case looks but the PSU might be a litle overkill atm. (might upgrade later)
The case also seems to be over 100€ so I might choose another one.

i sometimes forget that not everyone is from where i am lol

and i was guessing on price factor but cool master does make some really good cases for air flow

Full tower cases good ones run around 100 bucks give or take

This is what i use HAF 912 http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-rc912kkn1

video of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv7mFfWhERY

They did have a plus version that had a better hard drive cage and looked better but for some reason it is not made anymore lol

i liked it because it fit my 7950 and my hyper 212 plus cooler and it has good air flow and can handle either one 120mm fan or 200mm fan 200mm

not the ugliest case still pretty good design and not cheap or flimsy it weighs around 25 pounds or so lol

EVGA 650 watt version for around 55 bucks
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g10650xr 650watt version

either way EVGA has one the better PSU with a fair price
